I have a couple of seriously nasty tricks planned depending on what my opponent does the key question is will he split KB - I dont think he needs to given the size of mini KB but he could

Also will he go for Pearl or go for Sydney or manila - I would guess Pearl but you never can tell of course he doesnt know if I bought fighter sqns for Australia or moved some west coast ones there.

If he hits Pearl I need to keep my Carriers in Eastern Pacific to protect West Coast my usual would be to rush Enterprise and Lexington to DEI to delay him but it really depends on what he does.

My early game picks were pretty weighted to making the DEI harder take better US DD's and CA, more Aircraft in pools etc etc

If he goes all out for Australia or just bypasses a lot of stuff and goes deep it could get quite nasty

OK been doing some planning

Malaya - Force Z will either move south on turn 1 to rendevous with some US Gearings to improve its AA Defence It has 4 Tribals for screen but I would like to thicken that screen a little once joined up I will split force Z into 2 TF's Repulse and POW leading 5 Modern DD's each - if KB comes to Singapore on turn 1 I will bug out if not I will wait and see what happens maybe moving 1 of the TF's to operate in the Philipines

My Dutch forces will concentrate in the Celebes and lower Borneo as usual awaiting opportunities to strike

The SOPAC fleet now centred on the Swiftsure class CL Adeilade will assemble somewhere in the Solomoms and await intel

Houston (now a Baltimore) Boise Marblehead and the other 4 Gearings will assemble somewhere in Southern PI until I spot mini KB

If any of the DD's from Manila survive they will join them as will the 3 DD's from HK if they survive

Off PH well that really depends on what my opponent does I have 6 SS, 2 CV TF's and a SCTF that I can move but I only get one movment phase on turn 1

I am not allowed to change air group orders so options

1. Sub screen to north east in normal KB strike territory probably going to do that 1 sub every couple of hexes
2. Ent and Lex either go North to try and interfere with Midway Ops, head towards Wake for same, head towards Tarawa for same, join up SW of Pearl and await developments - all are on the table have not decided which way to go
3. SCTF centred on Indianapolis probably loiter SW of Pearl until I know what he is up to no point in going to too close to PH until I know whats happening as long as I can sprint into the port or out of it is all that matters

Thats really about it on turn 1 not a lot else I can do decisions will be made in next 48 hours whenever I get the turn

On 2. I suspect my opponent is a good player and the chances are he will try to maximise PH strike if he goes for PH and not Manila - (I can see good reasons not to go to PH in this scenario - the BB's he might sink a couple but the rest normally survive - more points to be had tempting me to bring them out of Pearl where he can sink them outright) and he doesnt know I didnt buy working allied torpedoes so Manila becomes a much bigger threat especially as he could be facing a very modern and effective allied fleet in the DEI (he isnt I only took about 20 modern DD's and 2 Cruisers) but he doesnt know that !!!)

So I could maybe go hunting his fleet oilers on turn 1 Lexington is going to go N towards Midway to bushwack any turn 2 invasion of Midway or Wake (unless he has taken the option to buy a couple more magic move TF's) I think Lady Lex will be in good position to hit any invasion and dissappear before KB can catch up.

Now Big E and her TF I will move just north of FFS its unlikely he has any of his Sqns on naval attack and he will be focussed on PH - its a calculated risk (I am not allowed to change orders on my Sqns) so I am stuck with one DB sqn on 50% search

On turn 2 Lex cn move towards Wake and Big E can srpint North to cover Midway with a bit of luck I can bag a couple of AO's and a few invasion transports

Or if he goes all out for Manila so be it nothing happens

Too much time to think on this one its been a week waiting for turn 1 getting antsy now

Andy, he would have to know if you chose working torpedoes since he would have to set the switch when he started the game.

I hadn't really thought things through. If the Allies choose working torpedoes then all the USN torps can be changed in the data base quickly, the same with no withdrawals, using witpaeload all withdrawals can be set to 0 in just a few key strokes. And the Japanese player would not have to be notified.

Aye there are a few tricks and strategies I wont use in a game be interesting to see if my opponent will !!

I wont use training sqns to avoid CAP
I wont bombard at max range so places like Truk are safe if I go there I will pay the piper unless its like 6" guns
I wont try to run a fortress Palembang - its just too cheesy for me (not that I will be given the choice !!)

My opponent has been working on his turn 1 for a week+ so either he has been busy or its going to be a work or art.

Now if its a work of Art that gives me some info - he may be min/maxing either his strikes on Pearl/Manila/Brisbane or Singapore (or any 2 of these)

If he is I may be able to take some risks and get some early strikes in on turn 1 - more to follow

I have too much time on my hands to think about this while I wait on a turn - the more I think the more creative I get for my turn 1 and turn 2 actions - I would kill for a couple of magic move TF's to screw with his opening !!!

He could have a 450+ strike on Pearl and a 250+ strike on another base on turn 1 it is possible but that would be a lot of points - based on questions he asked me he definitly resized KB Sqns so the 450+ KB and a load of Akagi's are almost certain

It really depends what he has done with mini KB if he has reized all the air groups and filled them up 50% of my plans are suicide - if he hasnt I could cause mayhem in the DEI for a week or two

Of course if he has 6 Yamato's covering his invasions POW and Repulse even with support from Gearings and Tribals are in trouble. Hindsight is a wonderfull thing but I should have converted Repulse into a Vanguard class and not bothered with one of the R class.

Without knowing his pointpicks I am not sure...

He did say he had a lump coming in 43 so like me a lot of his points have been spent mid war so convert all the KB's to Akagi's yes I suspect he has done that and filled them up with extra aircraft, convert all his CS and CVL's to Ryujo class - yup he will have done that

What else could he have done to the opening

Convert Kongo's to Yamato Class ??
Add a load of Akitsukis converting less efficient types yes
Maybe convert some small tankers into the massive ones
maybe convert the crap training CL's to better classes or even into Mogami class CA's

All of the above is possible but he also let slip that he loves CS carriers so I suspect a few of those have been converted as well

I dont know caution or aggression in my turn 1 response

Going to sleep on it as i dont expect the turn today my gut says go all out aggression as he will expect me to Sir Robin but I could be wrong and get my fleet sunk on turn 1 !!!

Where could he go where would hurt me the most

If he wants India a Mersing Gambit
If he wants Australia - Rabaul and New Cal on turn 1 - maybe Fiji as well
PH a day 2 or 3 landing in hawaii
NZ he doesnt need to do anything weird in his opening
West Coast USA e.g. Portland can he land on the West Coast on turn 1 and if he does well thats a bit crap because the game will be over fast when he fails ??
Blitkrieg PI with massive force ?
Soviet Union - unlikely
Maybe a fast grab at Palembang or maybe Timor or North Borneo

Some of these I can cover off but not all need to think about what I cover.

Definitely need to cover Mersing the rest I will make the call when I eventually get the turn

Andy

And we are finally off not sure what to say beyond 2 weeks of wait while he planned this turn and it was the single nastiest turn 1 I have ever seen

I think I lost 5 BB's on turn 1

Havent seen my turn yet so not sure

Utter disaster

I sent Big E toward hawaii and I was breakign HR on turn 1 as I was moving towards where I thought his Carriers were and we had a no hunting carrier on turn 1 rule (that I forgot applied to both me and him)

So I redid my turn sent them south west of Pearl only to be told I had initiated yet another carrier battle

So I redid it a 3rd time with turning my air groups off not sure what he was up to in the north but anyway I will find out

As you can see he has landed in Lahaina and my TF that went to Mersing POW/ 2 CL's and a DD found nothing

He hit Rangoon, Hong Kong, Manila, Singapore and utterly crucified Pearl.

I now understand why folks have the house rule limiting port attacks on turn 1 - its a bit naff given Singapore and HK were not surprised and neither was Manila although I do think the Air Force was caught on the ground in PI

Anyway read it an weep he is clearly going for HI now what I dont get is if he is going to HI why land in PI ??

Landing in the PI given the limited LCU's he will have is only really usefull as a deception for a turn 3 or 4 landing in Hawaii - he landed in Hawaii on turn 1 so why take the risk of landing in PI and going for Rabaul at same time all of that is pretty risky

Imade him pay a little at Kuantan but it was second string that found them
I then

For the Allied fan bois, as the saying goes: "Read it and weep!"

That was one heck of a first turn for the Japanese. Yo definitely have your work cut out for you. I guess that he wanted more bombs on target which is why the Vals were at extended range.

OK Turn 2 his forces are split with KB to SE and BB's to North

I think he has his Oilers with KB to South if so he cannnot really sprint and I have a lot of Subs sortieing this turn

He also has to cover the landings at lahaina (or bug out)

So I have ordered Lex to move at Flank Speed to a position NW of Pearl when I want to join up with Enterprise allwing me to send one of the Carrier Groups Escorts to bolster the defence of Pearl

All non essential Sqns have been disbanded to preserve supply for the siege to come

In Pearl in addition to 5 sunk BB's 3 are at 80+ float and all my cruisers bar Mineapolis and the en route Indianapolis TF are out of commission but my 4 Gearing Class DD's are intact

The AF is out of commission for anything but CAP missions this turn but will be back up and running tomorrow.

So the plan is to move Both Carrier TF's NW of Pearl and eventually link with the on rushing Saratoga and all the DD's and Subs being sent this way from West Coast

Operational Subs from manila are also heading to Pearl

I have created 5 x DD 1 DMS 1 DM 2 PT Boat and 1 CA led SCTF's and 3 x ASW TF's if they can float they can fight also all support and non combat ships are fleeing this turn to West Coast some should escape

4 of my DD's are led by a Gearing with Radar and the best Captains I have and I am going in all directions around pearl on Max react.

My Catalina have been put on Naval Strike as they are the only ones that will fly today and my Seagulls are on a mix of night naval search

I think he has made a tactical error in launching his Pearl attack from the SE it has split his forces and with my carriers in the area he cannot really split KB (but he should) as he needs to be North of Pearl to cover the battlewagons and SE to cover what I think are his oilers but I doubt he has the screening elements to protect KB until he links up with the BB's

I am going to try and exploit that this turn

I have used waypoints to try and route Big E round the BB's I dont want to get into a fight with them because halsey may not run fast enough if he does so waypoints at flank speed with all the cruiser Seagulls set to night search I really want to avoid his BB's if I can

he loss of the AKE's has got to hurt i dont get KB going SE of Pearl on turn 1 unless i roll over and go turtle it leaves him very exposed and where are all the IJN CVL's I assume he upgraded them

I get landing in PI if you are going to land in hawaii on turn 3 or 4 as a diversion but again not sure I get it if you are doing a turn 1 landing in Hawaii surely better to bypass and hit Malaya in strength and I dont see the point in diverting resources to Rabaul on turn 1 its not like I am going to fight for it later its too easy to cut off.

Turn 1 was a masterpiece in set piece destruction but unless I roll over and go full turtle I think I can cause him some real issues

I will probably move Lexington and Enterprise North for the next few days he has to have follow on Invasion TF's en route and KB is miles out of position he will have to move KB north to protect his follow on invasion TF's and probably pull his heavies back to Truk to rearm and in that window I will repair a few damaged DD's and bring out 20 odd from West Coast and use Saratoga to ferry in air sqns

I can make him pull away from Hawaii I think by threatening follow on slow invasion TF's

I may not be able to hold PH but I can make it a long and bloody fight

Actually the best thing he could do is give up he has destroyed the US Pacfic Fleet at low cost none of his BB's are sunk his CAG's are intact and my fleet is devastated but if he stays 70% of his naval combat power is going to be tied down by the battle of PH when he needs them in DEI - this wont be fast now that much I think turn 2 has achieved

So I guess the question is how do I give him hope that hawaii can still be taken

I will have Indomitable and Hermes with 120 Carrier Aircraft between them supporting DEI defence plus 3 Vanguard Class BB's in not too distant future thats a lot of firepower to come and his big nasty CA's and Kongos will do fine against most opponents but Vanguards and POW/Repulse if united will be a formidable battle fleet and I should have enough Martlets on Indomitable and Hermes to cover them from Betties

So he will need KB in DEI and I think if he persists with Hawaii now he might still be able to take it but its going to be slow

Nagato - Level 7, level 6 with 760NS

Yamato - level 9, level 8 + 88NS, level 7 + 188NS

I know how many AKEs he has, but I am not saying.

The he is toast those 6 BB's must be out of ammo which means heading back to Truk

KB has a few Kongos and CA's but not enough to get through what I have left at Pearl and even if he does to what end cannot bombard with Kongos not PH not and be decisive

All he has is KB his pilots and aircraft are still intact but in a month I will have 4 US CV's in theatre and Warspite and Pennsylvania to lead TF's at Pearl

I lost every battle yesterday except the last one and it cost me a couple of CA's and a load of DD's so I am hurting no question BUT he cannot suppress PH with Carrier Air in the long term and even when he takes Lahaina I can close it with Bombardment TF's

If he has more AKE's close to hand maybe he can keep going but I think he has to give up take the win of his devastating turn 1 and turn around and go walk over the DEI

It all comes down to the decision to send KB SE of Pearl

I dont get it ?? Whats the upside of that position it leaves his Northern forces exposed because KB's screen is not that strong and he cannot risk going North close to PH because of the DD TF's he knows are coming unless he waypoint sprints but if he does that he leaves his AO's exposed because I assume they are south west in the same hex as KB

2 must protect TF's the AKE's North of Pearl and the AO's south of Pearl and he cannot be in 2 places at the same time so he cannot afford to sprint with KB whilst my Carriers are active

I pulled the same move v another opponent who kept KB NW of Pearl and he chased down and killed lady Lex on turn 3 because he kept KB between the AO's and AKE's and my carriers

Now to be fair had that Sub sank Enterprise I might be saying different things now so I had a fair amount of luck yesterday

Very nicely done Andy. I concur you have very likely eliminated his rearmament options here which should be critical for the defense of Hawaii.

My guess is that the KB sailed southeast in the belief that your ships will attempt to flee from Pearl in that direction.

Ah ok the problem is he has now effectively tied my Carriers to the defence of Pearl

I think if I was him I would take the forces at Pearl now and sweep through Centpac and Sopac

Any follow on forces on slow TFs divert to PI and DEI and use the force already at Pearl to take Christmas Island Fiji New Cal and NZ

I have to honour the threat at Pearl and reinforce and ok he eventually loses the Div he has landed at Lahaina but it will be a pain for me to get rid of it and assuming he took extra PPs he can replace it in the line pretty quickly

Basically I would give up on Pearl unless he has more AKEs en route maybe leave 3 Carriers in Hawaiian waters to keep me honest and use the rest of KB to crucify SOPACnand Centpac

Between the Subs maybe a zero sqn on Lahaina to keep my fighters suppressed he doesn’t need much to tie me down in Hawaii freeing him up everywhere else

So Day 2 is at least 2 CA's, 4 DD's sunk

3 more heavily damaged and 6 on fire

1 of the Gearings sunk and 1 Heavily damaged (I lied and told Hellsenstat 3 were sunk - Op sec !!!!)

At pearl I dont think I did major damage to any of his units apart from the CS, and 4 AKE's

I was really excited by this game and still am but we have managed 4 turns in 30 days the pace is killing me I am a player who thinks 1 turn a day is slow pace this is pure murder ;)

Its so hard (and i am not always succeeding) to avoid bugging my opponent daily - I have never had a game this slow before I am normally sitting at my PC hitting the refresh button a lot.

My other 2 games are steady 5 turns a week games so thats something.

I know of old that 3 games at one time is my limit but thats when all 3 are at decent pace this slow pace really really bugs me - I am trying not to let my opponent know how much because that wouldnt be fair but I hate it !! :) :)

I never post on the forum unless all my turns are clear and I try to never keep my opponents waiting on a turn so I am like an addict not getting his fix at present :) :)

Don't I know the feeling

I think my absolute limit is two games, I don't know how you can do three, especially all of them as allies!

How do you think your modern radar equipped Gearing's and Tribal's preformed? I have been wondering if the more heavily armored Fletcher's might be better with the Asiatic Fleet since they may be more survivable.
