Shift-X is supposed to end AI vs AI play, but it has never worked for me.

Yes, I think that got disabled quite some time ago. Not sure if we can resurrect it. We may have to remove from the hotkey list.

Is there some other way to stop the AI play? Currently I have to force close the game, and then load an automatic save and disabled AI.

I believe it's still working. You just have to repeat endless time to catch a phase where the AI is not completely hogging the program and permits keyboard inputs
