Certain ground-based radar systems such as the MPQ-53/65 and the 9S19 have only a limited arc. This creates a problem when I try to put together air defense networks in the editor. If I group Patriot battalions together then as soon as the scenario starts they will rotate to the default orientation rather than search the area they are supposed to. I could modify the Patriots to have all-around radar but that would be unrealistic. I could leave each Patriot alone but then the map gets really cluttered.

Is there some elegant workaround that I'm missing?

Elegant, no...

I tried manually setting each Patriot in the group to have a speed of zero, but that doesn't work. Once you start the sim running they all turn in place to the wrong orientation.

However, if you set their speed to zero, and then go into the formation editor, you can assign each of them a new station point. They can't move onto the station, since you have given them a speed of zero, but they will turn to point at their station once the sim starts running. You can control the orientation of units in the group that way.

Alternatively, don't group the Patriots, although that may leave you with a lot of clutter if you have many units.

Thanks for the tip.

Don't group them, groups will always match the heading of the group lead. Unless you have some insane amount of units a little map clutter never hurt anyone.

I usually just select Hold Position (Ctrl-L or from the group menu drop down) once I've created a group or if I add a new SAM to a group it seems to be working so far and stops them wandering about if the group lead is changed (sometimes adding a new unit to a group changes who the leader is and the formation tries to change to rotate around the new leader).

EDIT: Also worth a try although I've not tried this yet but adding a Building (Small with Observer) as group lead may help as its fixed and does not rotate. (Be mindful to check its still group lead if you add additional units to the group).
