This is again a dual question as I was facing it with the road to Leningrad and the road to Messina. (dual meaning applies to WITW and WITE2)

The defender has decent units (maybe some fort level), decent command, decent terrain, defender's natural advantage, and reserves 6 hexes deep.

Yes, I can fly AD's very narrowly either interdict or unit, and GS, have SUs available, and my own reserve units, and DB attack. Still it can be hard and frustrating breaking a choke point. I have tried the tricks I know. Sometimes repeated hammering does help, other times it replicates the stupidity of The Somme.

I don't know that I have enough MP to DB ATK and rotate stacks to try to put up a more sustained pounding. Going around is so circuitous that it is hard to see an advantage given the ticking clock.

Also, I don't see a way to create an isolation situation either.

Expertise?

Thanks.

A 6 hex deep defence is going to require a lot of supply. Maybe not applicable to all situations but as Axis I generally look for supply choke points and bomb supply depots and interdict railways up to the range of escorts, including 2 engine FB's. Seems to help but I'm not sure what's going on under the hood.

I would have to see both situations in front of me. Do you have snapshots?

Attacking into strength is not normally the answer but it can be done. I will give you my 2 cents on the snapshots but by all means it is not "expertise".

At the moment I have no screenshots. But if I grabbed some it would just be some map hexes. Even the actual situation, without turning FOW off, it might be difficult to call it.

I can post the HEXes if you are still interest?

Thanks.

Terrain is situational, units are paramount.

The first shot (Sicily in WitW) is best dealt with by a left hook around the volcano and threaten to isolate the defenders.

The second shot (the Luga River line in WitE2) can be threatened by a right hook around Lake Ilmen, a left hook to the West of Luga, or an even further left hook along the Baltic coast to the northwest of this line. Or you could use air support and a series of Deliberate attacks by infantry in the Light Woods/Novgorod hexes followed up by panzer forces.

Thanks I came up with something very out of the box.

Form 4 divisions of armor out SUs and one on the map. Command to be given to Patton. He will be going to Palermo.

Give all Patton's infantry and all other infantry to Montgomery directly. He swarm Messina.

Once the ports are in Sicily, use the landing HQs to assist with coast bombardment.

AF mainly will mainly do REC, AS, GA, and GS. The later just leading the two fights.

How can I isolate the defenders. The Strait of Messina is controlled by the Germans. Doesn't that allow them to trace a path to supply?

Thanks.

I remember players who used AMPH HQ to isolate Messina. Take a look at some of the WITW AARs.

You threaten to isolate them by swinging around to the north and getting between them and Messina. It is almost impossible to isolate Messina unless you invade Italy's toe and cut it off that way.
