Until today, I had never heard of the Saito Cruise; a ceremonial visit of USS Astoria to Yokohama, Japan in May of 1939 bearing the remains of the late Japanese Ambassador to the US. Astoria, captained by Richmond Turner (a full Admiral later in WW2 with distinguished career)

Interesting photos attached; I particularly like the "Sushi" stand at the sake party! I wonder what the crew thought of Sushi in 1939.

Anyway, am I the only one who hadn't heard of this?

Really cool find. Yet 3 months later the US notifies the end of the 1911 commercial treaty with Japan.

Neither did I.

Always nice to see such events where different cultures meet and both parties can just enjoy themselves, without an agenda.
At least the sailors and normal Japanese people that is.

I wonder how the crew of the Astoria felt after the War broke out...

Interesting that the Astoria's salute on arrival at Yokohama was returned by the Kiso, which was a sister-ship to the Tama that fourteen years earlier had made a similar voyage to the US carrying the remains of Edgar Bancroft, the then US Ambassador to Japan who had died while in office.

I know this thread is a little old but I had to post about the Astoria. My father was on the Astoria during the cruise and I've got some of the items the Japanese gave to the sailors. Including a pass to a high quality bordello!

This is a family site. I do not think that pictures of his father being taken care of by a employee of a bordello would be appreciated by the staff.
