Hi Zeckke. Yes, I do keep a close watch on my engine pools (along with all the other pools too). The "engine assist" for R&D is amazing. I use it as much as possible.

Really enjoying your return Mike. I still have yet to get the game running on my pc, but really enjoy the AARs, maybe one day I will figure out how to get this game going and have the time once my kids are grown up to start a game! Funny that as a kiwi, who immigrated to the US and served as an officer in the US Army, I'm something of a JFB... Hope to see many Banzai moments ahead and please keep the posts coming!

Isn't it weird how that works? I'm 3rd generation Italian American and I'm a retired US Army officer. My Dad served in the US Army in the ETO during WWII and I had 2 uncles serve in the US Navy in the PTO in WWII. I also had members of my family serve in the Italian Army in WWII. Finally, I had a grandfather serve in the Italian Army in WWI. Yeah, it is weird how our interests often are different than what they "should" be.

14 Dec 41

Sub War

The I-157 drew first blood putting a torpedo into TK Iris south of Kendari. She’s only a little tanker, but every one helps at the beginning of the war. I heard sinking sounds immediately after the attack.

The Dutch quickly retaliated. KX put a torpedo into Chokai’s tough old hide. Her damage isn’t bad at 19-22(16)-1-0. She’s headed to the barn for repairs.

Not to be out done, the S-36 put a torpedo into the big Yusen-N Keisyo Maru. She was part of the 56 Division TF. She unfortunately went down later in the day.

5 Fleet

The Adak invasion force is 2 days out. I see no US activity other than a couple of small craft (YP or AM) at Dutch Harbor. The DDs escorting the invasion TF may be detached to check out Dutch Harbor should the invasion go smoothly.

4 Fleet

Another shock attack at Guam was unsuccessful. The I/33 regiment isn’t taking any losses, but they are getting disrupted. I’m going to rest them and send an SNLF company to show them how to do it. I’m not really in any hurry here, but this is getting ridiculous. I thought these guys were good?!

Wake Island finally fell. I’m sending a little AS and some engineers to build forts.

SE Fleet

Kavieng was liberated pushing the Aussie rabble out. Some AS and engineers are on their way.

The Shortlands Island assault force (II/66 Naval Guard and an AS unit) escorted by 4 Aobas will land tomorrow. They are unspotted.

Rabaul’s invasion force (144 Regiment and 15 Base Force) will land in 3 days. They are being escorted by Mutsu and Yamashiro.

Kavieng invasion force will land a day or two after Rabaul’s invasion.

Finschafen and Buna have small invasion forces leaving Babeldaob.

Port Moresby’s invasion force (4 Division) is a week out.

Finally, KB is about 6 days out from scouring the area of any shipping foolish enough to attempt to disrupt our liberation forces.

The 23 Air Flotilla is allocated to this AO. Their Betties are resting at Truk. Zeros will arrive tomorrow and some Babs will arrive the day after.

5 Air Division is also allocated, but won’t leave Luzon AO until they’re no longer needed there. (That means the fighters will leave when the US planes are gone one way or another but most of the bombers will stay until Bataan falls.)

SRA

Luzon: Zeros swept Bataan today in another attempt to deplete the US fighters in Luzon. It was a bit painful. Seven enemy fighters were destroyed for a loss of 4 Zeros. I still see 24 Allied fighters between Manila and Clark Field. When will they finally be destroyed?

The Allied frontline is shrinking. Lucena flipped to Japanese control, Naga was liberated and Batangas will be taken tomorrow. That will complete the liberation of the southern peninsula. The bases still controlled by the Americans is now Manila (5 units), Clark Field (11 units with some moving toward Bataan) and Bataan (19 units). Iba is till US controlled, but there are no enemy units there so it may flip before I land a unit there to take it. There are still 4 US controlled bases in the north, but they are cut off and will soon be taken by the Japanese.

Mindanao: Two DDs, attempting to hunt down Allied shipping, instead found 6 US PT boats, sinking 3 of them.

The Claudes swept Cagayan’s airfield again hitting no planes. The bombers have been withdrawn. The two tank regiments will reach Cagayan in a couple of days then attack the rabble there.

The Dutch Air Force is beginning to come into play. SW of Mindanao, 4 139WH-3s went after a small surface force but were intercepted by 4 Zeros and a Claude from the SRA Carrier Group (Kaga and Ryujo, soon to be increased by Zuiho and Hosho). Three bombers were shot down and the remaining one fled.

Malaya: There were Nells still on night airfield attack of Singapore. They’ve been pretty ineffective, so I stopped it for the future. Anyway, it was just an interim attack until I could neutralize the Buffalos and start day bombing with 3 Air Division, which began today.

Sweeps were made against Georgetown and Singapore to clean up the last few remaining enemy fighters. Only one Buffalo rose over Georgetown and was damaged by the sweeping Nates. Seven rose over Singapore. Two were shot down and the remaining were damaged. I see no fighters at either base, but I will continue to sweep until no Buffalos rise.

Singapore was hit in daylight by 63 Sallies, all going after the airfield, which was targeted for two reasons. First, I want to destroy/damage planes on the ground. Second, I want lasting airfield damage so no more forts can be built. The attack was successful on both counts, costing 2 Sallies to flak. The current airfield damage is 28 and a Buffalo, Hudson, Blenheim and S.19 were destroyed on the ground with an additional 3 Buffalos damaged. I’ll work on the airfield some more tomorrow.

I see no fighters at either base, and 5 bombers at Georgetown and 2 dozen bombers and a dozen auxiliary aircraft at Singapore. I expect Mike to withdraw whatever he can tomorrow. I hope he doesn’t so I can kill more.

On the ground, a Naval Guard reached Malacca and will take it tomorrow. I am on going to drop paratroops Temuloh in two days. That will clear the rail line to Johore Bahru. The only thing left will be to clear the rabble that fled from Kota Bharu (8 Indian Brigade and FMSV Brigade), which should happen in a few days. Then IG Division will be able to rail all the way to Johore Bahru instead of marching. I’m bombing those units daily, which is damaging a lot of the squads.

At Singkawang, a few Hudson attacks (15 planes total) out of Singapore went after a supply TF losing 3 to Zeros and one to flak. The few who stuck it out missed.

Burma

Nothing yet. The AVG is still at Rangoon.

China

I sent a force out of Ichang into the clear hex to the SW and trashed the Chinese corps there pushing it down the road.

Two Japanese divisions trashed 2 Chinese corps just west of Changsha. They fled to Changsha.

My early goals in China are to trash anything I can without destroying them while I maneuver in an attempt to surround as many Chinese as I can.

Other Stuff

I shut off 200 merchant shipyards. There are currently 1,916 points in the pool and it increased by over 200 today. Not sure what I’ll accelerate. I’ll look at that tomorrow.

The CVE Shinyo is accelerated and I may accelerate another one. Maybe Unyo? She would come late March, early April 1942. *Shrug*

Here's what I'm doing in Phase II. A few notes here:

Bataan: This is reinforcing artillery from Hong Kong. The combat forces are 16 Division and 65 Brigade along with some other artillery units.

Singapore: This is everything.

Edit: Just noticed that I was missing 4 & 15 Independent Engineer Regiments.

Reserves: 21 Division will land at Java unless someplace else runs into a snag. The SNLF units will most likely be added to the units taking the multitude of small bases throughout the SRA.

Order:

Land at Merak to enable the Oosthaven force to pass through. Concurrently or immediately after, Kaldjati invasion will happen to place land based air in the center of Java-Sumatra. The landings at the oil fields will not happen until the concern about enemy bombing is reduced. (That oil ain't going nowhere!)

Zamboanga will happen soon. That's the only supply source on Mindanao.

Almost sounds like me!

My great grandparents came to the US in the 1890's; my grandfather, Romeo, was born in NY. I'm a retired US Army officer (Corps of Engineers, just passed 30 years, so no more SBP payments). My Dad served in the 69 Div (artillery) in Europe in WWII. Two uncles served in Korea, one in the Signal Corps and one on a carrier. As far as I know none of my relatives served in the Italian Army, but those that didn't come to the States certainly could have.

A friend of the family has traced our line back to MarcAntonio, born in 1701, in Pacentro, Italy.

I love hearing this stuff, especially the units. It brings the units to life when you see them in a game.

Lol. I built a new computer, so everything was uninstalled in a sense. I've been very heavily into Eve Online the last few years - very different than this, but fun nonetheless.

I know you're aware of this, but I just wanted to throw in a reminder. If you're intending to convert your CS's to CVL's remember the first two must be done in Tokyo and it must have a repair yard of 50.

15 Dec 41

Sub War

Nothing today except a lot of misses on both sides (subs and ASW).

5 Fleet

The Adak invasion force will arrive there tomorrow.

The 3 battalions of 90 Regiment will begin loading at Rashin, Korea (literally on the border of the Soviet Union). They will probably go to Adak, Unmak Island and Dutch Harbor.

4 Fleet

Nothing much going on here. The I/33 Regiment will get a small reinforcement (2 Independent SNLF Company) to assist in taking Guam. The slackers…

SE Fleet

An amphibious assault of Shortlands Island happened today. I’m sure it was a surprise to Mike. They’ll take it tomorrow.

The two Japanese AMC that begin the war in the far SE Pacific were moving to raid Suva, but were still a few hexes SE and were smacked by some Vindicators, heavily damaging both. They probably won’t make it back to port, but at least I got some valuable intel from the mishap. Those Vindicators most likely were those on board the Lexington, which tells me that she probably is down there somewhere (and maybe Enterprise too). That could be a nice encounter with KB.

The Rabaul invasion force is 2 days out, assisted by 2 BBs. The Gasmata invasion force is also 2 days out, but will wait until the BBs are free to escort them. It all depends on the enemy response at Rabaul.

The 4 Division is 2 days out from Truk. They are the Pt. Moresby invasion force.

Finally, KB will arrive at Truk tomorrow. They’ll layover just long enough to refuel, rearm and add a few planes. Then they head south to stir up trouble. They are currently undetected.

SRA

An xAKL (probably a laggard) was sunk by surface forces about 6 hexes W of Peleliu. That may be the last of the thundering herd.

Philippines: Seven enemy fighters were shot down at a cost of 2 Zeros. I still see 5 enemy fighters over Manila/Clark. Another sweep goes in tomorrow.

Mindanao: Three B-17s hit the 146 Regiment at Butuan (next to Cagayan). Not sure where they came from (somewhere to the west) but they used a reduced bomb load. That means they could be anywhere. Some Nells bombed Cagayan’s airfield destroying a Seagull.

The two tank regiments should arrive at Cagayan tomorrow and will attack the day after.

Malaya: The weather was poor, so no planes flew in the region. I see 2 fighters at Georgetown and 1 at Singapore. I’ll continue to sweep both places and 80 Sallies are scheduled to hit Singapore’s airfield again tomorrow.

The 91 Naval Guard captured Malacca, ousting the 1 Hyderabad battalion. Unfortunately, they retreated up the eastern rail line, the one I want to clear. The Naval Guards will chase them to either destroy them or push them toward Kuala Lumpur.

The 124 Regiment is heading south down the rail line from Kota Bharu to destroy the 8 Indian and FSMV Brigades. They’re both in bad shape and are being bombed from about 120 sorties a day.

I am dropping paratroopers on Temuloh tomorrow. Taking that base along with clearing the two brigades and battalion mentioned above will allow me to rail IG division to Jahore Bahru. 33 Division will land at Mersing in 2 days and take another couple to march to Jahore Bahru. Then, the Singapore invasion force will move into Singapore. I listed the force earlier, but it consists of 25 HQ, IG, 5, 18 & 33 Divisions, two tank regiments, 6 artillery units and a couple of independent engineer regiments.

Burma

I now see 95(!) fighters at Rangoon. After liberating Singapore, I plan on sending a couple of bombardment forces there to turn those fighters into scrap.

There are a number of small TFs at Rangoon (1 ship, I think). I think it’s a CAP trap to try and kill off some of my Nells/Betties. I’m not falling for it.

China

I’ve been collecting DMS (13 of ‘em) to clear out the mines at Hong Kong when that base was liberated. They got there yesterday and cleared out all of them, some 350 or so. They’re headed toward Singapore so they can do the same thing when Singapore is liberated.

Two tank regiments trashed the defending Chinese Corps a hex NW of Paotow pushing them to the west. They’ll chase with the goal of eventually reaching Lanchow. A couple of brigades are enroute up there to help them out if needed.

Other Stuff

By shutting off the Yamato temporarily, I’ve been able to accelerate all 6 Unryus and half a dozen DDs too. I plan on turning on Yamato when she reaches the same date as Musashi (Dec 42). This is new for me. I’ve always built Yamato right out of the gate.

My air R&D is progressing as nice as can be expected at this date in the war. A Sam factory has actually repaired 1 of 30.

I think delaying Yamato until Dec 1942 is the right move for Japan; I did that last game. I also halted Junyo even to bring Junyo/Hiyo in as a pair....I didn't see a need to accelerate them as USN unlikely to challenge KB in first 6 months. I also halted construction of most submarines except for half-dozen nearly complete float-plane subs

Doing all that allows you to accelerate all the CVs without adding additional Naval SY capacity....that gives you a large reinforcement of CVs just as the USN is also receiving CVs in 1943, and should keep the IJN competitive for longer

IIRC this involves entering the river mouth to get there, and I don't think BB's can do that.

I don't think there is a cut and dry answer here....other than your builds (plane and ship and economy) should synergize with your overall game goals.

Some JFBs can use the super heavies really well...others not so much.

I have mirrored your strategy Q-ball in the past, and also done the exact opposite building the super heavies and submarines -- both strategies can work or really anything between.

Same holds true with CS-CV conversions. Here though I prefer to leave CS as CS and stuff them with float fighters....worked really well for me thru 43 into 44 but in 44+ I think having Sams on board a bit better...but again it depends upon what the strategies and game situation is. It is a long conversion.

I addition to what I've said remember bombardment TF's can and will damage all production at a base.

I can see the argument both ways. The CS Conversions are a whole subject to themselves! I can see the debate either way since they can be useful as CS and the conversion is very long, but they are clearly more useful in 1944 as CVL
