I started a v1.21.00 game as the Allies on veteran level. It's the Nov. 27 turn and Poland still hasn't fallen. Is that a fluke? Should I start a new game?
Thanks for any opinions.

Depends a bit, what have you been doing to delay the Germans that long?

I played the Polish units to the best of my ability. I moved an Army into Warsaw, used my air units as a blocking force, etc.

You are probably just a lot smarter than the AI.

While the AI is genuinely pretty good for a game of this nature - against a human who understands the game, it is dumb. It doesn't position its units well, it doesn't plan its strikes well, it isn't good at using HQs. If you are doing these things halfway well, you will get really good outcomes against it. Humans are better opponents! (And the ELO tournament is a whole different kettle of fish!)

I only played a partial '39 game vs AI as Allies on expert.

Poland didn't fall until November.

Paris fell late July which was fairly reasonable.

Hi everyone,

I'm back playing SC games after a 9 month (or so) hiatus to try WarPlan and a few other games...and I can't for the life of me seem to take Poland out in two turns against the AI on Normal difficulty.

It seems that the Polishes forces have been beefed up and my panzer spearheads unable to penetrate deep enough to strike Warsaw on turn two. Is taking Poland in two turns still the norm when playing the AI on normal? Am I that bad after not playing for almost a year?

This is the best I can get starting turn two and Warsaw already looks out of reach until turn three...

Any tips would be appreciated.

Cheers,

C

Hey Christolos,

the southern area seems ok for me but you can do better in the north. The garrison can secure Danzig so your two corps can move towards Warsaw. You should try to capture the two towns west of Warsaw, at least the tanks should be in town to reach the hex in front of warsaw on turn 2. The northern HQ can be moved forward to eventually reattach units for the attack.

Many thanks Soulcollector!

I'll try to better my approach in the North.

Cheers,

Probably dumb question:
Is there any downside (except loosing a few MPPs) to taking 1-2 turns longer with Poland? This seems such a good opportunity for XP farming and if you don't plan an early invasion of France your troops imho literally have nothing better to do.

Polish defeat on turn 2 helps you a lot imho. You get the plunder (up to 399MPP I think) to start research/diplo earlier. And you don´t have to operate units, you can just force march them during fall and winter and still reach the western frontline in time.

I recently forcemarched the northern tank to Lodz (after I captured the necessary hexes in between) so I had both tanks in full striking distance. Worked quite well.
It is important (and tricky) to have the tanks at Lodz at 6 supply at the beginning of the second turn.

Not getting Poland in Turn 2 is not the end of the world tho.
You can usually still start forcemarching a big part of your army towards france.
For me Poland in turn 2 is more of a morale boost haha

How did you like WarPlan compared to SC?

Hi Tanaka,

I liked it at first, but it is still new and seemingly still full of bugs and constant new rule changes which are hard to keep up with (the reason I came back to SC games), but these are constantly being addressed by a dedicated developer (Alvaro Sousa) with the help of dedicated hardcore players who are testing and commenting, so eventually, it will be a really great game, just like the SC series, but different in other ways. By comparison SC games are more mature and refined simply because they have been around for a lot longer. The WarPlan games are very good and will only get better, especially the planned WarPlan global war version that is being worked on. My understanding is that it will be improved (particularly the naval game aspect) based on lessons learned by the developer.

Hi Duedman,

What worked for me was to use the garrison in Konigsberg (thanks again Soulcollector!) which helped me improve my Northern penetration and prevention of Warsaw being too shielded by Polish forces not encircled and trapped. The Germans still need to inflict sufficient casualties and capturing Lodz, even if on turn 2, seems to be important to get the surrender on turn 2.

Agreed, but it can be tricky...
