This year I picked up WITE-2 and WITW. The former first and then the later when I realized, I got an air war in the box ... always loved WWII planes.

TBS and and HEX is really new for me, since my operational gaming was more Panther Games continuous hexless (Beta Team Alumnus) and AGEOD WEGO (former member).

Yet, I really like these two GG titles, and I would consider them pseudo-TBS, since most of the air war is WEGO in style and ground combat with RESERVES also has a simultaneous feel.

I was impressed with the superb documentation of WITE-2 and the tremendous detail (and value for a dollar) after doing HOI4 in 2020. I would say the two titles are about 85% similar.

* I don't image I am going to find WITP-AE similar. I am watching SGD's tutorial series - he does fantastic tutorials.

* I understand that the documentation is going to be dated, and there is no living manual. This is more like Paradox ... depend on the community for help.

* WIN10 with 2 displays 32" 1080p TV and 21" 4:3 panel. I want to run two displays, and play in a Window on the TV. Use the other display for reference material while playing. I understand I should be able to do that, and using the seabee utility ... it will get me there; and there is a B or C beta patch.

* I also understand that this game has a lot more mods: graphics, UI, AI, map, and scenarios than WITW or WITE2 ... so a great deal of replay.

* Finally, I am thinking of the Winter Sale. What's the game usually reduced to while on sale?

Please share your thoughts while, I go off to watch the rest of SGD's YT tutorials.

Thank you very much for your time!!!

I was a tester on WITE-2, so I am very familiar with that one. It's a very good game, but it does not hold my attention like WITP-AE does.

This game is more complex, and has alot more strategy nuances, too much to possibly put here! It takes awhile to get knowledgeable, but if you're not afraid of PBEM there are newer players here

In general, a few things:

1. If you are hung-up on graphics, this is not your game. It's functional enough. If you like WITE-2, you'll be fine.
2. With 1-day turns, it's a big commitment; much more than WITE-2 with 1-week turns. Games are going to take years, literally
3. The forum is AWESOME for advice; you can post almost any question and it will get answered in detail. Use the SEARCH feature first, but acknowledge that it's not very effective all the time

I would take the plunge and buy it, you won't regret it as long as you understand the time commitment

This game has held my interest for over a decade now which is unprecedented. Of course it helps if you have a deep interest in the subject matter.
But oh yeah....grab it when it goes on sale.

As for the Winter Sale, AE has been on sale for under $20 in some previous years. It's a steal at that price!

1. I would actually say WITPAE is much better than WITE2 in the graphics department. WITW and WITE2 do not have planeside and shipside combat animations. This is one of the coolest unique aspects of WITPAE. In fact I would say with mods the graphics in WITPAE can look pretty damn good!

quote:

The map art in War in the East 2 works in a completely different way than WITPAE. Rather than large panel bitmaps, it uses a series of somewhat generic tile art ( mountains, woods, swamps, etc. ) to generate the art for each hex. Basically it's a mosaic system not a tableau. Which gives the map a rather bland and vanilla appearance, but likely speeds up game performance and saves space.

Like WITPAE the map art in WITE2 can be modded. You can go in and jazz up the individual art tiles. But unlike WITPAE you can't really give the overall map a sense of individual style or specific geography. It's sort of like creating a wall mural with a pile of generic bricks painted with a limited palette of colors rather than just painting it direct. Yeah, it's like comparing a mosaic to a full spectrum painting. Mosaics can look okay from a distance, but less impressive close up when you just start seeing the individual and repetitive tiles. And modding the tiles only goes so far.

War in the West uses the same art system. I imagine it saves the game developers money in the long run though. Rather than having to hire an artist to craft a whole new map for a specific title, they can just 'plug in the blocks' whenever they need another map or extension. But, it makes for a rather uninspiring looking map and really limits the scope of what you can do as a modder. Which is a shame as the map is the item you usually spend 90% of your time looking at in in grand strategic games. I guess we're fortunate that WITPAE was made the way it was.

We are very fortunate to have Andrew Brown and so many other map, UI, and ship/plane modders... Everything can be modded and I have modded my game myself up to JFB standards...

This is my favorite map currently:

2. Agree 1 day turns is a HUGE commitment (Years) but a 1 Day turn PBEM in WITPAE is a strategy game like no other.

3. Unfortunately have to disagree here. The forum has become a difficult place to ask ANY question even if you have searched the forum and manual. There are a lot of helpful people here but also difficult ones that will attack you just for asking a question. Be prepared to be chastised. I think it is because the forum and a lot of the players have been around for such a long time (We go back to PacWar, Uncommon Valor, and WITP) and everything has been discussed at some point you just have to weed through everything to find it. This can be difficult because there is so much out there. Oh and if you take a break for a few years be prepared to have to learn a lot of it all over again.

It is the biggest most complicated difficult game on the planet to learn and playing as the Japanese is a whole other level and game in itself (the economy) so you will have lots of questions. Try and find the answer yourself first but if you can't be prepared to defend your question. Like he said the search function can be difficult to use and not everything is perfectly specified in the manual and patch notes you need more player perspective/experience for a lot of things.

That being said DEFINITELY get this game. As Strategy Dojo also says in his series and I completely agree this is the best game ever made as so many here will attest and you will get a lifetime of game play. I do not think another game this great will ever be made again. I say it is the best game ever made because it was made by experts in every field that came together that will never come together again to make another game like it ever again. Truly a once in a lifetime accomplishment by an amazing team:

Although rangerJoes answer is good, his example is not. The poster in the thread he quoted wanted specific information on ground combat, it was specific enough to be able to provide an answer.

This game isn't just good, it is exquisite. As far as I know, there isn't anything else comparable.

Tell me another game that has HMS Abdiel as a ship you can use! Look it up, if you don't know about it. Individual pilot's like Thatch or Boyington actually in the game?. Awesome.

That said, this game will take a very long time to get used to. I'm still not there yet. But others are, and the folks here are friendly, even if they don't think they are.

Best Regards,

Thank you very much for your thoughts, and links. It was nice to find out that AE was a labor of love "above and beyond".

I will pick it up during the Winter Sale.

I was SGD watching videos. I get a sense that starting WITE-2, I have a 50% sense of how GG does games which is useful.

But I think the strongest reason why to purchase and put on the side:

* Great value and a great game.

* Support GG and Matrix. No one produces the comprehensive quality he and team does.

Why put it on the side? 'Full campaign will take years. I am already familiar with this investment from WITW and WITE-2; also I am ignorant of 40's sea warfare; not land and air.'

I am retired which both means I have lots of time and my time is limited (the clock is ticking down).

My 2022 resolution is to cycle between 3, maybe 4 game engines.

* WITW/WITE-2

* CMx2-v4 (I have all titles and DLCs)

* MIUS/Tunisia (all DLCs)

* Maybe CO2 (as an alumni with my name on the front page, I get everything). If the mega patch get done.

I don't see time in there for WITP-AE. But again I would like to own it. A silly notion, but I think as long as I have infinite content to get through, I cannot die.

Again thanks for you thoughts and guidance.

Forgot to mention to reduce game time you can play 1,2,3,4 day turns. 1 of course is the best way to play though. SGD is playing 2 day turns in his game. Also there are lots of smaller battle scenarios you do not have to play the grand campaign. Coral Sea, Guadalcanal, Aleutians, Burma, Marianas, it's all in there...

Yep, I saw that an am currently improving my skills with scenarios in WITW and WITE-2.

Paste checks show the Winter Sale will start on 11/26. I will buy it then.

Finding what mods to runs seems somewhat obscure if you are new. I like Steam's workshop, since you can just search for most popular mods over all time; and check the first 10 screens.

It there any well organized/maintained resource of: map, AI, and scenario mods for the game?

Also, why is there a B and C unofficial betas? What should one run?

Thanks.

You can find most mods here:

https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tt.asp?forumid=715

I recommend AndyMacs updated scenarios/AI in that link. He wrote the AI for the game. I recommend the map I posted above. Although Andrew Brown (who did the maps for the game) just updated his maps as well. A lot of it is art preference but Andrew did update some map data so I might switch to his in the future. His are in the main forum. His extended map is mainly for PBEM only.

Download the official updates and then:

WITPAE last official patch is, AIUI, the same as what was the v1.86a (Edit-beta numbering) patch. After that, MichaelM released the v1.86b (Edit - also the beta numbering) patch which fixed a couple of things. Once you apply that you have it "all". Meaning, officially all.

There are then mods, and many of them, for all sorts premises. Some of these use the extended map, some stock. I only use stock, but YMMV. The usual suggestion is to have a complete and separate installation for extended map games with its own "beta desktop shortcut" with your switches applied.

The best way to get responses here is to search first because it's probably been answered, but if not, be specific, detail is important, and a screenshot paints a thousand words.

Tanaka,

Thank you very much. It seems that multiple directories are allowed. So, I will have one Matrix Stock, and one AndyMac Scenario/AI with Andrew Brown map for SP. I don't MP or PBEM.

I got 2Gb of SSD. Space is not tight. No reason to fiddle with JSGME. Also, I don't like renaming. I will use a Microsoft Junction. So, I can just flip it and change what all references are referring to.

Now, I wait for a sale.

I personally think learning WITE-2 is like a base class on GG design and games. As it is pretty much a collection of his game, UI, and process concepts as they have evolved through the years. Kind of like learning Latin will help as a base for many West European languages.

Thank you again!

Glad you are in with us.

If you like WW2 aircraft you are in for a real treat with WITP-AE.

I don’t know how much you know about the Pacific War but you
might want to pick up a few books as well.

This is my recommended reading list:
http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/fb.asp?m=3863933
But…..take a look at the entire thread.

The two I think are the best starters for someone interested in WW2 aircraft are
Fire in the Sky and Shattered Sword. They are must have in my opinion.

Welcome.

We will have to agree to disagree regarding the value of installing the last two betas.

The bugs introduced by the betas have a far more serious negative impact on game play than the positives from the fixes. The "fixes" address issues which only sometimes apply viz the at sea replenishment still works even without the fixes, it is just that without the "fixes" the Allied player has to be more careful how they do it, whereas the fix" allows an Allied player to be more lazy. The introduced bugs on the other hand simply cannot be avoided irrespective of how careful the player is. They structurally neuter an important gameplay design feature.

So, Alfred, you are saying stop before 1.86b (the unofficial beta); just stick 1.86a (the official patch)?

What's opinion of other peoples AI's that they have done?

I thought I saw somewhere that on the members page there is a "c" patch?

Are user AI just parameter tweaks or is the AI scripted in some interpreted programming language that allows for changes in behavior?

Myself, I prefer what provides the best AI challenge; not that I expect to very well.

The Red Army just encircled me while pushing toward Leningrad!!! grumble

Trugrit,

Thanks for the reading list. I mainly play games and take grad courses during my retirement. I don't have time for books as well.

First time I've heard of this. Interesting about sea replenishment. What other bugs were introduced?

Also looking at Big B mod I guess the Okha was never fixed?

https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=ZGVmYXVsdGRvbWFpbnxiaWdic3NoaXB5YXJkfGd4OjZhYWUxZTQ0YWI0MDc1NDE

4) Identified and fixed the problem with the Ohka series flying bombs being unavailable
(problem inherited from stock).

It's a shame michaelm75au is not still around...

If you use AndyMacs updated scenarios the Okha error has been fixed. It is a scenario data file error, not a program error.

Could you please explain what are these bugs?

The biggest is the no naval support at SPS 0 port.

Flick through this thread as a refresher.

The AKE issue highlighted by GetAssist in separate threads is also significant and shows the repenishment bug quashing was not as successful as so many believe it to be. All up not surprising as these betas did not undergo the usual Henderson Field Design oversight.

Hmm, is there ever to be another official patch?

"Official" doesn't always mean "quality". There was the Harpoon debacle here where many found the bug count to be growing as opposed to shrinking with each official update.

Then, there is Paradox which has made inserting bugs and selling the fixes with its DLC into a business model.

One of the biggest problem is losing people who really know the code, and using short term stand ins to fix what appear to be point problems, but actually are deeply interwoven into the entire design.

---

I found about 3 bugs in WITW's UI this week. I didn't even report them. I doubt they will be fixed, and as they were UI and not mechanics ... the player can live with them. It was clear that there was a failure to follow the coding convention that each module has a single entry and exit. It was the multiple entries that sometime results in some very weird screen configurations.

At this late date 12 years after its release I think no. This game got a lot of post-release support for a very long time by a dedicated volunteer who squashed a lot of bugs, but I believe that's long over now.

It's a rare complex program such as this with zero defects.

It's was proven by Turing that it is impossible to mathematically show that code is bug free or ever halts.

---

One technique which we use to use to estimate how many unfound bugs remain in a system goes like this. You insert 10 defects of intermediate complexity into a system. You then turn over the build to the SQA Department for testing, based on the number of bugs they locate versus what you inserted and the history of the code, you can extrapolate how many bugs still exist in the code and have yet to be detected.

So, it is no surprise that I can find bugs in WITE-2, and they tell me ... 'oh, maybe it was introduced with the last beta'. Then, I go back and find the same bug in WITW. When I used to beta, we had a very diverse team. Some were military vets with plenty of procedural experience. Some were history nuts very well read in the details of battles, weapons, doctrine, and tactics. And finally, 25% were like me gamers with experience in software development.

---

Although not a pacifist; I am definitely not a war monger. What draws me to games like this is detailed modeling of the real world. I want games that act as closed systems which can be reasoned about and treated as real world experiences. You cannot do this with fantasy and sci-fi. But a war game about well documented conflicts can easily be tested against historical results and verified for the quality of modeling. GG is simply amazing. Most games, I call "programs". GG's works are really at the level of sophistication I would class them as "small scale systems".

Welcome.

BTW,

Two excellent books I read while recovering from a heart attack was:

Wahoo

and

Clear the Bridge!

by Captain Dick O'Kane USN Retired.
