Ladies and Gentlemen,

I'm really hoping that someone can come up with a solution to this. I'm trying to come up with a scenario that wont so much be played as be used to teach a concept to some students of mine in the area of anti-air warfare.

When we deploy into these engagements, we set up zones to deal with threats. To name just 3 of these that I'm most interested in trying to model, they are the Fighter Engagement Zone, the Crossover Zone, and the Missile Engagement Zone.

As it sounds, the FEZ is where aircraft will dogfight, engage with their own missiles, and generally be the first layer of air defence against a threat. Then, as the target continues into the force, they hit the Crossover Zone and the friendly fighters peel off to clear the area to allow the contact to be engaged with ship borne missiles. These missiles are fired as the contact reaches the MEZ.

Now in CMO, I'm able to create a patrol area the radius of the FEZ (not quite realistic, but that's a problem for another post), but because I can't 'cut a hole in it' it extends over the COZ and into the MEZ as well. Does anyone know how to do this?

The only thing I can think of is creating the FEZ at X outer radius with ref pts. Then create an inner FEZ ring with ref pts of Y radius After you create the FEZ with only the our X radius, use the inner Y radius ref pts as a no nav zone to keep the friendly aircraft out. It will work well until someone goes RTB. You would have to keep activating and deactivating the inner zone. That complication right there might make it too much. You could also play around with switching aircraft from one side to allied side.

I haven't completely thought this out, but maybe someone can add the needed details or crap all over it.

I was thinking for the MEZ being a Nonav zone with Relative RP's on ZZ but that most likely will interfere with other air assets.

I'm embriotic on the Lua but could you make a circle around ZZ were those specific CAP's are not allowed to enter?

Thinking about this more, a good feature request would be a mission-specific exclusion zone. The ultimate feature would be the ability to build concentric mission areas. I could see a lot of use for that. I think the solution for the OP right now, would be a little lua mixed in with an inner exclusion zone.

Depending on how it worked I could as well.

As for the question. Probably already tried this (or I'm misunderstanding) but ...

A cap mission(s) with fez rp's and proczone rp's (with a tiny tiny couple hundred meter break in it) and options selected to restrict movement\engagements of targets related to the mission zone. crossover defined rp area, where every 5 seconds in lua you check if any of your aircraft are inside it and also 'engaged' offensively (there could be 3-4 possible values that might indicate this state), could also check what they're actually engaged with perhaps and limit the next action to weapons, if they are engaged, 'force' disengage them and reassign back to original mission. This crossover would also probably be outside the WRA of said sample ships. Lastly your MEZ while you could define the rp's to display it would effectively just also just be the WRA ring around the ship.

What problems are you running into when doing something like that?

I'm not sure if this is what KnightHawk75 is saying, but to answer the OP you can indeed get a doughnut-like zone (patrol and prosecution) in CMO by making a rectangle with a lot of extra points and bending it back on itself, like so:

Obviously the more points that you use, the better you can approximate a circle.

Yup that was a better illustration showing "the gap" in what I meant, via the hairline gap in my quick mspaint attempt.

Chaps,

Thank you very much for your replies, and I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back on here and reply.

I did have the above thought, but I didn't think it would work correctly. On balance, however, since I only need it to convey a theory I think that'll be the best solution to my problem. I'll certainly be putting something in the feature request thread if I can think of a way to phrase it and come up with a rough idea of how it would be implemented.

Thanks again!

Sometimes the simplest solution is the one mostly overlooked.
