One of the attributes for ship upgrades is the "minimum shipyard size". For some upgrades the shipyard size is as low as 5. If a port has a size of 5 is it large enough to carry out an upgrade or does one have to find a actual/real shipyard.

I have found in the couple full campaigns as Allies that ships in smaller ports can upgrade when they probably shouldn't. I think one was a freight to AE conversion in Chittagong if memory serves. Checking it is easy enough.
So, in my experience there are many ports where upgrades can be done, a shipyard is definitely not required. Start a new game and after turn one resolution start poking around and trying to upgrade.

Shipyard size is referring to repair yards and not port size. The two are not the same and completely indepenant of each other.

If the upgrade for a 10,000 ton ship requires a size 5 shipyard, the shipyard can do it even if the ship cannot fit in the drydock. Shipyards are abstracted and include things like cranes and machine shops. Sometimes you just need to lift off a heavy device and lift on the replacement - not drain the water under the ship.

I never seen upgrades waving their shipyard size conditions. Note that there is a whole lot of different upgrades and shipyard requirements. some of the upgrades don't require shipyard at all

No, the answer is very straightforward and unambiguous. There are no ifs, buts, maybes.

If the ship upgrade specifies a shipyard size, the upgrade can only occur at a location with a shipyard of a minimum size as specified. Nothing else will substitute.

Where no shipyard size is specified the upgrade can occur at a suitably sized port. The exact formula is not for public disclosure but it takes ships tonnage into account. A bigger ship needs a bigger port.

The official scenario designers were not inclined to allow combat ships to be upgraded without a minimum shipyard size as a requirement.

As this is your first transgression, the Holy Father has decided to be lenient and only impose excommunication and a penance for the next six months of reciting daily 10 Hail Mary's. Furthermore the excommunication will be subject to review if you conduct some good works, such as a generous donation to the bell tower repair fund.

IIRC Don Bowen might have said having naval support on hand also helps.

Naval support does not have any effect on the initial repair delay of an upgrade nor is it affect the size of repair yard. I've just upgraded a number of APDs in various ports with varing naval support and they have all said 17 days estimate, 18 if you include the day it enters. I'd go even further and say this time is fixed no matter how much naval support you've got or what size the repair yard is. I've just checked all the APDs under repair all seem to be taking the same time. By the way these repair yards are Soebaja (s10)(ns356), Manila (20)(319), Singas (50)(436), Hiroshima (120)(130) and Tokyo (100)(26).

You have misunderstood the matter I was referring to.

I did not say naval support could somehow lessen the requirement for a shipyard to a level less than the minimum specified upgrade requirement. Because it does not.

Nor did I say that having naval support could somehow lessen the minimum delay time imposed by some upgrades. Because it does not.

Please read what I said again. This time please read it by reference to Alfred's statement about requirements ... "Where no shipyard size is specified the upgrade"... which is what it referred to in isolation.

Some Allied ships can be upgraded in ports WITHOUT repair yard, depending on the upgrade.

Of course they can. Where there is no minimum dockyard requirement for the upgrade.

However, as Alfred said, if there is no repair yard requirement... then a port with the right ... repair/conversion value will suffice.

Unfortunately there are some people around here who fail to comprehend that naval support squads will affect the latter valuation.

I am not referring to a miss spelling anything.

I am referring to something happening in WITP:AE.

The bell tower repair fund is coming along nicely, so the Holy Spirit has provided further revelation in this 2020 thread.
