Hello! For the first time since.....2015? I am putting out a WITP-AE AAR. I'll have to find my last AAR vs. Greyjoy, which continued until 1944 until I surrendered. Hopefully I won't surrender this time!

821Bobo (Robert) is welcome to say HI, but that will be it for Ops Sec reasons. He is a very good and gracious opponent; we recently played this same scenario 28 on the opposite sides, and ended in late 1943 for RL reasons. We are doing a rematch, same scenario, but switching sides.

We are using pretty standard Dec 7 rules.

Here are the House Rules:

1. PPs for National Borders. (RTA may go to neighboring countries)
2. Fighters max altitude at 2nd-highest MVR band
3. Limits on Bombing
a. No 4E Naval under 10K, except PBY Liberator, Mavis, Emily
b. Tactical Night Bombing limited to 2 units (Strat Night Bombing unlimited)
c. No Strategic Bombing in China
d. Allies cannot Strat Bomb Japanese-occupied territory, EXCEPT OIL/REFINERIES

We can discuss more/less as needed, both of us agree not to do obviously gamey things that shouldn't need rules, like mass of 1 PT-boat TFs, Jakes on subs, para fragments, etc.....

Comments and advice of course welcome! That's the point of course!!!!

The initial turn looks fairly standard; KB raids PH. (Will post results later once Robert comments). There are Japanese landings at 3-4 places on Luzon, including Mauban and San Fernando. There is a landing on JOLO, no doubt to establish an airbase to take care of the herd of ships from Manila. The only Malaya landing is Khota Bharu, and it looks like the Japanese are landing at Singora and Patani.

Dec 7th Landings

The landings on Malaya were the historical ones; nothing special or crazy. It looks like though he's going all-out for the Phillipines early.

There is a landing on JOLO, no doubt to set-up an airbase on that Size-3 airfield. We'll have to see if we can do anything about that; otherwise it's going to be a pretty hot run through the Makassar Strait for all the units fleeing Manila

MARBLEHEAD can make 21 knots; there are some fires, but the damage is moderate. If he hunts her she should be gone.

There are landings at Legaspi, Mauban, Apparri, Vigan, San Fernando.

The attacks on Manila were very good, you can see below; I lost 2 subs outright, and 3 more are not seaworthy; they need a couple turns to pump out, but not sure I'm going to get that!

Overall:

I obviously cannot stop the Empire in the SRA, but the key IMO is to show some aggressiveness. Need to force the Japanese to cover all TFs with aircover and/or surface ships for fear of having a TF jumped by Allied warships. Most of the warships that start in the SRA are obsolete, so it's not going to hurt the Allied war effort much if we lose a few......another reason to be aggressive.

I'll post later on China. I have NEVER won a game in China regardless of side; as Japan, I get stopped, as China I lose the whole thing. We'll see if I can reverse that trend.

Hong Kong DDs

Toward the "Being Aggressive" part, I sent the Hong Kong DDs to Takao to see if we could catch a TF in the Harbor. We did!

Too many Catalina losses, and not one torpedo drop....so that was disappointing. No troops killed either, we'll probably sink a couple transports and if nothing else remind 821Bobo that he's going to need aircover in the SRA.

Elsewhere:

No 2nd Attack at Pearl Harbor. I was worried about one as the Runways were closed; I moved 55 fighters to Lahaina to provide LRCAP over Pearl from there. But no attack. It may have been the smart move, every time I've hit it twice I mostly get pilots killed....the Flak is very heavy in this mod, DDB-C. KB is moving west toward Wake/Truk.

Khota Bharu falls, and the Japanese sweep Singapore from Soc Trang, shooting down 10 Buffalos....probably should have parked them on the ground that turn!

Could take tips from Alfred:

4. Unlike every other theatre and nationality , totally destroyed Chinese divisions respawn. Combined with the 12:6 VP ratio, provided a real strategic/operational benefit is gained, no Allied player should be concerned about having Chinese troops cut off and destroyed.

5. In China, the Allied player needs to both concentrate and disperse his units. All divisions must be concentrated with their Group Army HQ = corps. Mass is required to force the enemy to deploy sizeable forces to achieve success in battle. In turn the consolidated corps must be dispersed to

(a) threaten Japanese LOC
(b) overwatch enemy cities to force enemy garrisoning of their own cities to protect industry
(c) force the enemy "off road" which slows down their manoeuvre speed

6. Ultimately China is all about time. Japanese assets deployed to China are not available for use elsewhere. This provides Allied opportunities elsewhere. The opportunity cost for Japan can be huge.

7. A passive defence of China will not succeed. What is required is an active defence, based not on seeking combat but by manoeuvre which threatens enemy positions which have been weakened by the desire to create an overwhelming schwerpunkt. The firepower of the Japanese puppet forces is weak. those units are even more fragile than most Chinese divisions.

Bearing in mind the above, these are starting points for blocking and manoeuvring forces.

(A) Immediately evacuate (includes air force) everything north of Lanchow except for minimal garrison forces at Urumchi/Hami/Kinchuan. The latter two are blocking positions and will survive on Urumchi generated supplies.

(B) Immediately withdraw from Yenan except for the required garrison. If the garrison is provided by the Base Force, you will be able to fly recon missions from Yenan. Otherwise that city is simply a death trap which need not even be captured by Japan.

(C) To slow down any Japanese move on the northern oilfields, the 3 key blocking positions are:

92,34 (Paotow)
92,38

All three hexes are mountain. The first two protect the eastern approach to Lanchow and the southern approach to Hami. The last cuts the railway and overwatches the enemy bases of Taiyuan/Chengting/Tatung, the latter being an important resources generator.

(D) The blocking positions on the eastern approach to Sian are:

90,40
90,41
88,41
87,41
88,42 (Tsiatso)

These positions must not be simply given away as almost every Allied player does when they immediately start an unforced retreat back towards Sian. These positions disrupt the enemy LOC and therefore weakens any Sian schwerpunkt which bypasses them. Do not overlook the auto generated supply at Tsiatso.

The absolute key Sian blocking position is 88,42. It is the junction of the eastern approach from Loyang and the southern approach from Nanyang. It is the closest position to the Allied supply depot at Sian and conversely the furthest away from the enemy supply depots. It does not make sense, as Allied players reqularly do, to defend in multiple wooded + rough hexes to cover both potential enemy axes of advance and close to the enemy supply depots.

Sian itself needs to retain its good garrison to meet any river crossings from the east. If the enemy bypasses all the blocking positions and elects to undertake the river crossing, not only will it be weakened from it's less than optimal LOC but it becomes very vulnerable to a single LCU being detached from the blocking position at 88,42 to come in from behind and trap the enemy.

(E) Consolidate the Lusu corps around and continue to threaten Kweiteh. Another valuable auto generated Chinese supply source which happens to lay right in the middle of a key enemy railway. Doing so also helps the defenders of Loyang and Chengchow.

(F) The valuable industrial region of Changsha/Siangton/Shaoyong/Hengyang/Changteh is defended by garrisons in the cities themselves, not units outside the cities. In particular, Changsha is not to be abandoned under any circumstances. The units which start outside of Changsha are to immediately be brought back into Changsha to build forts. The auto generated supply combined with the terrain and one of the most powerful at start Chinese consolidated corps means Japan can be bled white here. Destroyed Chinese units at Changsha will get to Chungking before their exhausted opponents do. Plus by maximising the engineers, a wrecked industrial price might be all that the enemy gains ultimately.

(G) For the southern region, the key blocking positions are Pingsiang, Pucheng and 87,56. All lie on the best enemy LOC. If captured by the enemy aim to get new units to recapture them as it is unlikely the enemy will stop to safeguard these conquests.

(H) Two key ports to be retained are Kwangchown and Wenchow. Consolidate forces in their vicinity. These ports can be resupplied by sub (Wenchow is itself a significant supply centre) and provide excellent "naval search eyes" on enemy convoys to assist the Dutch and S class subs.

(I) The blocking positions for Chungking are:

71,48 (also key for Kunming)

81,40 (most of the eastern approach is covered by holding Sian)

74,48

these cover the southern approach.


By consolidating corps and positioning them in blocking positions it means that it is possible to detach units to close the door after being bypassed. Plus by not maintaining a linear MLR, mobile consolidated corps to threaten weakly garrisoned enemy rear bases can be created.

I'm liking the low level attacks on IJ shipping. Suitable anti-shipping aircraft on Luzon isn't a requirement to be a right nuisance for the IJN and even a 500lb bomb can prove fatal!

China:

On China, I have seen that writeup and am following it. First priority is to get all units out of open terrain, especially those in danger of being left behind. Yeah, I know they re-spawn, and if they are cut-off that's fine....but first priority is to see if I can get them somewhere useful on high ground. This is going to mean abandoning a couple cities that produce supply, but can't be helped. I'll probably post pictures later on this theater. I will leave a max garrison in Wenchow, which auto-generates supplies and is 3x terrain, and is a real pain to take.

I have bought the 254th Indian Tank Bde and 43rd Cav Regt, moving those to Burma, then to China. They are useless right now (but cheap), but in a few months should be trained, and equipped with Stuarts and Valentines, which should be a big help. For now, the "Chinese Expeditionary Force", or "CEF" will slowly make their way to Chungking.

I am moving all the supply I can get my hands on to Rangoon/Burma to be moved into China. I even loaded up the remaining AKs in Hong Kong with supplies to dump in Kangchowan (they are all damaged, so doomed anyway, just hoping for 1 trip). Getting as much supply as I can to China.

I am moving some of the "buyable" units to India to feast on Allied supplies. At least if China collapses, I'll have a "Free China Army" at my disposal.

Other Tidbits:

I am moving units all over the place in order to disrupt Japanese plans and be unpredictable on how much to bring to an invasion. Some examples:

--Evacuating Rabaul completely; units will be deployed elsewhere
--Flying fragments of both Canadian units in Hong Kong to China; they will go to India to rebuild. Unlike most Commonwealth units, there are Canadian squads in the pool, so will use these two Bns quickly
--18th UK Division diverted to Bombay
--I am sending a Ghurka Bde to Cocos Islands. Plan for this to be a major pain.

These are just a few examples, but trying to keep the Empire off-balance a bit by having large garrisons in suprising places, and no garrison in others

When he disappeared he was dealing with the death of his father and serious romantic life issues. He was also hinting that the law practice was getting pretty intense. What I like to do against the AI is to take the Hong Kong ships and use them in Amphibious mode to load up as many military refugees and supplies, then sent them to Kangchowan or even dump them on the coast if you have to. That way, I don't have to buy back the units and they can march to India if needed.

I think Luzon is an early focus for Robert; this bit of intel confirms it for me:

13/4th Division is loaded on a Kongo Maru class xAP moving to Aparri.

If he was going to bypass and move on, he wouldn't be sending the 4th Division there. So he intends to close out Luzon early. The Dec 7th landing at Mauban has cut-off the 51st PA Division, and the landing at San Fernando trashed another PA division. Everyone else is falling back on Manila, which will be last stand city. The airfields are pretty much closed, just trying to repair the last few aircraft and get them out.

Fleeing Manila!

The Manila Dec 7th attack was a very good one (for Japan), so I have a ton of damaged ships just trying to make it to safety. Not all of them are going to make it! With Jolo in Japanese hands and RYUJO and friends also hanging out around Mindanao, I have to just send everyone and present too many targets to sink.

This turn he sank the APs ROCHAMBEAU and NEPTUNA, as well as DD JOHN FORD. Plus some AKLs. Not getting alot to saftey so far. I have 6 submarines limping to Soerbaja, and another 4 in docks in Manila that are too flooded to move. They probably won't make it.

Malaya:

Other than taking Khota Bharu, it's been quiet so far. No landings at Mersing. We are moving everyone, save a few small units that are just roadblocks, back to Singers to dig-in.

I moved an RAF HQ unit and the NZ Pioneers to Palembang, to provide Torp capability there and some engineers. I am starting a buildup in Palembang, but won't commit massive numbers...probably enough to alarm Imperial Command though. I'm mostly flying extra Dutch units in that start in useless locations.

Rabaul:

I evacuated Kaveing, but see a convoy approaching, probably those AKLs at start that have a small Nav Gd unit on them. ADELAIDE can intercept, and will if they land.....

Ambush:

Elsewhere, I am hiding cruisers in random dot bases to wait opportunities to ambush unescorted convoys. I am doing this in a couple places. I may have to be patient. For Ops Sec reasons won't reveal where until I get a result

A couple very interesting intel tidbits today....

5/144th Infantry Regiment is loaded on a Japanese xAK moving to Chumphon.

21st Division is loaded on xAP Husimi Maru moving to Aparri.


The 21st Division moving to Aparri is yet another unrestricted division heading to Luzon. We now have the 48th, 16th, 4th, and 21st identified as there, or on the way. That leaves the 2nd (which is prepped for Singapore, so going to Malaya), the 33rd at Nagasaki (which is prepped for Rangoon at-start), and the 38th at Hong Kong which is busy at the moment.

Even more interesting, the 144th Regiment is moving to Thailand! This unit at-start is at Chichi-Jima, and is the "Guam" invasion force. It's the "South Seas" force, and is the handiest unit for quick take of Rabaul. But it's not going that way, it's going to opposite way. He is probably doing this to combine with rest of 55th Division for the Burma invasion. While I hate that there are detached regiments all over like that and also seek to combine them, I would want to grab Rabaul first.

If I read the tea leaves correctly:

1. Luzon is max-effort; I know this for sure now, and can't really do anything about it
2. Malaya is going to be slow-rolled, but nothing I can do about that other than get everyone to Singapore and dig
3. This has REAL implications for SW Pac however; unless he's moving 56th Div that way, he doesn't have any heavy units heading to the Rabaul/Moresby area, or anywhere down there at present.

He could buy the Guards Brigade maybe, but that's all I can think of. Otherwise he would be waiting until Luzon is cleaned-up to bring anything larger than Nav Gd down there. In other words, anything that could dislodge a Brigade or a Regiment.

I have Marines loaded in San Fran on the way to SW Pac, as well as 30th Aus Brigade moving to Townsville. 34th Infantry Regt is also on ships moving SW Pac. I may move some of these forward to Moresby and make a fight there. I definitely wonder if he's even going to try for Noumea.

Thoughts anyone?

I don't like the Luzon first approach as it is not likely to benefit him economically. Go for Malaya, Palembang, and Java. My first major spending of PP is for a Manchurian division to go for Luzon. He is losing out on getting Singapore quickly with Southern Command HQ prepped there, not Manila.
Now, do you go for "Fortress Palembang?" Does the 18th Brit Division head there?

Our European and Australian forum mates are going to be really bored/confused with this part of the post, but......I can see why the Giants did that trade, though as the Bears I would do it several times over. We just really need a QB, and Fields is starting to look like the real deal. I think other teams that could've drafted him are going to regret it; certainly Panthers and Broncos are already having second thoughts since Darnold and Lock don't look like "Guys".

I don't know where Daniel Jones is, but seems like he isn't a franchise QB either, so Giants may need that extra pick to go back to the QB drawing board....

Back to the war...

I tend to agree with you on Luzon. As Japan, I prefer to land early, set up and airbase, drive the Allies into last-stand city (Clark or Manila), then just keep bombing it until they run out of supplies and can be mopped-up later. There is nothing on Luzon you need right away; Manila is a nice port, but it's not necessary for expansion phase. Production there is negligible. As long as you bomb the airbases, Allies can't use Luzon for anything other than Search and refueling subs.

Singapore, IMO, is a must-take. It's a perfect staging port for further expansion, and is blocking the strait toward Rangoon. I think Singapore is deserving of max effort, but that's just me.

ETA: Bears? Giants? Is it true that the over/under for wins for both of them this year is 6? We can't all be Cowboy fans though, can we?

My Giants do have two 1st rounders (currently 6 & 8), a 2nd rounder, and two 3rd rounders to hopefully come away with two more OL which they need. Not giving up on QB D Jones until he gets an average OL in front of him.

Chickenboy - get back to me when the "Girls" get out of the 1st round of the playoffs.

Dec 12-14

Malaya: Not much to post; Japanese are moving down the peninsula, taking Georgetown and getting into the open road. I've pulled everyone back except the Brigade from Kuantan, we'll see if they can make it. Everyone else basically is in Singapore except small blocking units; I have re-formed 11th Indian Division in Singapore.

Luzon: More advances on Luzon; a PI Infantry Division is forced to surrender at Altimonoan. Everyone else is falling back on Last Stand City, Manila.

Borneo: Japanese land at Jesselton. Still no move anywhere else. I have evacuated the garrison at Kuching, and are moving them to Cocos Islands; they'll have some time there to train-up.

Australia: With that intel on where the IJA Infantry Divisions are going (or where I think they are going), I'm moving units forward. I'll move Lark Bn. and 30th Brigade to Port Moresby; I might send another Australian Brigade depending on PPs. Marines and other units are on their way from the West Coast, but it's going to be a couple weeks.

Aleutians: I am moving the Regt that starts in Dutch Harbor to Adak Island. If that goes off without seeing and Japanese, I'll move the Kodiak Regt. to Amchitka.

China: OK, here is where I always need help.

I've successfully ambushed a couple bombing runs with AVG, so he's escorting all his bombers now. Otherwise, I have a few items trying to do here:

1. Evacuate Clear Terrain: Need to get everyone off Clear Terrain and pulled back to 2x and 3x defensive positions blocking major roads. I leave Chengchow without a fight, and about to abandon Loyang. Nanyang I'll leave once I collect units marching there.
2. Find Blocking Positions: I have a problem brewing east of Sian, though; that is a max effort by 3 IJA Divisions, and I don't have enough there. Going to have to quickly shift units to stop them further west.
3. Citadels: I am not giving up supply-generating cities like Tsaitso and Wenchow; I will pull back to them and just hold out.
4. Harrassing: I'll use smaller units to block rail lines and generally run around before they get eliminated eventually.

Anyway, here is the initial map, more to follow....

Do you guys have any house rules about strategic bombing in China? If not, have you calculated the supply impact of having your HI/LI centers burned out?

If you can control the skies over Singapore, you can withdraw some units and I suggest doing so. Those Aussie Brigades will help form a division with three other battalions and you may be short of Aussie squad devices later. Any battalions that you can pull out can go to India and perform garrison duty against partisans as well as holding a base to prevent paratroopers from capturing it.

While pulling out may allow a quicker invasion of the DEI, think if you used those divisions in the DEI, sending one third either to India or Australia to help defend there as well as being able to reform the Division quickly. Even if you don't refill the reformed division with squads, it should be able to have all of the support elements including the AA and artillery guns for defense.

Alternatively, if you decide to fight as hard as you can at Singapore, you must sneak some supply in there. Single xAKLs are best, but sub transport helps too. Argonaut, Nautilus and Narwhal are best at this if they have no mines to plant.

We have a house rule against Strat Bombing in China, so I don't have to worry about that. Even without that, supply will be short. I am dumping supply in Rangoon right now, but there's a limit on that, and already that activity is garnering attention from the Japanese.

I am not sure I'm going to buy out units from Malaya; so many priorities right now on PPs, I have to be careful how I use them. I have already pulled a battalion of Punjabis from Georgetown on Dec 8th; they are back in India. I also pulled an RAF HQ and the NZ Pioneers for Palembang. Not sure if I'll do more or not.

Thanks, I am thinking of this....I do have supplies on the way to the SRA generally, I'll see if I can get some through. So many demands right now on supply though....I have some going to Darwin, but the bulk is going to Burma so I can move it to China.
