Having just (yesterday) purchased this game and the Operation Torch dlc, I now have the set of Gary Grigsby games I want, to keep my brain active during retirement.
I still have a couple of years to go yet but I like to be prepared and can use that time for reading handbooks, advice threads and watching some of the great video guides out there.
Since the market for games of this depth and detail is small and the cost to make them so high, it seems unlikely they'll ever be bettered. I'm not a 'gamer' as such (arcade type fps, etc, leave me cold) but the thinking and planning involved in games like this, WinTE.2 and WitP.AE, do interest me and keep my brain engaged.
Let's hope there's still a following for them in the future and we don't drown in a sea of mind numbing, blast an alien, blow up a planet and warp drive home for supper, stuff.. I know it sells and it's what the young ones go for so market forces dictate that it's where developers will invest their money. Just please don't forget about us old farts, along the way.

I wish I had your foresight. I just retired on May 1st. Found WitE2 when it came out in March. Long story short I have been playing it 3-4 hours a day and I am still going and learning. I have been wargaming since I was 10 years old and I have not found a better game. I just purchased WitW and WitP but I suspect I will not be done with WitE2 for at least another 6 months. Further, I have heard that there are plans to create a mega game that combines WiTE2 & WitW. If that happens, I will need to clone myself or develop some way to warp and slow down time to be able to have enough time to play it.

My advice would be to learn WitE2 first as I suspect there will be an update to WitW that will incorporate many of the changes that WitE2 brought(i.e. air war). However, the diehard grognards say that WitP is the best of the three given its incredible detail. Nothing like micromanaging every plane and ship in teh Pacific Theatre. JUST NOT ENOUGH TIME IN THE DAY!

Enjoy and retirement is fantastic!

I've been playing Gary's war games for 30 years now.
I hope to play them another 30.

My expectation is that the internet will keep this gaming niche alive as long as I need it.

WitPAE is an absolute monster which, despite it's age is unlikely to ever be bettered for detail. Quite possibly much harder to pick up by someone like myself, who has mainly followed the history of the ETO and Great Patriotic War rather than the PTO in WW.II, however my late grandfather served in Burma from late 1943 until war's end, after being transferred from Italy, so I do have some connection to the theatre.
Following WitE2, a WitW2 would seem a logical move so I hope your suspicions prove correct. Even better if it included the whole North African campaign as well.... (we can but dream)
