Without more details and/or without the a save or scen file it's difficult to know exactly what is going on here. First, what unit are you trying to use to carry cargo? Not all units are going to have this capability (for example, ground units in CMO cannot carry cargo at all, and while certain naval units can transport and unload cargo, I don't believe the game currently permits such units to load cargo in the field-only from ports or mobile equivalents). Even if a unit does have the capability to carry cargo it will need an appropriate loadout (at least for helicopters, this may not be true for ships) to actually carry the cargo. Secondly, what unit are you trying to carry as cargo? I don't believe every unit can be carried as cargo (for example, a large air search radar isn't going to be loaded no matter how hard you try), and for units that can be carried as cargo only certain units with certain loadouts will be able to carry them. For example, a helicopter with a loadout for 12 passengers will almost certainly not be able to carry a jeep. Finally, the cargo system implemented in the game currently works by dividing units into generic cargo elements that are different than (but compatible with) the particularized ground units that are often in the database. For example, a US Marine Platoon* might be a database entry and a type of ground unit, but for the purposes of the cargo system it could be composed of 4x Infantry Sections. If you have a helicopter with a passenger transport loadout load the US Marine Platoon, it will be loaded as those Infantry Sections and unloaded as one non-specific infantry unit, not as a US Marine platoon. The same presumably applies to vehicles, which I'm guessing is what happened when your Abrams tank became a generic tank after going through the cargo process. Although it not having a cannon is definitely a flaw. *the names and compositions in this example are hypothetical; I don't know the actual composition of US Marine units in the Database
