Worth searching the forum, this topic has came up plenty of times before and there's still no consensus on it.

That said, the Nate will take you to '48.

OK, I'll take a stab at a serious answer!

IJN:
--A6M5 for CV fighter for me, though some research M5c or M8
--N1K1 all the way for land fighter; research this heavily
--Forget the J2M, N1K1 can do anything it can do, just better

IJA:
--Research Ki-84a heavily; you can pull this into 1943 easily
--TOJO is OK before the Frank
--Oscar also has it's uses; good range, good low-alt cap, IIIa has a good bomb load for low-level Nav attacks. It's not an air superiority fighter though
--You need the NICK because some units only use the Nick. It's pretty good anyway; good range, durable, good firepower for a Japanese plane.
--Forget the entire Ki-61 line; Tojo is better all-around for that role

That's it for 1943.

For Bombers:

IJN:
--G3M3 or Betty, until P1Y1; the Frances is a huge upgrade

IJA:
--Ki-48 Lilly is OK; some like the DB version in 1943, but by this time becoming obsolete
--Ki-49 Helen w Armor is level bomber, but by this time becoming obsolete
--Research the Ki-67(T) to get some torp bombers
--You may end up converting some bomber units to NICKs, because gets tougher to use IJA bombers as war goes on

DBs are never obsolete against subs. They're fatal to xAKs too.

I kind of deserve this answer as there should have been more context to my game parameters. I'm playing Japan where I can control production. Thus, have the opportunity to use R&D to advance some air-frames over others. So that is why the question about planning for adjustments to the historical ac production model.

thanks

Thanks this is close to my findings and thoughts too.

The J2M is a better interceptor... but you don't really need that until late 1943, depending on the game state.

You want Franks and Nicks and some Tojos (or Ki-100's I guess if you can get to the SR1 plane), and then Jacks for defense and N1K1's to keep your opponent honest with long range sweeps. That's basically it.

Is there a good online source for newbies in the Pacific for the US nicknames for Japanese airplanes and/as a cross reference?

Did i post in the wrong thread?? I'm so confused?

I'm still waiting for somebody to write "The Definitive Guide to Japanese Aircraft Research". At least i'm doing better in my 2nd PBEM than i am in my first one.

1943 Aircraft? I'm in early April '43.

IJN:
FT - i chose the A6M5 have had it since '42 and it's good enough. Got the George N1K1-J early '43 and it's good enough.
TB - got the B6N1 Jill in '42 and am now almost complete on CVs with B6N2s. Grace is due in Dec '43
DB - got the D4Y1 Judy late '42 and am now building the D4Y3. D4Y4 probably Dec '43
LB - I just build only G3M3 Nells since '42. P1Y1 Frances is due in May '43

IJA:
FT - I've had the Oscar IIa and Tojo IIc since '42. Oscar IV is building now. Ki-84a is due in May '43.
LB - I just build KI-21-II sallys. Never built a Ha-34 engine. Peggy T is due in Sep '43.
FB - I just build KI-45a Nick's since early '42

never thought twice about the Lily

I have no idea if i'm doing this right

The J2M is a better interceptor... but you don't really..

I researched/build the J2M in this PBM cause I conquered so much territory in China and India which loosened some restriction on IJ economy plus scen2.

In scen1 and with more economic trouble I would NOT recommend this plane. The 1st version is ok but has SR3 and the 2 LMGs are mostly worthless. V2 corrects this a bit cahnging the MGs to 2x20mm plus SR2. This plane is quite good, BUT the George can fullfill the role too. Has the Jack has better climb but otherwise not so much difference.

So only if you are in a good position put stuff into Jack.

I also get a bit of sense of the Tojo value in mid to end 43 now and it decreases - Tojo has insane climb rate but otherwise is also only average. Even the C w/ 4xHMG has trouble getting clear kills even on later Kittihawks and some more against P47/P38/Corsair. I had 1 TojoC and 1 George2 at a base which was swept by Kittihawks and Hurricans, not so dangerous planes normally. And both units have comparable stats (same exp and A2A values for example) but Tojos had more losses and less kills they mostly damaged only, while George gets straight kills. I do not remember the leader stats of the units but in general my frontline units have all comparable good leaders..
