So far I have only been using the bog standard "attack" button. Tried to all-out attack a few times, but even at good odds all I could achieve is serious casualties on my part.

My question is therefore, what is the purpose of "all-out attack, and when to use it?

Also, any advice on the practical application of the other attack types?

thx,

I try not to use All-out attack, unless I am really desperate and need a breakthrough (or a break out from being encircled). Probe I use quite often to get more recon points. I learned it the hard way NOT to attack unknown units.

I find all-out attack useful for the following scenarios:
-Attacking with very low AP. In the first few combat rounds, attacker suffers heavy attack penalty, with low AP (say, 30 AP) your unit will sometimes not be able to drive off even very weak target. All-out attack cancels out the penalty so you have better chance of making that last attack work.
-Small/weak but highly entrenched target. Extra damage to overcome heavy defense and hopefully you can get those RETREAT and KILL hits fast before you suffer too much return fire.
-Against target with low readiness. Unit with low readiness deals less damage and suffers more damage. Similar to the idea above, you are hoping to get hits quickly to force a retreat before receiving much effective defensive fire.

Recon in force/Probe:
-Night attack to get recon on hex so your artillery can fire effectively.
-Probing/reducing pocket. It's harder to know how much supply an encircled unit has left in Ardennes Offensive since unit can store way more supply stock than in previous game. Attacking too early may result in heavy losses. You can try to do a recon in force attack, if the enemy is already starved out RiF will still destroy them, if they can still fight back you'll greatly reduce your losses.

Thanks for the response Herr Klink!

So basically probe gives me recon points? Is it worth it though? Shouldnt I just wait one turn and recon that way (or move more units to the hex etc.)?

Also, there HAS to be a function for all-out attack (though I was unable to found it and am suffering painful lossess even at 10 or 15:1 ratios..)

I watched some videos captured during the beta, and the the tooltip for all-out attack used to say that the attacker gets "more rounds", this however seem to be gone now with the release.
