Below are some bits and pieces of information I found in various threads on this forum. I paraphrased some of it. Also some of the below information is old so may not be accurate. I compiled information for this thread in order to have the Intel in one place. FROM MATRIX FORUM: For Southern Storm, we have added some better control over the use of vehicles post dismount. 1. Bridges - We are stepping out of the gate with what we call short-span bridges, AVLBs that can cross minor water obstacles. As for road/rail bridges, we assume all bridges are capable of supporting vehicles. 2. We have a number of new features and tweaks that will allow you as a player to better control the "style" of movement and engagements for units. Some units will have their own special abilities that will enhance movement modes. Also, there has been a ton of work on unit AI movement, orders delays, and command cycles. 3. We have several overlays and other means to "see" terrain, units, and markers. It's a whole new game in that aspect as to the depth of spotting and information. 4. Engineering has moved to have (or not) discreet units for those AVLBs and general engineers. That will fix the Red Storm issue of anyone can bridge, blow, or remove obstacles. Plus a couple of other options we can't talk about right now. 5. Each unit and its subunits have various sensors and means of seeing terrain, obstacles, and enemy units based on the various sensors each subunit has the weather and the LOS to those targets. While we do cover night (with illumination based on the moon and weather), dawn, dusk, and day settings in a scenario, all of those factors have various levels of impact on the sensors in play. Recon units are better at spotting and identification given the same kit and conditions versus and normal unit. 6. There is a Lost Contact report that can be viewed during the orders phase. Southern Storm will be the foundation of our Cold War game engine (1950ish-1991ish). Southern Storm is the first installment of our new Cold War game engine. Basically a ground up rebuild of the Red Storm system. The new game engine is not compatible with Red Storm as too much has changed with data, maps and models to work. We will be going back after release of Southern Storm and working a DLC called Central Storm that will be a rebuild of the Red Storm and Germany Reforged content to the new Cold War game engine standard. GSRs are now working in the code. In Red Storm, special ammo runs out on a random chance. That has all been changed in the new game engine that has a much deeper ammo model and round tracking. For Southern Storm, we are considering what level of support to include in order for players to create maps easily, with a similar look to the game's default graphics. We will continue the current set-up where any bitmap can be turned into a game map through manual setting of values in the Map Value editor. Red Storm and Southern Front both use hex-based movement. Game maps in Southern Storm are terrain hex bases but have the 1km grid overlay.
