Many words has switched their meanings in the different languages. Almost all in Scandinavia talk English well enough for a normal conversation.

That is the problem with the various forms of the English language as well where words, especially slang terms, have changed their meanings. "Knock up" is a fine example of that!

I understand that the #1 foreign language in Denmark is American English.
