I am running a test to crate runway and notice that no matter how much damage is done on the runway, planes can still takeoff from it. Is there a way to limit the air-ops when the runway is damage beyond say, 75%?

B-52s still take off from a 99% damaged runway?

I have a question. It seems that runways, ammo depot, and fuel storage are indestructible.

Not sure about B-52 but fighter planes planes are taking off with burning 99% damaged runways. Those planes must be piloted by clones from Anakin Skywalker; able to dodge craters and fires. Nothing can stop from reaching the sky.

I found that it takes an entire air command to destroy airfields enough to render them inoperable. I think the key is not so much the runways, but destroying the access points does the trick. This is not always the case though. It is quite a pleasure in blowing up fuel tanks, ammo bunkers, hangars, and control towers. But try destroying the access points. That way, planes can't get onto the runway.

We model warheads and armor, so a bunch of small bombs will not do much to a runway. You need big munitions which will leave large craters, or specialized anti runway munitions.
Even near misses with nukes will not completely destroy runways.

So, if that's the case, then destroying everything else will render an airfield inoperable? Or is this just the realistic fact that runways are truly that well engineered?

Post a save and we'll take a look.

Small enough aircraft (plus STOVL ones) can indeed take off from damaged large runways. This is consistent with real life.

Runways can be damaged, and the damage affects how big an aircraft can use them, but the only way to physically *DESTROY* them (ie. completely remove them from existence) is to nuke them, and with a precise nuclear detonation at that. This is reflected in Command.

Just to chime in. I recently sent 12 Mirage 5M's in a little sandbox scenario I made to try out different units against Cuba airbase in Holguin (from the import file) 6 each at the runway and the runway-grade taxiway. Each Mirage was packing 4 MK83 1000lb bombs. The last 2 Mirage of each aborted due to BDA observed from a UAV. The Mig-23's I placed at the airbase could not take off. They got struck at the access points which I hit with Mk82s later.

If you delete the runway-grade taxiways, no aircraft can take off with the runway at 99.9% damage.
