How do you know if you have activated the Southern Front on turn 1? (is it even logged anywhere?)

I am seeing a lot of activity of newly deployed units along the Romanian board on turn 2. (I have noticed on a prior game as well - I just concluded that I must have made a mistake)

I was pretty darn careful to not activate the Southern Front on turn 1.

Given this is the 2nd time I have seen this, now I am wondering what is going on?

Are these Southern Front units rushing to the front? Or a recent change to Soviet AI scripts?

Yes, same here, he moves extra units to that front unlike before. Version 1.02.11 here.

Ditto.

This is new behavior I did not see before the last couple of updates.

I cannot tell if somehow I have triggered activating the Southern Front or if something else is going on.

You guys mean the Southern Front. Southwestern Front's units are never frozen.

I just retried it with a save-game where I only moved my northern army and then ended the turn: he did indeed activated his southern front. This is in version 1.02.11 (but the savegame was from an older game).

If by "activated" you mean it moved additional units into the area, that is legal. I just ran a quick test and the Southern Front units are still frozen as they should be, but the AI can move additional units into the area.

Thank Joel. That is what I needed to know.

So, when did the Soviet AI start doing this. It must have been fairly recent as I have played many (4 or 5?) games against the Soviet AI and it made no effort to reinforce the Romanian border like this.

Yes, that is what I meant too by activating the south: moving in extra units from all around (with the AI's usual magical teleporter).
