So short of a German pigboat being in a shore hex ... are the only on board units which can attack pigboats limited to land based air units on naval attack with detection & electronics ?

Anything additional features or units or ? which can inflluence the effectiveness of off board escourts ?

land based air can.
If they are attacking a convoy the escorts + naval group bonus

Last turn I took a closer look -you don't have many escorts and some of those look to not be deployed.

I have all the escorts which I started with ... though I have seen a listing of 9(8) or 8(9) ... don't remember ... will have a look once the server gets better .... escorts take awhile to produce .....
