The loss of AP due to ranged combat is a key mechanic of the game. Units that suffer a loss of readiness points in ranged combat (mainly due to pinned hits and retreat hits) also lose AP. The manual says that a unit loses 10 AP per 5 points of readiness loss.

Why is this important? A unit that loses AP is stopped in its movement and - if it falls below 40 AP - can no longer intercept-fire. So basically, it's a suppression mechanism. Obviously tanks and armored units are a bit harder/less reliably suppressed.

However, regarding the loss of readiness points, it is unclear to me what counts as a "unit"? From my experience with the game, it surely does not refer to the unit as the "counter" (whose "readiness" stat just shows the average of the readiness of all contained elements). You can observe that units that lose only 1-2 points of their average readiness still lose a lot of AP to ranged fire. So you cannot make your units invulnerable to suppression effects just by making them larger. But from my impression, it neither refers to absolute loss of readiness points of individual elements? I just had an incident where my halfrracks suffered a lot of pinned hits from AT guns, but nevertheless the unit hardly lost any AP. Maybe the effectiveness loss of transport elements are ignored for determining AP loss? Any clues?
