Status: offline 		I usually despise such detail in games but the Eastern Front is a passion of mine on every level. I mean who could avoid the most epic struggle in history in terms of scale!

I discarded the manual skipped straight to some youtubes, AARs, Matrix Forum Posts and found some quickies on how supply is calculated. Using my previous knowledge of 30+ years of wargaming I figure I can figure some things out but I would like from you all if you wouldn't mind me being somewhat lazy. I love to learn as I go type here: "What do you find Ultimately Important, cannot be neglected and what can I mostly just ignore as I learn?"

I will brush the novel I know after I learn how to handle the stick shift/gasoline/and break/wheel. Just want to learn a little faster. I like to know my beast.

Status: offline 		Learn how movement works, combat delay, terrain bonuses, conducting attacks and setting up the supply network (depots, unit priorities etc)

Can neglect for now: Air war, production, TOEs etc.

I'd seriously suggest play the Velikie Luki learning tutorial following the steps in Ch 4 of the manual. That will get you used to some core game concepts/routines and elements of the UI - and probably save some frustration a bit later.

Keep the 1 page guides to hand, they are invaluable as quick glance 'how to' resource.

Read the player's notes in the manual, that may help orientate you to the big bits of the game design and some really important concepts like administrative movement and combat preparation pts

Status: offline 		Take Operation Typhoon for a spin, play both sides. See if you can recreate my OT encirclement I posted in the AAR thread. You can leave the AI Air for OT while learning.

Like you I jump head first and see how things work then if I have to read the manual I do so. I never play any of the scenarios since they may or may not be relevant to the Grand Campaign. I am not advocating you do that but you do have 30 years of gaming experience which will go a long way.

Important things = knowing how to attack, with how much, where and when during the turn if Germans in 41. Soviets in 41 knowing how to defend. There is a right way to defend and a "not" so right way to defend.

Can be neglected = Skip the Air part of the game until you are comfortable with the ground war. You can actually play the whole game and never use the air :- ) I would not advise it but you can. I know I can play all of 41 as Germany without Air and still make great gains.

Status: offline 		From HILYA's past posts I would say that he is referring more about where and when to defend and attack. He does not advocate running away but sacrificing when necessary to slow down the Axis advance on critical paths that lead to the 41 objectives. No free lunches.
