Happy new year all.

Recently I experienced a dramatic epic fail on maritime ASuW strike. I just want to share this with you and get the opinion on what cause the failure.

This is a match in PBEM tournament. First of all, IKE is a marvelous concept, it brings the wonderful CMO game into a new level. I really enjoy the tournament.

Here is what happened.
on 0040z, the beginning of my turn, I have detected my opponent's CVBG's position. I have total 10 A-6 in 5 groups that is about 300nm away. I sent them to three different rendezvous zones (support missions, about 100nm away from CVBG). At the same time I sent out a F-14 with IR pod to identify the Carrier. The F-14 successfully finished his job before been shot down.

Here is my opponents' fleet group's screenshot.

Now it's 0059z. The end of my turn. The A-6s almost get into the RPs. My plan is simple, use a strike mission target the CV only. coordinate their course so they can launch Harpoon situationally. Total 40 Harpoon (4x10 A-6) + 8 TASM should be able saturate the CVBG's air defense

Here is the strike plan

the outside circle is 60nm away from CV. inner circle is to mark 50nm from the CV. I requested a weapon release at 50nm away due the concern of Jamming (AGM-84C has a range of 65nm). Under the heavy jamming the target's position could be jumpy, that will cause the Harpoons change their heading. They could run out of fuel before reach the target

Below is the maritime ASuW strike screen

I double checked everything before I send my turn to my opponent. Fuel/Weapon RTB and refuel have been disabled. WRA changed to target CV target with all Harpoon at 50nm away. I also checked all five groups A-6s Waypoint to make sure they will keep the height at 12000ft .

sounds like a great plan, isn't it? The problem?

My opponent sent his turn back, I was shocking to find out none of the harpoon has been fired. Most of my A-6 have been destroyed at range of less than 30nm away (see the A/C loss mark below).

The target command of the two surviving A-6. Looks like it meets every weapon release condition, but they just refuse to fire.

Any thoughts on why?

If I have another chance to carry out a similar strike mission, I am wondering if a ASuW Patrol Zone mission could be a better choice?

And to all the players participate in PBEM tournament, since you cannot pause the game and manually issue strike order, you have to plan the strike, how do you carry out your naval strike?

Did you declare those contacts hostile? Looking at the before screenshot they're yellow.

There could be a number of things going on. Can you supply the save. There are just too many variables involved to get any kind of definitive answer.

As a test, I set up a four-ship flight of A-6s attacking a USN CVN by itself. Used a ASuW strike mission and all 16 harpoons launched between 55 and 60 nm. I left the WRA as vanilla. As I said, there are a lot of variables.

A couple of thoughts, I've not played in IKE so not sure how the time gap might impact play:

-As BDukes says - are the targets hostile? The mission is set to trigger on 'Unknown' but I suspect you are on 'Weapons Tight' which will overrule that and only engage hostile targets
-Those are good sized ambiguity zones in the first screen clip, that may have something to do with it
-40 Harpoons is no where near enough to penetrate a US CVBG defense if they are alert to your presence. The Joey D alone has 40x SM-2ER RIM-67 Standard Missiles with a range out to 100nm, added to the jamming and at least one other CG plus short range and CIWS & decoys. You need a lot of luck and a lot of jamming of your own, plus other distractions to get those through. The TASM as so slow they cold be picked off with Sea Sparrow easily. (even if all fired)
-If he had any Cats of his own up you would be in real trouble

This will take two or even three strikes of this size assuming that all missiles fire and most AC RTB

The CVA is flagged as hostile and the strike was on it I suppose. But yes, uncertainty zone is large in the first screenshot. This might explain.

Other possibility, maybe, is that the RIMS started to shoot and if auto-evasion was ON then the aircrafts tried to escape before shooting their harpoons (and most of them were shot down) ?

It's generally a good idea to set auto-evasion to off for strike aircraft (at the very least for the strike section of their flightplan).

Agreed. I think this likely had some impact too.

Assume if you're trading files there is a before somewhere right
