This match is my first real try (PBEM) at this game, I played only twice against AI more than 5 years ago so expect lots of mistakes, on the other hand I have a good bunch of WITE PBEM (lately wite2) and I expect that helping me avoid total disaster.

Will publish entries with considerable delay to avoid showing too many of my mistakes to my opponent, and probably in packs…as WITW from german perspective is mostly a reactive affair and in some turns there is not so much to say.

I forgot to take screenshots in T2 (or Operation mincemeat mistakes me and I have a bunch of greece photos) , Initial landings according to “historic” husky with Americans putting feet on Gela and British at Siracusa, HG Pz and 15thPzGren tried a -futile- counter attack at Siracusa, and then mount a line at Catania (as can be seen in T3 initial screenshot).

Turn 3

Mediterranean Theater of Operations (MTO):

Sicilia Situation first to show T2 end german positions
Allied air activity is almost completely within the island, full recon and some interdiction and airfield attacks.

As air losses seem quite low on my side, and I suspect Italian air is not going to last for very long I decide to stay supporting my troops, and will try to hold on the island for as long as elite German forces are not heavily compromised and there is no enemy beachhead on the peninsula. I try to form a perimeter around messina, while Xii Italian corps will try to slow any advance to Palermo

In the Italian mainland I tried to cover most “natural” landing sites anzio, naples , salerno , lauria (the “neck” of calabria) and Reggio calabria (the “boot point”) , puglia (boots heel) I set some panzers for counterattack.

European Theatre of Operations (ETO)

Enemy strategic bombers are coming in really heavy numbers against Hamburg Bremen and Kiel , Uboat pens (and the VP) are their main target. British bombers come visiting at nights while theyr US counterparts of 8th AF enjoy the day views.

I retire most planes from france air bases on reach from england based fighters to avoid exchanges with the escorts

Turn 4

ETO,

heavy bombing goes on, I reposition some more fighters to no immediate visible result

MTO
British press north along sicily´s oriental shores towards Messina, and are stopped by Hubbe´s XIV Pz Corps on Etna´s skirts. Us Forces reach North coast splitting the island on two, on the south coast shyly advances in west direction

final T4 defense dispositions

T5 and T6

As reserves rode to Italy some mistaken orders created a heavy political problem in high instances: I fumbled at garrisons (misunderstood cities garrisons) and devoid Avignon of the parked PZDiv, making a huge 80VP gift to the allies.

ETO

Heavy bombing campaign goes on

MTO

US forces on the north coast turn east against Messina, and the German perimeter stands. Palermo area is unmolested and the south coast west advances are reduced to a crawl.

Air activity is fully concentrated in the land battle area.

T7 and T8

ETO

Bombing comes to a halt (I suspect of heavy fatigue as flak and air combat seemed not doing much impression on the enemy)
, only a lonely raid against Fuel factories in Dortmund (Time to put them on priority repairs as I did with the U-boat sites.) and FB activity over holland

MTO

After two weeks of combat fearing a rupture or airlanding would isolate german motorized forces I decided for an evacuation on two steps of east sicily, first I will hold only Messina city and then left it to italian remnants. Unfortunately for me last week, combat left 15 Panzergrenadier quite low on fuel and unable to reach the port, so I had to establish a wide perimeter on the city while leaving some Italian forces screening the US advances.

Fortunately the perimeter was not attacked, and German forces retreated unmolested this week across the straits. 6th Alpini Italian division, having retreated in quite a strange direction, made a probe advance against Catania, who failed by lack of movement ability at the city doorstep.

When Messina is entered by British forces and the knot closes around Palermo. Heavy air activity hits south calabria for the first time

Preparing for the next phase.

If the recon and air patrol pattern is to be trusted my opponent seems to be methodical and not prone to amphibious “jumps”, even so I somewhat prepare against surprises on rome and anzio areas, and devoted five regiments to try maintaining corsica under axis control (do not want give him that giant carrier for free)
