Greetings all,

I realize that the closure of the OP things to ponder thread is unpopular. I wanted in the spirit of full transparency to make clear the full reasoning as to why it was closed. I am going to remove all the other threads to keep the forums tidy.

Firstly, the post that lead to that thread being reviewed and closed was this one (I would honestly call this NSFW as well, just to warn in advance):
NSFW Picture

Note: the SFW version of "post image", a free image hosting website, automatically moved this to the NSFW version of "post image". Kind of proving my point, this may mean you see adult adverts if you click the above link.

It was posted obviously not because we had a florishing discussion on botany, but because it quite frankly looks like female genitalia. This post was reported and I absolutely agree with the report that it was inappropriate. No, I don't think the fact it is a plant excuses it, context matters and the topic very much was about women.

Further review of the thread, found many other posts that either objectified, sexualized or otherwise similar to the type of content that was deemed inappropriate in the american beauties thread. Maybe not strictly rule breaking, but in the same sort of nudge nudge wink wink vein.

I hope everyone will understand and respect why this thread had to close and why moderation action had to be taken on the following arguements.

I will, under no pressure from anyone (the rest of the team is in the UK and sleeping right now), remove the time-outs that some people got for repeatly bringing up the policy discussion, after I had asked for the topic to be dropped or moved to PM.

I will do so in the morning once everyone has had some time to cool off and come back with a fresh head.

I want to make this very clear, this kind of post is not acceptable and the threads that encourage it are not acceptable either. You are more than welcome to PM me on this subject, if you wish. In the future, we will close and delete these types of posts and people will get warnings or timeouts for making them.

As I said previously, I don't want to be the bad guy here, but we must draw the line somewhere.

Regards,
Edmon

Sorry, but that's milkweed. I grow milkweed for monarchs. I take in monarch chrysalises and release the butterflies that emerge. I do discuss nature stuff a lot, though it has little to do with wargaming. Does this remind you of anything? (Sorry, I should have warned everyone, hope it's doesn't give anyone a fright). It's meant to. Hope I'm not objectifying funny faces.

Maybe give being a locker bee a break for a while. Reminds me of the attitude of some police officers. Escalate, escalate, escalate. Never lose an encounter. Never walk away. Physically put the subject down, humiliate.
If that doesn't work maybe ratchet up the violence.

You posted that image, in a collection of pictures of women, because you fully understood that it looks like a vagina.

You did not post it in a collection of pictures of plants along with your thesis on plant development, horiculture or similar. Which, we should be an extremely odd choice of topic for a forum that is supposed to be about WitP, anyway. Even then, I doubt anyone who loves plants would choose that specific picture, at that specific angle, because of just how obviously it looks like a vagina.

And would they say "does it remind you of anything?" of course not.

Because it very obviously does. And it's not approprate here.

It was an orchid, that's what they look like. Yeah, that one was pretty extreme so I get it.
Don't go to an orchid show.
Couldn't the pics found to have been offending clipped or those posts removed rather than shutting down the thread?
(Meant to reply to Edmond rather than Geoff.)
C'est la vie, be back to see how things are here in '23.

Yes, typically we would remove the offending posts and did so. However, there were plenty of other posts in a similar vein, the above was just the worst example. Which is why we invite the community to start a new thread if they so wish and closed the old one.

Post image, a free image hosting website, automatically moved the above image from their SFW hosting to their adult hosting. Meaning that their technology that scans images automatically identified it as porn.

I am going to close this thread for now, I may reopen it later, when I have more free time to answer your questions.

I ask everyone, to respect the decision to close the thread mentioned above and to not make any further threads on this topic at this time.

You are more than welcome to PM me or another moderator if you have further comment or need further clarification.

Hi everyone,

I just logged in to check this forum for the first time today and am just seeing everything that has transpired.

I've read through the various posts. I'll also reach out to Edmon on Monday to get me fully up to speed.

In the interim, I am going to undelete the deleted threads though, as it is moderation practice here that problematic threads are locked, but not deleted so that they remain as a reference of what was said or done.

Also, a quick reminder to everyone that civil discussion is expected and required here. You can debate a moderator's decision (PMs or e-mails are preferred there) but you have to keep it polite and within the forum rules.

Regards,

- Erik
