22-25 Jun 42 Highlights – Manila continues to hold, but the end is near. Jpn ships sunk: TK: 1 (medium) Allied ships sunk: DD: 1 (Buchanan) TK: 1 (old-large) xAKL: 2 Air loss: Jpn: 41 Allied: 38 Subwar: Jpn: 4 Attacks, 2 ship hit (DD sunk, xAK dam) Allies: 5 Attacks, 2 ship hit (TK sunk, DD dam) Jpn Amph Inv: None Allied Amph: None Bases lost: None Bases seized: None SIGINT/Intel: NSTR. Japan/Industry: Nakajima Ha-45 Engine R&D accelerated to 4/43. Aichi Ha-60 Engine R&D accelerated to 7/42. Mitsubishi Ha-43 Engine R&D accelerated to 6/45. A6M5 Zero R&D accelerated to 7/42; that allows me to shift 4 R&D factories to start researching the A6M5c and 3 to start researching the A6M5b. The remaining A6M5 factory is increased from 30 to 50, and will start producing in 1 July. I’ve also swapped 1 of 2 Ki-43-IIa Oscar research factories to the Ki-43-IIb for a total of 8 working the K-43-IIb. The remaining Ki-43-IIa factory is at 90% to 7/42, so should start producing 1 Jul. The challenge remains keeping the Ha-35 Engine pool over 500 for the engine bonus – I’ve got three factories churning these out, and expanding each turn. That may not be enough, and I may have to shut some a/c production down temporarily to keep the bonus once the Zero and Oscar lines hit 7/42. Lastly, CV Shokaku completes her refit and will depart Yokohama with Yamato next turn to join the Fleet. Kuriles/Aleutians/North Pacific: NSTR. Central Pacific: NSTR. South Pacific: Allied DD TF (4DD, 2DMS) bombarded Horn Is doing very little damage – and fortunately prior to the arrival of the escort TF from Moresby with the crippled DD Tanikaze and a heavily damaged xAP. In daylight, P-40s then sweep Horn Island and are bested by a dozen Zeros on CAP; 5 P-40s shot down to 4 Zeros, but 11 P-40s also reportedly lost to Ops. The second turn, the roles are reversed, 9 Zeros lost to 8 P-40s in air to air, but 6 Zeros to only 2 P-40s to Ops. Will continue to fly CAP over Horn, but the Allies certainly have the numbers to wear down the CAP. On the New Caledonia side, a US DD TF (4DD) bombarded Koumac with no effect, but did spot part of the B/14ID Bde there – which isn’t bad as its actually moving to defend LaFoa. The last of the B/14 IN finished offloading and the TF will depart for Rabaul next turn from Noumea – which was also mined by CM Okishima. Noumea AF is repaired from the B-17 strikes to operate a/c, and a Chutai of Zeros and Nicks are flown in. Lastly, KB arrives at Nauru Is and takes on fuel, ready to sortie. Hopefully will have a chance to stay put for a while though – a number of supply runs are needed to both New Caledonia and Luganville – as well as build up some type of defenses on the smaller islands in the area. Tulagi is being established as an intermediary base to support these efforts, but the question is whether or not the Allies will allow them unimpeded. DEI/SW Pacific: CVE Taiyo arrived at Soerabaja from Rabaul. She’ll refuel and sail on an anti convoy sortie in the IO next turn. What looks like an Allied cruiser TF is spotted heading north toward Exmouth, which I’m sure is a target for bombardment – hopefully, a sub can get lucky or the Bettys at Broome will sortie. PI: Two more attacks go in against Manila, and while defenders still hold, the casualties are finally swinging in the IJA’s favor, so the end is close. After two attacks, 4500 IJA lost to about the same Allied. Will need to rest again before making the final push. Burma/IO: Allies begin moving on Akyab on the ground from Cox’s Bazaar, and the small Thai garrison starts to pull out to join the 33 ID deployed along the river defense line. Not much behind the 33 ID at the moment; Imperial Gd Div was swapped from the right flank to the left as 55th ID is still spread out, waiting for the 144th IN Reg, which just arrived in Rangoon. Supplies shortage in Burma is the biggest issue as more troops are inbound. Lastly, two oil laden TKs in convoy are bushwacked by two subs – the first crippling one TK, then sinking it once it detached with a PB in escort. Then the other sub picked off the DD escorting the remaining TK, which of course was detached with the remaining PB as escort – LEAVING the tanker without any escort!!! Argh!! She’ll attempt to join convoy that dropped off the 144 IN Reg heading south. China: NSTR.
