Is it just me, or has the AI gotten a lot better over the last year? I usually play Soviets against the German AI on Hard, and it seems much harder this time. The AI was usually quite conservative on the offensive, sticking close to supply sources, steamroller attacks (which work on Hard), and only taking encirclements when they were obvious.

My latest game (first in a year+) I'm seeing:

- the AI going for much deeper penetrations, seemingly unconcerned about the railhead being far away
- throwing hooking attacks rendering defensive lines useless
- breaking down into regiments for easy attacks
- exploiting weakness around Chernigov and the marshes to push through and turn the defences of Kiev

I'm seriously concerned I might have to step down to Challenging. This is a bit distressing as I was able to beat Impossible back in the early days of WITE. Kudos to the AI developers if this is not just old age creeping up on me.

I was checking how Axis AI behaves in Road to Leningrad (AI at 100%) and I have totally opposite experience. 2-3 hasty attacks vs well protected defenders and only then deliberate one. As a result to the end of scenario I had multiple guard divisions as AI gives free wins with their hasty attacks.
Examples:

Maybe it is better in GC.

As for the Soviet AI it was way to passive in GC. Except of a winter offensive - there was only 1 attack. Even when edges of a pocket are hold with 1-2 regiments with a CV of 2-3. I checked some videos on youtube (that people are still playing v1.0) and Soviet AI was way more aggressive. I have no idea what happened in my game.

The AI at Normal (100%) is going to eventually become too easy for experienced players, especially if you ask it to Attack. We've said from the start that for the AI to attack, it's best to put it on Challenging or above especially when the human player knows the ins and outs of the game. You can also customize your own difficulty level if you prefer to give it some advantages but not others, but it will need some help against a good player on the defensive side (if you want a challenging game).

Also, the scenario AIs are different from the GC AIs in some respects.

I can confirm the AI is harder than WITE. To have roughly the same results against it, I have to play about a level down from where I did in WITE as well.

My thread in tech support is about way too many hasty attacks without a reason. I don't think changing AI settings will change that. Joel was asking for a saves and I added them. Hopefully AI behavior will be revisited. It would be better if it performs deliberate attacks most of the time, or even all of the time, as Soviets are doing during a winter.

Restarted with a more of a runaway strategy (at least as far as the Dnieper) and doing somewhat better. I think it's the increased use of regimental breakdowns which is making '41 much more difficult for the Soviets - the Germans rarely require a full division to shift the average Russian unit, and it pays off in terms of more secure breakthroughs. The question is, will the AI recognise that regimental breakdowns are not wise come late '42, when Tank Corps are prowling for easy wins? We shall see.

The GC AI seems the best, the scenario AI may need some work. I love Road to Leningrad, but I'm yet to see the German AI (on 100%, Fog of War) get far beyond Pskov, let alone to Leningrad.

If you want the AI to attack well, you really need it to be on Challenging or above.
