wow... one of those things why I never understood the results of ground combat in this game... enemy being cut off here for months, no supply and still able to wreck my attacking units that are fully supplied, sitting at their base, no disruption or fatigue...

That's a head-scratcher all right. Why is the allied AV being reduced to about a quarter of its theoretical strength? There are no modifiers listed. Does the game engine somehow think you have prepped the units for somewhere else?

In my game Ambon shows JR terrain - a 3X defensive bonus, I believe. Add a bad die roll to that and anything can happen.

The adjusted av doesn't concern me as that is only needed to take/hold a base but the losses do even though most are disablements. It's just crazy what cut off units can do time again and again.

the enemy bombards and we get intel on what is defending the base... inanse number of different units, looks like Rabaul was meant to act as a staging base to reinforce the surrounding bases but my offensive into the Bismarck Sea has put an end to this, otherwhise I can't explain this troop composition... while the enemy still has 50% of our assault value he clearly lacks heavy weapons and tanks... with the firepower we brought I'm absolutely positive to end this soon...

while our carrier force was covering the invasion at Rabaul we had Catalinas pick up a big enemy convoy which is heading towards Truk... I'm feeling confident enough to send the carriers North on a hunt, we will have some heavy naval units in close cover for the invasion but I doubt the enemy has any capabilities to intervene and he hasn't spotted my carriers so he has to expect them to be close to the invasion... the enemy convoy should be in perfect strike range if everything moves as expected...

there are these days when everything really goes as planned... not having spotted the exact position of my carriers the enemy convoy kept moving East towards Truk and we end up in 1000lb bomb range... the SBDs sink a lot enemy freighters, guess this must have been a big supply convoy bound for Truk...

Wow! Great carrier strikes! Your pilots got lots of cheap experience on those. Do you know if the carrier crews get experience boosts from conducting these ops?

As Canoerebel put it, carriers are not the best weapon in the game - good intel is. You had it, he didn't.

And as for firepower at Rabaul, your naval bombardments have knocked out a lot of guns. So have your LCU counter-bombardments. All good for the Allies.

Experience and skill buildup was literally nil, a point exp here, a point nav bomb there. As all the bomber crews are at 70 skill they hardly increase skill or exp levels, they would need non stop bombing to do so, like Army bombers often do with their 24/7 attacks. As the IJ player I usuall have hundreds of IJAAF bomber crews with exp 80+ and grd skill as well.

it's a one... two... BOOOM day... as Moulmein's airfield never showed damage from the attacks I decided to end those today and flew in three USAAF fighter squadrons... all put to 90% CAP I have no clue why all three only show 13 fighters on CAP which is 50%... oh well, being better positioned than the enemy our fighters completely trash the incoming strikes, creating several more aces for literally no losses as not a single USAAF pilot was lost today...

Chinese units fire intel shells into Liuchow showing only 721 enemy av... it's a clear hex and I don't expect to see fort levels higher than 3 or 4 so combined with the air attacks and fully prepped Chinese Corps I have no doubt our first real offensive in China should become a full success... Liuchow is an important base as it opens the railline from Tuyun all the way to Changsha again so the Chinese can quickly move units around... holding the base against a massed IJA effort is as impossible as it is now for the Japanese though...

horrible air losses for the Japanese today... the attacks against Moulmein served no obvious purpose to me and in the end it costs the IJAAF a lot of bombers...

several dozen of these naval bombardments in the past have really hurt Japanese support units at Rabaul but they still have so many flak guns that bombing the base from below 20,000ft is like suizide and doesn't make sense considering Allied aircraft replacement rates where I seem to know each bomber personally...

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

Excellent! I was sure the Chinese will take the base but I didn't expect it to happen with the first attack... 100% prepped for Liuchow surely paid off as we get a great adjusted av and our continued ground attacks with all available bombers in the theatre kept the enemy's adjusted av pretty much equal to the base av... we suffer quite a number of disabled squads but these are spread over a lot of the attacking units and the enemy really takes a beating due to the forced retreat...

that's an IJA div plus two regiments badly hit, we are trying to pursue them now as they retreated West across the river towards Nanning...

What did you expect from 90% CAP setting? Obviously the aircraft can't be up in the air all day and 10% not assigned is not enough to sustain 90% airborne. So when the enemy raid is detected, the numbers depend on how many have already landed, how many have been refueled and are ready to go up again, and how long it takes to get to the intercept altitude and distance. The numbers showing in your first intercept look pretty decent to me.

On average you probably get 75%+ on CAP if the setting is 90%.

It was strange to see exactly 13 from each of the three squadrons, compare this to any other air combat.

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

Chinese troops attack again near Liuchow as they shock attack across the river in pursuit of the Japanese forcing them to retreat once more while suffering heavy losses... the pincer attack on Liuchow was a full success and the shattered Japanese units are now retreating South East towards Canton, we are not trying to pursue them as the goal was to secure the railhub of Liuchow and cause a good amount of damage to the Japanese that's what we did... while the Chinese suffered hundreds of disabled combat squads the actual losses were minimal...

That Rabaul garrison was a huge pile of Naval support and AA guns....but a real lack of actual combat troops. Just a bunch of Nav Guards, which are not troops for sustained combat of any kind. Not a single tank or artillery piece larger than a mortar...

Yeah, completely inadequate to defend that important base. As I've said, I guess these units were meant to be spread out from Rabaul into nearby bases but that never happened due to my offensive and Port Moresby being built up way faster than Rabaul. I was pretty sure the prepped units that are tasked for will be overkill but then I also expected at least one IJA div in the stack and more heavy weapons. I guessed around 1200 enemy av at the base, proved to be way less. Besides what I have landed I have more being prepped for Rabaul, some 3000 av in total.

You sank all the shipping he was bringing to the area to move those troops. No wonder the Japanese expansion suddenly jerked to a stop.

airfield complex at Manado launches twin tailed devils to probe the air defenses over Mindanao which is the next target for our ground offensive... again having caught Nates on CAP at this stage of the war makes me both speechless and shaking my head... IIRC I was even asking wth there are Nates airborne and was told that Tojo production would be fully running and squadrons are awaiting those but that still doesn't justify having Nates on CAP IMO...

Tojos and Zeroes that showed up in the replay must have been on training but weren't caught...

not spectacular losses on either side but today's attacks mean we have already achieved full air superiority over Mindanao which is only very lightly defended according to recon... next stack of enemy ground units seems to be on Luzon, every base within 4E range seems to have been evacuated... soon our troops can march to Tokyo...
