So, I've been thinking about what kind of CPU does the best with this game. Does it demand single-thread performance over multi-thread? How much will many cores benefit performance? Is there a point at which the game prefers single-thread performance over the number of threads? Also, does the game like RAM speed / bandwidth? Does disk latency a major factor (ie, constant talking to the DB on disk)?

I think the answer on most of questions are obvious. Faster is better. Less latency is better. Number of threads is better. As to more threads, it seems to use all threads. I have a 10 core i9 running at 5GHz and it runs VERY much faster than my i7-1065G7. I had an older i9 running at 4.7GHz with 8 cores last year. It ran 3-5% slower than the newer i9.

So CMO will take advantage of more cores, but I suspect raw speed is a slightly bigger factor. Its still a 32 bit app though, so you don't have to go crazy with RAM.

Was there a noticeable improvement in CMO when stepping up to the new CPU?

Yes. I have run it on i9s, i7s, i5s, i3s, and multiples of each. I use a modded Op Brass drum as the benchmark I have used since release in 2013. Every step up in CPU and cores has shown 3-10% improvements running OBD at fastest compression.

Here's the premise I'm running with. The game can be divided into two parts:
1. 2D rendering of the Earth, updating text displays, drawing special effects, etc and so on.
2. Math engine to make everything work.
It seems to me -- maybe incorrectly -- that most of the performance of the game is sunk into the math engine. There's a large database from which variables have to be taken and fed into math equations. As there is a very large amount of individual queries to the database going on, I would think the performance impact comes from the game waiting for the database to be fetched. So in my view, theoretically, shouldn't performance be increased greatly if the database was put into something with low latency, premium storage? For example those new Optane storage units. And what about RAM? Does the game fit the database into it's limited 32-bit space (4 GB?) so disk fetching isn't a major element? Does it really come down to the CPU's math performance?

You might be over-analyzing it a little. GPU makes only a minor difference without Tacview. Once Tacview comes into the picture, GPU can make quite a bit of difference. Fast RAM helps a little, but not a huge amount. I upgraded to 3200 and saw only minor improvements. Amount above 8Gb of RAM makes little difference except if you are running Tacview and other larger apps. Faster CPU with more cores makes the most difference. The balance between cores and speed should lean a little towards raw speed. A fast SSD makes a difference in start up, accessing the database, and in changing map position/zoom. This is especially true if you load a lot of layers on.

I'll come back to one point...if you use Tacview a lot, all bets are off. GPU will make a difference and a fast CPU is very much needed depending on scenario and what you are doing. Using your GPU control panel to optimize Tacview is important.

The short of it is if you only play CMO without Tacview or any other graphically intensive apps, push you cost to CPU fast with as many cores as you can, then SSD, then fast RAM, then GPU.

You're probably right. Worrying about per-thread performance vs number of threads is me running around a fruitless circle. I wonder if getting an Alder Lake and overclocking it to 5+ GHz would be a decent upgrade from my current 3950X. Early-adopting DDR5 is tempting but I wonder how much actual performance I'd realize out of that upgrade.

Keep in mind that its just benchmarking. If you are just playing regular scenarios at no more that 5x speed, a mid-range system will perform about as well as any top of the line system. Its when you get into massive scenarios and fastest time compression that you'll see some moderate differences. But the mid-range system will still run it.

I buy my systems for other things than CMO. But it does help the benchmark.

I cant make any comparisons but if you have a scenario you want bench marking I'm currently running a Ryzen 9 5950X 16 core 32 threads and NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti.

Does seem to be using all 32 CPUs
