One of the really great things about the way this game is set up is that it supports the use of alternate unit bases within a specific nationality for particular kinds of units. Its good to see the NVA and the VC are clearly differentiated and also that the US Marines and US Army have different bases, as well as that the various classes of South Vietnamese units, ARVN, Rangers, CIDG, RuffBuffs and Mike Force etc. stand out on the map with their own bases. However while the same thing has also been done for the French (Marines, Paras , Foreign Legion Paras etc.) it appears only to extend to the relevant infantry platoons and not the other heavy weapons sections, leaders and HQ’s etc. that would be found in a battalion of that particular type of unit. I first noticed this when opening the “From the Sky” – Battle of Glong Dinh scenario where within the paratrooper companies the rifle platoons have the dedicated para bases whereas their leaders 60mm mortars and MG units have the default French one, which looks a bit odd. I quite understand that had all the necessary duplicate platoon units been set up in the game that the massive amount of extra work required would have delayed its release even further and for similar reasons I am not suggesting that they be added later. However perhaps consideration could be given to releasing a small mod with the next update, that is operated in JSGME that gives players the option to give all French units regardless of type the standard default alternate base. I guess you will probably need to do the same for the UK in CSME as I noticed the same sort of issue in the “45 Commando” Campaign when a mod showing a range of different unit bases is applied to that game using JSGME. Down the line with multiple base options by the look of it now becoming standard for most nations in CS games you might want to set things up in the editor so that when you left click on a unit or organization in the editor there, below the option to “Lower Unit in Organization” you get another option to “Set unit base”. Then, if you clicked on it again you would get something very like the “Morale Dialog” that you get for “Change Morale of Unit or Organization” with the numbers starting on the left with 1 (the default option) and running up to 12, (the current limit from the look of it) or more if you want to increase things, and with unused choices in that set of base files greyed out. Each numbered radial button would correspond to the relative position of the particular “bases set” in the set of 4 “Bases” files for that nation. My guess is that if adopted that approach would also save time in getting content out the door in the long run, as it would reduce the number of graphics files the you would need to create for new factions, particularly smaller ones. Kind regards Ian
