Hey, does anyone know what happens to pilots after a CV sinks? Are they rescued and put back in the pool? Or just lost?....GP

I’ve noticed if you buy the air group back, the pilots seem to come back with the unit.
If you don’t buy the unit back I think the pilots stay on leave in the ether somewhere.
I didn’t take a screenshot of the pilot list before and after losing the unit, but when I saw the experience and skills of the returned pilots they look like the originals.

If your CV is damaged and it might sink, then pull off the pilots. You can always return them. Most of the aircraft that ditch, the pilots are saved but it might take some time for them to return to the pool since they are so waterlogged!

I think that when a group gets run over on the ground, that some if not all of the pilots of the aircraft that don't escape come back about two weeks later . . .

If you can put a pilot into Tracom, then you might be able to pull the other pilots off if the number of pilots is less than the number of aircraft. You can also try removing any flying leader to do this as well.

What does the pilot kia,Kia,, Mia show for the turn the carrier is lost. That should decide how many are lost and the rest return to the pool

Can you use the “send 10 pilots to” button to send them to general reserve?
I’ve used that before to move the pilots but leave the aircraft behind.

Shouldn't that be "So the CV sank . . . ?"

If that is true, it would be worth it to buy back destroyed airgroups purely to get a cadre of awesome pilots back

IRL, "Shattered Sword" went into this a bit, in that the Japanese were able to save alot of pilots at Midway despite the sunk ships. Many were rescued. There was a huge loss of trained air mechanics and techs though (and that shortage lasted the entire war)

This got me wondering so I've carried out a test using Coral Sea and two carriers, Shokaku and Yorktown. All Aircraft were stood down except for Shokaku's Zeros and Vals. Yorktown was sent north so it was 22 Hexes from nearest base (beyond devastor max range of 20 hexes), Shokaku positioned four hexes away.

Yorktown initially had 4 groups VF(19 a/c), VS (18), VB(18) and VT-5(12) all with pilots and no reserves. VS was transferred to base the other three all stood down leaving 19 fighter and 30 bomber pilots. Bear in mind group leader were also pilots.

On Turn 7 Japan attacked causing 34 sys/11 Flood damage plus 6 eng and 2 fires. All group could still fly (<50 total damage) and all aircraft could transfer except the VT, out of range. . No US a/c were damaged in anyway so no pilots were lost. All pilots could be sent to the reserve/tracom except leaders.

Turn 8 another attack with 63 sys/26 Flood plus 17 eng and 1 fires. No groups could fly (>50 damage) including transfers. No a/c or pilots were lost.

Turn 9 Yorktown sunk. All groups and a/c were lost. Pilots on the ship at that time were randomly either MIA, WIA or KIA and placed in the reserve were appropriate. I assume, the leaders were sent to the leader list but as it was a scenario I could not tell. For the same reason I could not buy back the groups but as the pilots were in the reserve list I'm making the assumption there get a fresh group of pilots.

I think that there might also be a delay, something like two weeks . . .

Yorktown had at the time of sinking 28 pilots +(2 leaders) in the combined VB and VT groups. The top pilot list shows 7 MIA 3 WIA and 12 KIA. The reserve pool is shown below with 18 pilots. The numbers don't quite add up so I expect som fog of war stuff happening.

Tracker shows 6 MIA, 12 WIA, 6 OK agreeing with the reserve list above. Checked the tacker leader list and neither of the leaders are there.

So for the most part it seems that you don't lose most pilots. I will find out soon if they get reassign to the rebuild squadrons....GP
