What function does the commander really perform? if you join troops it maintains more morale etc?

The commander will maintain improve or maintain the morale of the platoons under its command in the same hex.

The commander will provide a firepower adjustment to a platoon or platoons when it is selected and fired with that unit (by the value of its command rating)

The commander, when stacked with its Headquarters, will increase the supply range of the headquarters by the command value.
