In terms of game mechanics, what is the definition of an armistice? What are the effects on units, on control over territory, on mobilization and alignment of an armistice? How does an armistice differ from a surrender?

The country reverts to a neutral status, unoccupied by enemy forces, and either retaining or losing its units depending on the setting chosen in the script.

I'd suggest mocking up a small test campaign to see this and some of the other things you've mentioned in action, just so you can see everything as it happens.
