The P-39D saw its first combat today when I slipped a squadron into Clark to punish Wirraway's bombers.

Musings

I no longer think Wirraway is going for a push in the South or Central Pacific. He is doing his best to convince me that he will invade Fiji through SIGINGT trickery (by ordering his troop convoys to head towards Suva) but I am not falling for this sleight of hand. I am much more interested in tracking his carriers which will give me the real Japanese objective that lies beyond his land based aviation. The KB looks to be pulling west through the Torres Strait after supporting the unloading of Japanese troops in New Guinea, and the remaining carriers look to be gathering in the western Java Sea.

It is possible that Wirraway may go for an invasion of India with the KB's support but I doubt it. It looks like he is determined to reduce Port Moresby and that will require at least several divisions. Three of his divisions also took some considerable damage during their landing in Burma. That doesn't leave enough forces for a very serious push into India with the exception of a more limited operation around Chittagong. This leaves me thinking that he may either go for a landing on Ceylon or possibly Western Australia. Furthermore, I definitely think he will invade Northern Australia but that's not surprising.

For my part I am eagerly waiting for the amphibious bonus to end and am planning for some early albeit risky counterattacks. I already have troops prepping for their first enemy held atoll and island objectives and I am going to put a lot of effort into trying to hold Port Moresby which will give me a nice springboard for a campaign of attrition. Having knocked out so many oil wells in the DEI and resource mines in Hokkaido, I am keen to keep up the pressure on Japan's economy. Finally, I have a couple of surprises in the cards for Wirraway, at least one of which is already in place. More on that soon...

The air war has dramatically quieted down over the past several days. I initially thought it was an issue with the weather but I don't believe that's it. Previously relentless Japanese bombing in China has completely halted, and Japanese bombing elsewhere has significantly decreased in intensity. Wirraway is very likely shifting his air forces for some new operation but I am not clear on what it could be. The Chinese are certainly not complaining though!

Rangoon fell on the 15th, I left a single battalion as a rearguard and pulled my Burmese forces deeper into the interior.

Port Moresby on the other hand is a slug fest. His battleship bombardments are a pain but I am dishing out my own tough medicine with the allied artillery.

The overall situation in the campaign remains very promising.

The KB has finally pulled away beyond the range of my naval search so I am trying to read the SIGINT tea leaves for any indication on where it is going after it refuels/rearms.

Central/South/Southwest Pacific

Suva, Canton, and Johnston, have all reached level 4 forts. Pago Pago, Midway, and the Line Islands are all at 3 and moving quickly to 4. Substantial garrisons are positioned at all these strategic positions and I am confident I will hold the line against any new Japanese adventures in the Pacific.

Port Moresby continues to valiantly fight on against the Japanese despite their frequent naval bombardments. On the 18th SS-18 heavily damaged Japanese destroyer Yayoi with a torpedo. More submarines already in the sector will attempt to hunt it down if Wirraway doesn't scuttle it.

China

I think I spoke too soon! On the 17th Wirraway hit my Chinese forces with close to 200 two engine bombers, all very heavily escorted. The Japanese are clearly sparing no effort in resourcing their operations in China. The Japanese have still not taken Sian although that will happen before the end of the month. The Chinese have fought a long and hard campaign in the northern front here against impossible odds, delaying the Imperial forces as much as possible and buying valuable time.

Unfortunately, Wenchow has finally fallen on the fourth enemy attack. I was hoping the garrison would hold on for another week but the pressure from the air and battleship bombardments was too much for the defenders.

Coral Sea

The torpedoed Japanese destroyer has most likely been scuttled. Japanese bombardment task forces have pulled back from Port Moresby for now, and Wirraway has instead brought in naval bombers to conduct anti-submarine patrols to clear the waters. No hits thus far on my subs.

China

The first little surprise for Wirraway was a B-17 raid out of China targeting the port of Takao in Formosa. Unfortunately the op largely fizzled with severe weather throwing off my bombers' aim. The op is still likely to reap wider benefits in keeping Wirraway concerned over a wide range of potential targets and hopefully spread out his fighter presence some more.

Malaya

The next surprise for Wirraway today was a counteroffensive in the Malay peninsula by the trapped British/Indian forces there. The nominally encircled troops advanced into Kuala Lumpur and threw back the Japanese garrison there:

Ground combat at Kuala Lumpur (49,79)

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 9416 troops, 72 guns, 50 vehicles, Assault Value = 386

Defending force 2071 troops, 28 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 96

Allied adjusted assault: 209

Japanese adjusted defense: 89

Allied assault odds: 2 to 1 (fort level 0)

Allied forces CAPTURE Kuala Lumpur !!!

Attacker: shock(+), supply(-)

Japanese ground losses:
1297 casualties reported
Squads: 37 destroyed, 16 disabled
Non Combat: 3 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 6 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 7 (4 destroyed, 3 disabled)
Units retreated 2

Allied ground losses:
647 casualties reported
Squads: 19 destroyed, 42 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 22 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Guns lost 3 (1 destroyed, 2 disabled)

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

Assaulting units:

3rd SSVF Battalion
11th Indian Division
223 Group RAF
109th RAF Base Force

Defending units:
41st Guard Battalion
41st Infantry Rgt /1
6th JAAF AF Coy

This is just a minor victory to be sure, but it has secured the trapped forces some extra supply and most importantly it keeps them relevant. It hopefully also forces the Japanese to devote significant resources and troops to their containment or final destruction.

DEI

A similar story is taking place in Java. After having previously defeated a Japanese infantry regiment and having stayed highly active with the doomed Dutch troops there rather than just camp out at Bandoeng, Wirraway has been pressured into devoting very considerable forces against the Dutch remnants more than a month after he first landed on Java. The Japanese 18th and 38th divisions, elements of the 2nd Division, and a tank regiment pushed back one of my infantry regiments this turn. More Japanese units are detected moving around Bandoeng. These are all forces that could be used in a very early Japanese push elsewhere on the map beyond the SRA!

China

The Chinese rearguard in the rough terrain southeast of Sian has finally been driven out. The Chinese garrison for the last (but quick) battle at Sian has been selected and is in position. The rest of the Chinese forces in the Sian theater are racing to assume their designated defensive positions to the northwest.

China

Sian was finally captured by the Japanese on the 24th of February. I left half a dozen previously shattered Chinese units as a garrison to force Wirraway to take the base by force in order to delay him some more, to hopefully damage some of the industry in the process, and to regenerate those units in Chungking. With Wenchow also taken, it is clear the Japanese are going to start advancing towards central and perhaps western China. As part of these maneuvers one of my corps caught and mauled a Japanese recon regiment advancing near Kukong.

New Guinea

Wirraway has landed more forces at Port Moresby, losing only an xAKL in the process despite the considerable number of Allied submarines and mines. SIGNIT informs me he is also bringing in large numbers of artillery and aviation support units into the theater, which suggests he is hunkering down for a long siege of the base. I am perfectly happy with this prospect.

SRA
I was surprised to discover even more enemy infantry divisions still located in Java. Maneuvering to contain my Dutch forces are the Japanese 2nd, 18th, 21st, and 33rd infantry divisions. Elements of yet another division are detected in Southern Sumatra. If you add the three divisions in Burma and the two in New Guinea, that leaves about 3-4 Japanese divisions unaccounted for. Enough for a small second phase operation, but not enough for a more ambitious push until he gets those troops out of Java.

Elsewhere in the DEI, the Japanese land on and take Balikpapan.

Using long range Catalina flights from Ceylon, I have extricated the 8th Indian Brigade from Malaya and now I a working on pulling out the 22nd Indian Brigade. This will allow me to reconstitute the 9th Indian Division. I will then decide if it is possible to also start pulling out the 11th Indian Division.

Burma

The Japanese have halted their advance and are sending large numbers of AA units into the theater. It is clear Wirraway will wait to take Magwe until he can pack it with a solid air defense. Makes perfect sense given the heavy damage caused to Palembang's oil. He desperately needs Magwe to makeup up some of that shortfall.

February 26 - March 4, 1942

Another game week has passed with very little to report, hence the dearth of AAR updates. As far as I am concerned, the lack of activity during these crucial months where the Japanese have the amphibious bonus is a good thing!

The Japanese have taken Samarinda and have been reinforcing the Port Moresby invasion with artillery. There has also been plenty of maneuvering around China following the Japanese capture of Sian and Wenchow but nothing decisive has occurred since then. It is clear Wirraway is shifting forces for a push between Changsha and Kukong. He is also attempting to strike out across the mountains towards the Ankang road from Sian. This was something I had anticipated long before Sian fell and I have Chinese corps on the move to block such a thrust and they should hopefully arrive to hold the mountain passes before the Japanese, even though the Japanese have secondary roads leading halfway into the hexes in question.

To satiate my constant cravings for offensive action, I sent in some B-17D squadrons into China to strike at Cam Rahn Bay. Damage was minimal but once again these kinds of strikes force Wirraway to either abandon the use of critical ports or allocate resources to their defense.

Developments with Russia-Ukraine are keeping me very busy at work which is making it hard to keep the AAR up to date. Here is a quick summary of where we are at:

China

Wirraway has moved his forces on to new targets. Two large Japanese armies, each supported by at least six tank regiments, are deployed in the north. One of them is trying to break through my mountain defenses south of Lanchow and the other is looking to reduce the Chinese redoubt at Tsiaotso. The massed Japanese tanks and bombers are of course very hard to defend against. As can be seen below, sometimes the all armor attacks inflict substantial casualties without sustaining any losses despite the excellent defensive terrain. Towards the south, Japanese forces appear to be heading towards Kukong.

Logistics

In the meantime, I have been busy building up my fuel and supply dumps around the map. I believe I have already accumulated decent stockpile levels and the process will only intensify going forward. Below is a summary of where things stand, with the focus now shifting to building up the Central Pacific stockpiles as well:

India: More than a million fuel and 370,000 supply
Australia: 300,000 fuel and 650,000 supply
Cape Town: 140,000 fuel and 350,000 supply
New Zealand: 130,000 fuel and 70,000 supply
Hawaii: 430,000 fuel and 100,000 supply

Overall Picture

The overall strategic picture remains positive. The long term situation in China is certainly a concern, but the Dutch garrisons in Java and Sumatra, the British in Malaysia, and the Australian force at Port Moresby have more than delivered in terms of delaying the Japanese as Wirraway focuses on eliminating these pockets. The American and Filipino forces in Luzon are also holding strong with still considerable supplies available. It's becoming increasingly unlikely that the Japanese will stage further ambitious invasions before the amphibious bonus is over, although I would be surprised if they don't land in northern Australia at some stage.

The overwhelming mass of Indian units have upgraded to Indian 42 squads and more than half of the Australian units are now at 42 squads as well. I have evacuated two Indian brigades from Malaysia via Catalina seaplanes and I am working on withdrawing at least a good chunk of the 11th Indian Division. The sheer mass of equipment and units that the Allies receive is always a great source of comfort, and I am eager to begin taking the fight to the enemy forces.

Carrier strike!

I've been restless for a while now but sometimes patience is critical. I finally got a good bite of some offensive action today when my carriers launched a concerted strike against the Medan oilfields in Sumatra. The combat report indicates I scored 39 oil hits, but recon tells me I knocked out 95 of the wells, almost half of the 200 available at Medan. The effort to erode Japan's wartime economy continues unabated.

Not too much else to report from the last week - still waiting for the next series of Japanese attacks, including the second one on Port Moresby which appears imminent. Japan's divisions are fully invested in reducing my remaining pockets in the SRA, including Malaya, so there appears to be no new significant imperial amphibious operation in the works before the amphibious bonus is over.

The Naval Battle of Port Moresby - Planning

The Japanese surface fleet has approached Port Moresby and is very likely to bombard the base this coming turn. If my previous intel is accurate, it's a very substantial fleet with 2 battleships, 8 heavy cruisers, 2 light cruisers, plus escorting destroyers. I have decided to engage this fleet with my own array of 6 heavy cruisers and 7 light cruisers plus escorting destroyers. The Allied fleet, divided into six separate task forces, will stage out of Townsville and will head at flank speed directly towards Port Moresby with patrol orders and a react setting of three hexes.

The Japanese outnumber me and have at least one Nell unit within torpedo range of the action, so I expect heavy Allied casualties. There is a chance, based on previous bombardment patterns, that the Japanese fleet will bombard during the night and get caught by my ships while it is low on ammo. If not, well, these ships are expendable in the greater scheme of things and I would have disrupted his bombardment. Plenty of allied submarines are also around to hopefully pick off any damaged enemy warships. Come what may, I a looking forward to the next turn!

The kind of bold move that will shake your opponent's confidence that he can predict what you will do. A good psychological outcome no matter who loses the most. I better go buy some popcorn!

It is just too bad that most of your Heavies don't have torpedoes, but a solid plan, will be curious if his bombardment task forces remain on station or leave.

The Naval Battle of Port Moresby

Well, turns out there was no bombardment at all! Wirraway informed me that he suspected I would rush his bombardment task forces and decided to keep them on patrol stations for another turn. This was a good move on his part, as his fully stocked fleet severely damaged my first three task forces as can be seen bellow:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Time Surface Combat, near Port Moresby at 98,130, Range 16,000 Yards

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
SOC-1 Seagull: 1 destroyed
Walrus II: 1 destroyed

Japanese Ships
CA Tone
CA Chikuma, Shell hits 3, heavy fires
CA Chokai, Shell hits 2, on fire
CA Haguro, Shell hits 2
DD Hamakaze
DD Tanikaze
DD Natsugumo
DD Yamagumo, Shell hits 2

Allied Ships
CL Leander, Shell hits 10, heavy fires
CL Achilles, Shell hits 39, and is sunk
CL Detroit, Shell hits 32, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CA Louisville, Shell hits 6, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
DD Helm, Shell hits 25, heavy fires, heavy damage
DD Mugford, Shell hits 7, heavy fires, heavy damage

These first three engagements were to the clear benefit of Japan, the Allies losing one heavy cruiser, five light cruisers, and four destroyers for little direct impact on the Japanese fleet. Nevertheless, the Japanese did take some damage and more importantly all their ships had largely exhausted their ammunition. This created an opening for the Allies to dish out their own significant damage in the next two engagements as can be seen bellow:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Time Surface Combat, near Port Moresby at 98,130, Range 20,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
CA Tone, Shell hits 3, heavy fires

Japanese aircraft losses
F1M2 Pete: 1 destroyed
E13A1 Jake: 2 destroyed

Japanese Ships
CA Tone, Shell hits 6, heavy fires, heavy damage
CA Chikuma, Shell hits 15, and is sunk
CA Chokai, Shell hits 7, heavy fires, heavy damage

DD Natsugumo, Shell hits 1
DD Yamagumo, Shell hits 3, heavy fires, heavy damage

Allied Ships
CL Phoenix
CL Honolulu
DD Patterson, Shell hits 2
DD Jarvis, Shell hits 1, on fire

During the air phase Japanese Nell bombers attempted their torpedo strikes but thankfully they all missed. Finally, the last action of the day goes to my submarines:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Port Moresby at 97,130

Japanese Ships
BB Fuso, Torpedo hits 2, on fire
DD Yukikaze

Allied Ships
SS S-28

SS S-28 launches 4 torpedoes at BB Fuso

Summary

Allied losses: 1 heavy cruiser, 5 light cruisers, and 6 destroyers sunk; 1 heavy cruiser badly damaged, 2 heavy cruisers moderately damaged. The Indianapolis is the badly damaged cruiser but I think I have a decent chance of bringing her home.
Japanese losses: 3 heavy cruisers confirmed sunk (float plane losses factored in) with another heavy cruiser almost certainly sunk, another heavy cruiser badly damaged, a battleship moderately damaged. Hard to say how many destroyers were sunk, but I estimate 4 sank or will sink.

Overall I think my ships did a very good job and I am more than happy with the balance of losses on both sides. Essentially it comes down to the fact that I can easily afford these losses while the Japanese can't. The next turn will be interesting. I have one light cruiser task force with considerable ammo still available and one Australian heavy cruiser task force that was not at all engaged now in the immediate battle area. I will see if I continue the battle over the next day and my submarines will continue to attempt to pick off some Japanese ships as well.

Certainly can't argue with the results!
Trying to understand the reason though.

There were 2 enemy task forces & 4 yours.
Why split yourself up?

If you don't, there would be one large TF of yours vs 2 smaller (relatively) of his.
- the total ammo pool is the same in both cases
- bringing all your guns & all your ammo against 1/2 of his should be better no?
- if you have all your ships in one place, the damage received is spread out more, so more of your ships keep firing back for longer, inflicting more damage (in your first battle, I bet your CL's just stopped firing back (effectively) after a certain damage threshold
- after one battle your TF can retreat home & does not have to face another fully intact TF (subject to luck & settings, of course!)
- the risk is if you get caught after the first battle, it would be bad, but the idea was to inflict maximum damage even if you lose your ships.

Maybe I am missing some sort of game mechanics?

Well done.

Another victory for the MST Tactic (multiple small taskforce).

You are becoming quite the adept at using it, especially as the Allies. Did you hang back at port specifically to engineer a daytime encounter or to prevent detection or a bit of both?

Appreciate how the care taken in staging the encounter, especially the ordering.

The Japanese actually had three big task forces (check the combat above, two cruiser and one battleship TFs) and I had six smaller ones (although one never engaged). Why go with smaller task forces? The short answer in this case is that it's because his ships are significantly stronger so the best engagement outcome I can get is when their shells and torpedoes are severely depleted. If I had sent a bigger task forces against equal numbers there would have been fewer engagements and thus none where the Japanese fleet is with very low ammo. Under different circumstances I would have gone with different strategies.

Thanks.

Yes it was for both those reasons. I was looking to ensure only daytime engagements and I was concerned about his naval search. Over the horizon flank runs are my go to....

That is what I meant. Your combined units were stronger than any one of the enemy TF's, so if you only engage one, you should have the upper hand. Wiping out any one of the 3 enemy TF's would have yielded about the same result. Of course if you then get 'reacted on' by any of the other fresh ones...

I am not sure if the fact that the game engine 'doesn't know when to stop shooting' which then results in unrealistic ammo depletion makes this MSF tactic gamey or not. (i.e. the first battle against 3 CL's) I would imagine there is a 25 pages long topic about this someplace.

No mater which, this was still brilliantly executed & it shows that you can hurt the enemy bad even without the air forces!

If we're just counting hull types, sure. But engaging Japanese heavy cruisers as the allies in 1942 is always a risky proposition, as all things being equal, they will usually come out ahead vs. allied cruisers. Wolf created a situation that maximized the chance of a positive outcome from the engagements and also was able to control which of his ships were most likely to be sunk, whereas steaming the entire force to Port Morseby could have been disastrous if long lances connected with the wrong ships.

March 20, 1941

Most of my fleet retired to the south but two task forces remained to see if they could engage the now retreating enemy. This however resulted in only a single brief engagement with a couple of Japanese destroyers to little effect. Unfortunately, the fires on Indianapolis took a turn for the worse and even with great Allied damage control I now suspect she won't make it.

There was some very good news during the night however when S-23 put another two torpedos into BB Fuso which finished her off!

Submarine attack near Port Moresby at 96,129

Japanese Ships
BB Fuso, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS S-23

BB Fuso is sighted by SS S-23
SS S-23 launches 4 torpedoes

The Japanese also launched their second attack on Port Moresby and it looks like the base will fall soon. It has already more than served its purpose however, both strategically and now with the naval battle off its shores.

Almost the end of the Japanese amphibious bonus!

China

Maneuvering, delaying and withstanding massed Japanese armored and air attacks. Lots of Japanese forces are now on the move towards Changsha and even further west to Nanning. Supply is becoming more of an issue but Chinese forces are plentiful.

SRA

Japanese forces have finally secured Malaya and Padang in Sumatra and now look to be preparing to take Bandoeng, the last Dutch fortress on Java. Wirraway has finally discovered my Shangri La - I have moved forces into Cocos Island and plan to turn it into a painful thorn on the Japanese side if he fails to take it.

New Guinea

Port Moresby finally falls to the Japanese after doing a magnificent job of holding out for months against more than 4 Japanese divisions and hundreds of aircraft. I really struggled to supply the base so I had to turn to mass use of fleet submarines to bring in supplies on a daily basis. The American artillery units will be bought back to be reequipped with 105mm guns instead of their middling 75mm ones. I might also buy back some of the Australian units but I haven't decided yet. I currently have 150 Australian squads in the pool which might be better used in reinforcing my existing divisions in Australia.

The time I have gained to prepare my defenses in India and Australia thanks to the garrison's resistance and that of the other Allied forces in the SRA is invaluable. Both my Indian and Australian troops are fully upgraded, well rested, and very rapidly gaining in experience. In fact, I now very much doubt there will be any attempt to capture major parts of India or Australia beyond the usual occupation of northern Australia.

Instead of waiting around, I am planning an early push into Burma. Three American divisions are on their way there to join the 6th and 7th Australian and 18th British. I am leaning towards using these forces to advance while leveraging the maturing Indian army, various British Regiments/Brigades, and Allied airpower to hold against any sneaky landing behind my front.

It's an Oil War

From the start of this campaign I have put a lot of emphasis on targeting the Japanese economy and especially their oil. Through operations against Palembang and the recent carrier strike on Medan, I have knocked out approximately 650 oil wells. This is a very significant portion of the approximately 2,500 oil wells that are available to be captured in the SRA. If you count the wells that already start out damaged (Miri especially) and some that have been damaged during the conquest, Wirraway now has to repair 25% of the oil wells in the SRA to reach full theoretical extraction capacity.

The next obvious oil battle is going to revolve around Magwe. Allied intel has shown that Wirraway is bringing a very large host of anti-aircraft units and it is clear that he will try to move in with these and defend Magwe's oil as soon as it is taken. Guns or no guns, I plan to go all out against this target and I have been preparing my forces and building up my airfields accordingly.

Another more long term threat to Japanese oil production is my position on the Cocos Islands. If Wirraway does not take it back or fails to stop me from building it up, I could use it as a staging base for heavy bomber strikes against key oil targets such as Palembang.
