Hi there

not sure if anyone remembers me. Due to some not so happy circumstances I had to quit playing and get out of that mess that was around me. That was when some players arranged a tournament with something like an ELO rating for players.

Well... finally everything is fine again (more or less... in covid quarantaine right now with symptoms) and I look for a bit distraction. Any big changes that I should have heard of or is there some kind of summary about certain game changes that I can read?

Is "Fall Weiss" still the most played pbem game or is any mod more used today?

Regards
Mika

There are patch notes in the main game folder, I would give those a read as the developer updated a few times over the last few years, with changes to supply in some cases I think.

As for Fall Weiss II, the mod, I just updated it last weekend to version 9.1. I was also on a year hiatus until about a month ago. Welcome back!

Does anyone know if surface naval and sub attacks on naval units in port has been toned down a bit at all? When I last played (4 years ago), that seemed a bit excessive and made the Italian navy quite vulnerable.

yeah its 10% chance now and 20% with lvl 2 naval warfare. Ports are no OP since they dish back more damage than they take. also there is no NM or supply drop for ports connected to capital so id avoid the ports.

Note: subs attacking port is a direct attack.

Also figured this one out too - a MT that attacks a sub in a port will bypass the port and attack the sub directly.

Okay, that sounds a promising change (for surface attacks), though I presume units in port are still fairly vulnerable to air attack?

So a sub attacking a port attacks the unit docked there directly? Does the defending unit get any bonuses for being in port? For other units attacking a port, are they just attacking the port resource, with a 10%/20% chance of damaging the docked unit?

EDIT: I read in the patch notes (for 1.19 and up): "Port and Major Port Sub Defense bonus increased to 5", so I guess ships in port shouldn't be *that* vulnerable to sub attack?

I guess that may be intentional, small boat hit and run attack? Could be handy to disrupt amphibious units preparing for a Sea Lion, perhaps?

Is it actually safer for the sub to be attacked out at sea, or does the Port still provide some protection bonus to the sub (looks like the port provides 2 defense bonus vs. Naval, I think, but presumably the sub can't dive to escape attack)?

The port should add a defensive bonus if you right click and select port. It will add that bonus to the defense of the unit. Attacking a port is like a strategic bomber raid - there is 10/20 percent change of damaging the ship in the port, but the port will still deal damage back to the ship.

It is actually not MPP cost effective to sit there and bomb the port - just hottest yourself (good example is WW1 Adriatic Sea - AH can just sit in port)

Air attacks attack the ship first if there is a ship there, if not it attacks the harbor directly.

@archmach thanks, that helps to clarify things a bit. What about Transport ships in Port (e.g. if can't unload the same turn due to port damage)? The patch notes seem to imply there is a 100% chance of damage from port attacks.

I guess other port attacks by ships on ships in port could still be worth it if the target ship only has a few strength points left (e.g. after air and/or sub attacks and/or previous actions at sea), as the ship may be sunk, or if it's the French navy attacking and France has almost collapsed .

Am still wondering before the fall of France whether (in a PBEM game) it's going to be best to group the bulk of the Italian ships at top end of the Adriatic (which means leaving some ships there NOT in port, but they can all get air cover and/or be protected by an AA unit), or splitting it up, but putting all the ships in ports...

just try it in hottest - they made some changes in the med that only x amount of allied ships can be y hexes near Italy or Italy will join the Axis side as a general rule of thumb I keep the stuff in the north Adriatic but it depends you can scout with subs and if you see more UK ships in the NA and none in the med than you can keep you stuff there. Buy an Italian naval bomber and scout with the other two planes every turn to keep track of wha tis going on.

Normally you don't want to waste Italian navy fighting French ships as it will drop NM

Yes, I guess the Italians can try to scout a bit with naval and air assets to try and work out if there is much of the French and British navies in the Med, though they won't be able to spot units in ports (or subs at sea, if running silent, unless using aircraft or DDs)

Yes the naval limits to prevent early Italian activation should help a little, but as it gets close to the fall of France and normal Italian entry, the Allies could still prepare for suicide attacks with the French navy
