Friends,

I am learning by leaps and bounds running through Kull's Japan spreadsheet setup but I am hitting a road block and need help as this is a new area of the game I haven't figured out yet.

I am running through his Resize air Unit plan, and right off the bat here is where I am getting stuck. I am attempting to comply with these first 3 steps:

1) Create an Air Combat TF containing only CVL Zuiho
2) Select the Size 9 Kate unit, click the "No resize allowed" text once (changes to "Resize to fit ship")
3) Disband the Air Combat TF, look at the Kate unit and you'll see the size has changed to "12"

Here is my problem: Step 3 does not occur. The Kate unit on Zuiho has 9 active and 3 reserve aircraft [ 9 (3) ]. After I follow step 1-3, the Kate unit size does not change and remains at 9(3). What am I doing wrong? I can't progress past this step. I've tried everything I can think of and nothing works. Screenshots available.

First, keep clicking on the RESIZE menu until you can specify the number of A/C to re-size to (which will be max of 30 on Zuiho IIRC). Set to "12". I think that works better than resize to fit ship, and is more reliable.

Creating and disbanding a Air Combat TF should then work

Not sure what Kull's instructions are on his sheet, but I would re-size to 18 Fighters and 12 Torp planes, then immediately upgrade the Claudes to Zeros (and maybe that's what his instructions are)

Q-Ball is spot on concerning resizing an air unit.

My only "adjustment" to what he said would be to set the fighters to 21 (+3 spares) and torpedo bombers to 9 (+3 spares). Then they have 2 full loads of torpedoes. Just a thought...

And note that you can not resize an air unit if it would overload the CV if it was filled out.
Sometimes you have to move a unit to the base where you are at and then resize and next turn
you can return the moved unit.

I appreciate everyone's help! Sadly I am not having any luck with the instructions.

Q Ball: I did what you said and selected 12 (Zuiho capacity is 28), disbanded the task force, and checked the Kate unit and unfortunately it is still showing 9(3). I am attaching a screenshot. I don't know what's going wrong here but it's very frustrating!!

How about a screen shot of Zuiho?

Here is a screenshot of Zuiho, disbanded in port, after the failed resizing of the Kate unit.

I just tried it in a scenario 1 and it worked just fine. So I really do not know what is happening with your game.

Well this is a huge show stopper for me because it does not appear this resizing technique works at all on my end. Would you be willing to allow me to email my save game file over to you to see if it my save game file, or my computer settings causing the issue? I am playing Scenario 1 with historical first day and December 7th surprise, so it is now December 8th on my scenario.

I have, on occasion, had air units not resize when you create/resize/disband the carrier. Keep the plane unit as is (set to resize to 12 planes) and disband the TF. I've always had the unit resize when the turn ran.

In my efforts to resize I frequently had to wait several turns for the resize to happen. Not sure if it is a supply/pools cycle thing or a die roll for the influence of a distant HQ. As Mike Solli advised, keep trying.

Gents,

There are port conditions which must be met for the resize to take place.

Something along the lines of a size 7 port with more than 20k supply.

How many supplies are at Hiroshima/Kure?

I believe that Ian R has the solution. There is only 63 supply at Hiroshima/Kure. The port is fine, I was able to
load scenario 1 and resize the air units with no problems. I have never run into this playing as Allies, my resizing
is mostly done with CVEs and at major bases later in the game.

I just looked it up and the one manual reference I found quickly was:

quote:

The resize takes affect if the group’s ‘Resize Allowed’ toggle is ‘On’ and the group is located in
a base with a size 1+ airfield and the base’s supply is at least twice it’s requirements.

IME, where the air group is onboard a ship, you also need to disband the ship out of TF into port as has been described above to put it "in a base", ....

Edit. I just ran a test sequence, using the Ryujo which starts in a TF at Babeldaob.

Babeldaob is a port 3, and airfield 3, and the airgroups resized on disbanding the TF.

Next stop was Yap - port 1 airfield 2 - the airgroups resized.

Next stop Ulithi - port 3, airfield 0 - the airgroups did not resize.

I then edited the scenario to create an airfield 1, port 0 base (Woleai)- the airgroups resized:

Conclusion:

When you disband a carrier into port, on board groups will resize if the conditions for groups resizing at a land base are met.

BananaConvention needs to get more supplies to Hiroshima, or move the carrier to a base with an airfield, and sufficient supply on hand.

Thanks to Nomad and everyone here. After he looked at my save game file, it seems I didn't do things in the right order and I did a bunch of industry adjustments in the hex before resizing, and I reduced the supplies too low. I just set myself back a turn. Now I know!
