Sometimes while playing a turn, something unusual or remarkable happens. And I think of a story that will explain it. Like the lone Flying Tiger that showed up over a lone transport coming in to Rangoon. He shot down two planes and was shot down himself and the transport arrived safely in Rangoon. His plane was discovered 40 years later by children of the sailors on the ship, recovered, lovingly restored and became the centerpiece of a museum dedicated to his heroism.

My current story involves a sudden increase in sub losses in 1945.

I am loosing more subs than the IJN looses ships to subs. Granted, most of the IJN has already been sunk and I have enough subs that if a cook drops a pan over the side, it will hit three different subs on the way down.

I am probably doing something wrong. Like setting "Patrol around Target", but at this point it doesn't matter a whole lot and I was trying to save a little time. Saving time in the game is a bad idea. Sub losses had begun to climb before I began doing this, but really increased after I began. I think shallow water was a major contributor. I think I will use a few subs for lifeguard duty and use the rest to move troops between neighboring islands by lining the subs up between the islands and having the troops walk across the sub bridge.

So the story begins to develop in my mind. A certain politician that mentioned the IJN was setting their depth charges too shallow did so much later in the timeline of my game. So I had to make a story about it.

A sub is tied alongside a pier. Two burly Naval Intelligence guys deliver an inebriated politician to the sub along with signed paperwork from the politician volunteering to help the Navy in any way he can to atone for his mistakes.

The Navy, being merciful and forgiving, accepted him and he awakens the next morning onboard the sub at sea.

U.S.S. Stinkfish is a special boat. Though a sub during a time of war, the Navy felt it had plenty of subs for combat and could spare one for a special mission.

The crew has been hand picked for their uncontrollable flatulence. The Politician was forced to hot bunk with a CPO whose flatulance proved that water was not the only substance able to exist as a solid, a liquid and a gas.

There being a shortage of standard rations the boat had to make do with an endless supply of dry beans, fresh eggs, chocolate bars, grapes and cheese. Fresh water being in short supply, the cook is ordered to not pre-soak the beans.

The Navy's newest apprentice recruit, must have a job and the only job he is qualified for is to clean the head. The space for the cleaning supplies was used as extra storage for the beans, so the only items the apprentice has to clean the head with are his clothing and toothbrush.

After the war was over, the Politician was never able to win another election. A foul stench followed him wherever he went. He had poor dental hygiene as he never touched a toothbrush for the rest of his days. The crew of the Stinkfish held reunions every year. Though invited, the politician never came. The CPO went to college and became a chemistry teacher. The cook was never allowed in a kitchen ever again....except for the reunion which was always held outside and far away from any homes.
