So in a game I am playing...there were two hexes with coastal defenses in them owned by France. Germany moved into one and it was destroyed, expected...but the other changed to German control due to the hex changing ownership, unexpected.
Now Germany has a coastal defense in France that was built by the French.

Should that be the case or should the defense be destroyed?

It should be. This is linked to another issue I have not been able to track down that NCC pulled up.

I've seen this issue as well with coastal defenses sometimes being destroyed and other times being captured.

In both games for coastal defence under support units it reads:

"reduces attacks that come from coastal and beach hexes"

In WPP on page 56 there is a table where the coastal defence line reads "-20% Rugged"

So does a coastal defence reduce the strength of an attacker by 20%? Why the reference to rugged?

-20% and is considered rugged terrain against tanks. Which means they are halved in tank factors

The code reads like this. If the unit moving through the hex is not the OWNER of the hex destroy the coastal defense. CONTROLLER of the hex is not the OWNER of the hex.

Thus if you walk into the Maginout with a German.... that hex's owner if France, the moving player is Germany which is at war with France. Thus it gets destroyed.
So there might be some places were the owner is conquered, the controller is at war with the mover, and the defense doesn't get destroyed.

This is something I can't fix in the game with the current code. WP2 wont have this issue of course.
