Interesting question. Non-SP artillery pieces all have "Artillery" as their primary score. Infantry-type units have "Infantry as their primary score. And not surprisingly, AFVs have "Armor" as their primary score. Some people don't pay much attention to it, but the skill obviously effects that unit's performance. Higher Armor skill means the tank fires more accurately, for example. However, with self-propelled artillery, they start out with a higher Armor value in all instances (IIRC). This has results as far as I've been able to tell. 1) It enables them to direct-fire their weapons more accurately. That's good if you're going to use them to whack enemy infantry or vehices directly (assuming they're armored) as their primary method of usage. 2) Means their inaccuracy with indirect fire and response will be greater than their non-SP counterparts. And that's not good if they'll primarily be used in an "indirect fire" mode. To remedy this, you can always change the type of unit you buy in your initial set-up. For example, if I want 4 Wurframen later down the road, with faster response times and closer shot groups when firing indirectly, then I'll buy 81mm mortars for example in the beginning of my campaign. The 81mm's will have crews with a much higher Artillery rating than Armor/Infantry. As you fight with it, that rating will improve. When you finally convert that unit to a SP piece (Wurframen, Hummel, whatever), the unit will keep the higher-than-normal Artillery rating, but will have a lower Armor rating than a SP-since-the-beginning piece, or piece bought as a reinforcement. Once you change it to a SP piece, it'll begin to develop its Armor rating (again, IIRC). I don't honestly know though if its Armor rating will ever reach as high as its Artillery in this case, or vice versa if you purchased a SP piece first. Can anyone shed some light on this issue, over a long campaign?
