Agree with you wholeheartedly about the FBs, especially the [I]Warhawks[/I] and [I]Wirraways[/I]. Unfortunately, they have to take a beating early in the game, functioning more as fighters than bombers. Against lightly armored ships, like non-combatants or destroyers however, the SYS damage piles on as they rake the vessels with 37mm cannon, .50 cal machineguns, and the occasional 500 pounder down the smokestack - which can give even a first line cruiser a headache (as mine did against Quark's [I]Maya[/I]).
The biggest drawback I've encountered is having to fight the urge to send them on escort missions against [I]Zeroes[/I] - where they get a lamb's eye view of the slaughterhouse :(
