Status: offline 		Ok yesterday I had the pleasure of seeing two things that were surprises to me both.

Call of Duty and The Last Samurai (ok its not called Dances with Ninjas :) ).

On Call of Duty, ok I award it the most awesome experience outside of a traditional wargame period.
I am still not the sort that plays those games, but I am more than willing to report what I saw.
My friend has a kicking gamer's PC. By that, I mean, his specs are so far past what any machine needs, that the game can only deliver the absolute maximum effect.

Stunned, totally stunned eh. Never seen a game mimic shellshock like that before. Violence and the brutality of war. God it was something incredible. Felt like watching the best war films out there. Everything was so far beyond what I have ever seen. Hardly looked like a game actually. I thought, ok, when does the excessive opening cinematic end. Then my friend remarks, oh by the way, this IS the game eh.

Holy Sheeeet.

Downside, is this game is finite. You play it through and its over. Well you could play it again, but its like sitting through the same movie again. Some won't like that.

I can only say this people. If you don't like my blah looking 2d turn using dinosaurs, stop kidding yourself with those real time 3d games that pretend to actually simulate anything.

Sure you only get one dude in Call of Duty, so what. You want realism, this is what it looks like. Was impressed with how you actually seem to aim a rifle over the sights. The muzzle flash obscuring your view of what you are aiming at. Tanks brewing up as if they actually were.

The graphics for the persons exceeds the rest of the market by such a gulf, as to make claims by the rest of the market to sound like silly ramblings to be ignored.

I think this is THE game if you actually want that 3d live action look.

Ok just including The Last Samurai because I watched it as well yesterday.

For starters, it is on my dvd purchase list now.
Second, for those pointing out this that and the other error, tell them to shut up.
The movie was very enjoyable. It isn't a chick flick, nor is it a war movie nor is it a drama.
I wasn't beaten over the head with anything I found annoying. Wasn't a single example of unwanted female body parts. And nicely enough, no inaccurately made tiger tanks :)

I ain't a fauning Tom Cruise nut or anything, but I think he did a fine job on this movie.
I thought there was plenty of nice acting in the film.

This is a 2 thumbs up movie.

On "Dances with Ninjas" :

I liked it much. It's completely (almost) ahistorical, and drawing any kind of similarity between the Samurai and Native american tribes is just rediculous.

But, as a completely fictional saga placed in the real world, it's very well told. I think Ken Watanabe makes a great Katsumoto.

The single player is not where COD shines (or they wanted it to let shine). This game has been from the beginning on designed for multiplayer (and that´s where it really kicks ass ). The single player is only there for getting accostumed to the game

Status: offline 		Yes I didn't see it in multiplayer mode, but heck I guess it would only end up looking more impressive in that respect.

No chance in hell my machine could ever run it though.

But I have not seen a game on the computer that even compares to this.

Status: offline 		Les is there enough money in your budget for a PS2 or Xbox? Many of those types of game are availble ofr the consoles. I had a great time playing Medal of Honor on the PS2, which plays just like the game you described.

Status: offline 		Guilty pleasure dept. Need for Speed Underground on my son's GameCube - I recently got a new Subaru Forrester with a 5-spd. My son asked why I kept moving the black lever thing all the time (He was only a babe When I had my Talon TSi Turbo - that I had to trade in on a mini-van).

Cut to a month later and 2 weeks of him playing NFS:U - Now he watches the tach like hawk from the back seat and critiques my shifting - "Wait - wait DAAAD you under shifted AGAIN. You need nitrous if you really want to get this thing off the line..."

The cut scene replays of the crashes from different camera angles with the light all glinting off the curves of the cars is so cool. The wet look road surfaces are too.

I liked Last samurai also - thought Cold Mountain blew chunks...

Well, duh.

Medal of Honor is available for PC too, including all expansions. No need to buy a game console for that.

"Defectors" from the Medal of Honor team (who allegedly couldn't take more of EA's cr*p) split off and founded the group who made Call of Duty...

Status: offline 		Well considering my son has the PS2 its a defacto already done deal.

I have a used copy of MoH lying around here somewhere that a friend cast off on me, but somehow it didn't have the same effect on me.

Might have merely been to brief in looking at it. But again, my PC is not a particularly good machine for those fast paced 3d intensive programs. That, and watching a guy that plays that sort of game a lot, does a lot more to assess a game, then my clumsy examination would reveal :)

Usually when I want to get a good angle on a 3d game, I usually go and scope it out on a friends computer so it gets done right.

As it stands my copy of EYSA is not getting used much lately. I basically only fiddle with it when I visit a buddy in Belleville I know, that has a powergamer's rig. Gives me something to do, and his computer can at least run it properly.

Actually its kind of nice to hear that! I was wondering how MOHAA players felt CoD online play matches up to MOHAA? I've only played CoD demo and I used to avidly play MOHAA online.

Status: offline 		I watched the last samurai some days ago and I have a very mixed opinion about it. Some parts are good, other are boring. And I don't think that Tom Cruise play well in this movie.
The battle scenes are good and the Japanese actors, them, play well.

i never played one of the games online only SP.

how is the best way to play online ?
also how to find beginner players like me ?

Status: offline 		Well Firefly I will put it to ya like this. I am not a shooter RTS gamer. And everyone knows it.

So getting this grognard to compliment a shooter is not what you would call easy.

If you won't mind, that the game is 20 relatively difficult looking missions, that play out, and then the story basically concludes, then you have removed the only thing that usually prevents me from buying games of this sort.

I require endless repeat playability from my wargames.

But, I still give this game a 2 thumbs up rating. It really impressed someone that normally could care less.

It's worth it, but multiplayer is what makes it last in the long run. (You play through the singe player campaign in a day or two even on Veteran setting).

IIRC, the latest update enables PunkBuster in online games, which should get rid of most of the cheaters. TK'ers do exist though.

If the game is a shooter, and is online capable, then it is extremely likely, that the fun is in online play.

All the shooters I witness, are viewed on a friends rig which he keeps mega maxed out for online 3d intense high speed connection based sort of entertainment.

And it is fairly clear, that you want to be playing him, more than you want to be playing your self against the computer AI.

Status: offline 		Thanks, Les and Bellisarius for your comments. It looks like CoD may be worth looking at when the price drops. I'm not totally anti-FPS myself, I enjoyed Operation Flashpoint and Deus Ex, both of which took elements from other genres. I tend to find the pure shooters like Quake or Half-Life a bit boring though.

Really online playing with an FPS is sort of quick and dirty. What I mean is, it is a little difficult at first to find the best way to play. MOHAA itself comes with the gamespy finder so just look for forums that seem to sound right: "New B Forum, Play Nice." If English isnt your first language fear not, there are tons of Deutscher MOHAA forums. Also, if you can download the program called "The All Seeing Eye." That should really help you find other people that you might want to play with and against on a regular basis. It works much better than GamesSpy.

Status: offline 		The only thing I hate about COD is no skins in MP play. MOH was ok but the idea of you being able to play in the skin of choice was outstanding. Pluse they need to fix the bunny hopping in COD it was BS in MOH and its still BS in COD. Some clans have got some good realistic mods running on there servers "2ndforcerecon" is the best I have played so far next time on look it up

Status: offline 		America's Army gave me the squirts after a while. Far too many losers out there who have the time to memorize blind shots so you get killed without ever seeing who shot you through the fog. Plus the weapons modelling is crap, I used to score quite well on the range and especially so in short-range snap practices but I couldn't hit a thing in AA.

OTOH I just downloaded the Steel Beasts demo, it's an old game (1998) but I was impressed enough to fork out $40 for it. It's shipping bundled with Panzer Commander so I'll let you know what I think of the pair when it arrives. The SB demo is cool though, I'm not a tank gunner but it sure feels about right. Planning is a bit tricky and involved though especially if like me you are mainly interested in the shooting things blowing up stuff side of it.

Status: offline 		That's kinda funny Sarge, because yesterday for the first time I thought to myself, ok, I gotta see what all this hype is about with "Call of Duty". I've had it on a PCgamer demo sitting in a drawer for a couple of months now, never even had a 2nd thought about trying it out. Until yesterday.

As you I was impressed with the overall flow and the brotherhood of men as I played out the demo. I even resorted to using the German machine gun over the US version because there were more dead germans laying around that had dropped these weapons so lots more ammo. heh

What of course hit me in the face as I completed the demo mission was the fact it was a mission based game. Every time it is played it would have the same objectives, over and over and over again, and in the same order. I don't care for repetitive or orderly gaming in this genre. So while it's awesome looking and gives one the simulation of what real war fighting might have been about. It lost its lustre with me because of the linear approach it took, vs BATTLEFIELD 1942 which is simular in that it has "scenes of battles" but, nowhere near the linear play. In the "scenes" of BF42 you can go anywhere and do anything at anytime with any piece of equipment heh as long as the major objective of defeating the enemy is complied with.

And it works in the "single player" game this way. Too much emphasis is placed on FPS games being MP games, there's a slew of "non-multiplayer" based fans out there as there are MP fans, so when a game like BF42 delivers me the kind of enjoyment I want in a FPS without seeming LINEAR or same ole same ole every game, that's the game that takes top billing with me. ;)

Call of Duty is a "graphics candy baby" treat. But, it's still a linear mission based game and once through it like you said, it's like watching a rerun of the same movie. I did enjoy hiding behind a dead cow in the demo blasting away at the mortar crews! lol Always wondered what that would be like, but, of course, games don't have smellavision or scratch n sniff stickers to put on the monitors! LOL So no realism there.

Call of Duty was the first cookie eating WWII FPS that actually made me feel like I was shooting the rifle... not aiming a crosshair.

All else is quizzical BS.
