newbie here with a couple of questions

I must say to start with this is a really great forum, I have found out much of what I needed to know here, but of course I have a few question for you guys if you can help.

I played 3 of the short scenarios and threw myself into a big campaign v the ai and thats when I realised I still have gaps in my knowledge, so I'll begin

1) Seaplane tenders, I did a search, learned a lot but I still can't get my head around the whole thing, how about an idiots guide there please

2) How do I get a Computer Controlled TF to turn into a CS convoy?

3) Is there no way of eliminating Recce aircraft atall? As far as I can see only flak seems to bother them.

Lastly a question about general Strategy. In my present game v IJN ai, its the 1st of March 43 and after taking Buna and Gili Gili, I have just captured Lae after a 6 weeks slogging match, In the east Lunga has fallen and I'm building up forces and supplies to go for Shortland, which I will launch in late April or early May. I should have 4 div's plus available for the assault. I plan to use Lae and Shortland as the foundations for my attack on Rabaul, which is the keystone for the Japanese and If I can take it then I can move against Kaveing and eventually Truk, though I think I'll run out of game time before then. I not planning on going for the minor bases, that will dilute my strength for my main assault.
Does this sound about right ? I now realise my knowledge of the Pacific Campaign in general is woeful.

1) Manual says - “AV and CS ships will add aviation support to support Floatplanes, Float-Fighter and Patrol (they are seaplanes) planes that are based at a base in their hex. They add aviation support equal to their capacity + 18 planes onboard (Japanese - capacity + 10 planes). This support is not given if the ship ’s system damage is greater than 50 or if the ship has any floatation or fire damage. AV support is listed as a “+” to the normal aviation support value of a base, so that 30 aviation support (ground) and 18 (AV) support will appear as 30 +18. AV support does not benefit normal aircraft or the level of aviation support these aircraft need.”

So the best way to use AVs is to dock them at a base where is no ground aviation support available and where you want to station your float and patrol a/c. Remember also that AV cannot launch planes while at sea, only when a ship is docked onboard floatplanes can fly. Japanese scout cruiser on the contrary can launch their planes at sea and very useful when operate with carriers and as ASW patrol.

Read 8.11 Manual. Example: Create Transport TF at Truk (10-15 large marus + 5-7 escort vessels for the best productivity) change ‘human control’ to ‘computer control’, ‘routine convoy’ status will appear then set TF destination – choose base you want supply automatically, let it be Rabaul. TF’s status will change to ‘CS: Rabaul’. From now on, this TF will be constantly transporting supplies from Truk to Rabaul. Note if there are any TK or AO among cargo vessels in CS TF they will be transporting fuel, as they should, without any additional orders to load fuel. I didn’t use this option myself often, since in games vs human you make enemy subs job much easier that way. Read 8.11 for more details.

Beef up the CAP and bring more flak to a base which is visited by enemy recce birds often, more they fly more they die. At least one of CAP squadrons must be at 20,000 ft or so. No other special receipts available.

bypass Shortland if you can, land raiders and Eng's on the next island, build bases, you can either land troops or move overland to attack Bruin/Buka

use those to cut off supply to Shortland, and once large enough bomb Rebaul, back into the stoneage
(if I remember right, each base on Bville, can be built up to a 4, so each can base Bombers, and there are 6 bases that can be built/used on Bville)

depending on how your war has gone, you could be faceing up to 60-90,000 troops on Shortland, cut there supply and let them rot on the vine for a while before you try to land, it also tends to have lots of coastal guns, so the landing is going to be costly, if you try to go Head to Head with it

I sure I have some sort of strange bug in the present game, after taking Lae the ground units retreated east I that there was still a unit in the hex called "6th Kure SNLF" which I attacked and destroyed a 300 man/2 gun unit, I continued with the next turn, and there it was there again, and when I clicked on the hex the pop up showed 2 bases, then the game went CTD. So it seems like I'll have to go back to a previous save to see if its there or not or start over.

I just have a couple questions I'm sure you guys can answer easily..

1. Why do ENG units always stop and build bases at beaches when they have orders to simply travel through the hex ? I'm playing the Allies, so its not a big deal, but for the Japanese that would be just be another spot to send supplies.

2. Is there any way to dismantle a base once you no longer need it ?

3. I have been running the game at 1 day / turn and its moving slow for me - used to PacWar's 7 days per turn... What do you guys usually run at ? Is there a group consensus on the speed ?

I’m afraid you cannot avoid this. I’ve never thought about this as a serious problem, it happens sometimes when you’re moving engineers on New Caledonia, but it doesn’t bother much, as IJN player I never saw this, it’s better for IJN to move his troops by sea, if you don’t have access to those trails in Australia and Caledonia

You mean destroy improvements? That could be a worthy option, to ruin airstrips and blow up some port facilities. If your base is about to fall you can decrease a/f and port size with combat engineers. Too bad this is impossible in UV, nice idea though.

I think most of the people here play with 1 day per turn pace.

You can turn off the build functions for port, airbase and fortifications in the base screens by hitting the 'Stop expanding...' buttons. Fo rexample, I usually order the EABs at Koumac and Basse-Poya to march back to Noumea at the beginning of a game, and I stop the expansion orders of all 'dots' between Koumac and Noumea and voila, the EABs march south without building bases.
