2. Colonel Bogey March (Bridge Over the River Quay.(sp?))
3. Green Leaves of Summer (The Alamo)
4. Opening Theme (A Bridge Too Far.)
5. The Longest Day (The Longest Day.)
6. Opening Theme (The Great Escape.) Eric Maietta

2. Colonel Bogey March (Bridge Over the River Quay.)
3. Green Leaves of Summer (The Alamo.)
4. Opening Theme (The Great Escape.)
5. Opening Theme (The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming!)
6. Opening Theme (Force Ten from Navarone.)
7. The Longest Day (The Longest Day.)

Status: offline 		By and large I've been very disappointed in music for war movies and the only ones that stick in my memory right now are 1) Zulu and 2) The Bridge on the River Kwai.

Status: offline 		Only a few come to mind at the moment, but my faves include: Gettysburg Main Theme, Das Boot Main Theme, "Albinoni Adagio" (from Gallipoli), Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings" (from Platoon), and the soundtrack from Col. Shaw's last walk on the beach from Glory (anyone know what that's called?).

Status: offline 		"Victory At Sea", Richard Rodgers, orchestration by Bennett - hands down the best "war" music, though admittedly not a war movie as such, rather a TV series. Next in line, "Battle of Britain", William Walton, available on an EMI disk along with some of Walton's other movie music. Classic of all time: Prokofiev's music for "Alexander Neveskiy", though not a "war movie" as such, it certainly IS about war. A brilliant achievement, the Battle on the Ice has been copied by many film composers who folowed Prokofiev, after all emulation is the greatest compliment of all in art. Incluidng the fellow who did the music for BattleZone. Morton Gould for his excellent score for the CBS doc series "World War I", released in 1964 and largely ignored since then. Bing

The music from "Gettysburg" is pretty decent I feel.

A friend of mine mentions two Republican Civil war songs, The Republican version of "Oriamendi" a Carlist marching song, and a parody of the Fascist anthem called "Cules al sol" Know where I can find the words? Dankie, troopie

How about Walton's treatment of the Agincourt theme in his music for Henry V, admittedly the oldest battle song I know. Then how about Holst's Mars music? If this isn't war music then I don't know what is.

The Holst is a good example, though I'm not sure if it has actually been used in a war movie. Henry V isn't really a war movie either, though it is one heck of a fine movie, with some great battle scenes, and I think I like Walton's music for this one the best of all, come to think of it. I'm sure the influence of Holst can be heard in movie scores - once a work gains prominence the references to it are inevitable. Also, you know, we haven't brought up military band music, another entire genre onto itself. Bing

No, Drex posted the above quote concerning Holst's Mars, Bringer of War(from his Planets suite). I think many discerning people saw a major conflict in the making in 1914 and before. I did research on that some years ago - a lot of research, matter of fact. I came to a simple conclusion: Europeans wanted their dirty war, they wanted it pretty badly despite all the talk to the contrary. They were aching to start one - I also came away from the research convinced that if Germany had not marched first, it could as easily have been France. Just a sidebar and no, I don't know how that got into a discussion of war movie music. Oh ... someone wrote that I revealed a background in "classical" music. I don't classify it that way. Many great musicians, including Verdi and Debussey, have said there are only two kinds of music: Good and bad. Charbrier made a great joke on that statement, but you kinda have to know composers and eras to get it. This really IS drifting off topic, so I will cut that out right now. Bing

Status: offline 		Being a child of the Sixties, I especially liked the soundtrack that accompanied the Viet Nam films of the '70s and '80s. "The End" by The Doors during the opening credits of "Apocalypse Now" creates a dark and sinister mood that sets up the movie perfectly. [ September 12, 2001: Message edited by: Easy8 ]
