The offensive picks up steam, bases are falling from the Upper Solomons and Rabaul to Borneo and up in Burma.
Yenen FINALLY falls in China but I suffered a reverse at Hengchow.
I may have picked off Maryland on her way back to the states for repairs (Put 3 torpedoes into her)

Yes, something very odd happened at Hengchow. Check me on this: the Allies mounted a deliberate (not shock) attack, and suffered about four times the casualties of the Japanese. The assault odds were only 2 to 1. And the Japanese were still driven off in retreat??

Pry would have to confirm but it would seem he had a lot of ART and support troops in Henchow and not a lot of INF. The assualt odds were 2-1 but the 676 guns must of caused the casualties. I would guess 2-1 is enough to get some troops to retreat.

wouldn't call it 'odd' The combat assault power at Hengchow is very strong.....1300+ assault points. However, the bulk of my Chinese forces are inexperienced. The Japanese units had just arrived and were completely unentrenched so a 2:1 odds calc was all that was needed to make them back off. The inexperienced but beefy attack combined with the new urban terrain hex rule resulted in a large amount of casualties to the attacker, but they're determined attack was enough to force a retreat, albeit at heavy cost. Worth it to me.....because it makes Pry burn supply as well as men.....and thats a bad proposition when your on the offensive everywhere else at the same time!

In the past.....the attacker tended to suffer less casualties than the defender (Atoll combat excepted) and i always found that odd....particularily when attacking fortified positions. That tendancy appears to have been reversed now and while certainly should not be an absolute, is more sensical to me......we 'are' fighting in urban terrain afterall......Stalingrad was like that, albeit, on a larger, better tranined and more bloody scale than in fighting the Chinese.

One thing is becoming apparant.....jumping into strongly defended hexes with insufficent force levels and not backing it up with air and/or sea bombardment is becoming more costly.

Found out why Pry was able to hit Maryland.......gonna voice an opinion on that little biscit.

The biggest problem was my forces were exausted with high fatigue, they marched 120 miles from Wuhan to Changsha. Then attacked and captured Changsha, then marched 120 more miles to Hengchow and attacked without any rest. They gave better than they got but were just wore out and forced to retreat. Was trying to take Hengchow before Nik had a chance to start building forts. Now I have to rest and then start a seige.

Is the Yenen CR a bug of some sort? Several days in a row you've attacked against zero opposition and yet the base won't fall...

Nice work with the Maryland - Nik, you must be a little peeved...

There's a bug at Yenen.

Peeved isn't the word, considering the reason she got torpedoed was because the AI decided to start splitting off my damaged BB's into little TF's with but a single escort

I wish they would provide some kind of 'lock' switch that would keep any ships from splitting off. I have had the same problem in UV, make a tf of cripples with escorts and the undamaged escorts split off and hurry home leaving the cripples with no ASW protection.

I was wondering where the ABDA fleet was, I found out the hard way. Nik sent 2 TF to Ambonia while I was unloading reinforcements. Call this one a victory for Ole Nik. 2 destroyers sunk outright, 1 I had to scuttle with 99% system damage and 3 more in deep Pooh-pooh, he also sunk 2 transports the good thing was all the troops unloaded and he sunk my supplies. On the plus side of this, I sank Houston and a Dutch destroyer and Ambonia fell. I now have a size 4 airfield deep in the southern SRA which will now make it hard for Nik to operate surface ships in the area.

Madflava, Peeved is not the correct term, livid is more like it, wow I have not see some of the words he used in his email in a very long time. The email came with a "Viewer Discretion Advised Warning"
Yep he was hot….

Yenen is a bug, My forces are locked in a pitched battle with a phantom force. I did capture the base a couple of turns ago.

Prince of Wales continues to live a charmed life but her time will come...

Hi all,

I have a concern about ground combat.
I know this is only alpha and you probably have figured this out...

The Japanese are making several deliberate attacks at anywhere from 1:1.5 to 1.5:1 . I like the idea of the attacker taking more casualties then in UV, however, this might be taking it to far.
From the reading i have done a failed banzai (shock) attack by the Japs generally had a casualty ratio of 5-10:1 Japanese:Allied.
Deliberate attacks with relatively close numbers in a non-atoll
type of situation even if they fail the ratios should be in the range of 1:1 to 5:1.
It seems failed attacks in the Pacific were usually called off at the 2-3:1 casualty range.
Some of the attacks i have seen in this AAR have had results of 100:1 or so in deliberate attacks. That is clearly wrong.

Commentary?

Michael

I figured I would point out why we have been so quite here of late. There have been many tweaks, fixes and additions over the last 2 builds that we have to test. Testing comes first this is something we do "Extra" when we get caught up with our assigned tasks (Kid likes to crack his whip ) we will get back to providing commentary and answer what questions we can.

Would I be correct in assuming you tried a "workaround" for the bug at Yenen by sending a small number of Allied troops to be sacrificed?

Also, Nik's AK's are really getting creamed by IJN submarines. Has there been a breakdown of the convoy system, or was Nik gambling by deliberately sending out unescorted cargo ships?

no workaround, the latest build fixed the Yenen Bug.

The AK's are getting hit hard because Pry changed his sub strategy from a close hug to prowling the distant sea lanes most likely to be chosen (i.e. the shortest distance between two points being a straight line)

Escorts are in short supply and those that i have are either already on duty or were transfered to areas i figured would be "hotter"

That and i havn't been paying as much attention as i should. Things are kind of crazy right now....such that i hvn't been able to even look at combat replays. That tends to blind me at times to things that are happening in the "rear areas" while i check on various fronts.

I've already implemented some countermeasures though.....its a big big ocean and altering a convoy's path by a few hexes has already allowed several important convoys to slip by Pry's little picket line.

In one way, i'm doing a "King" at the expense of the merchant marine. Troop convoys are getting first priority and have beefy protection. Less vital merchant convoys are being left to fend for themselves. Pry aint the only one who can be EVIL

We got word last night that the next build coming out (early next week) will invalidate all saves so this AAR will end at that time. Again for those of you have been following our little adventures we thank you.

As I said at the beginning of this I tried some things differently than I have done them before, so pop quiz time anyone notice the one major strategy change different in this game verses the 3 day game? (If you have read the AAR closely it is obvious) There are several minor changes that are harder to notice Nik did of course but he knows how I play so well now that it is hard to get away with anything for very long.

Prior to these multi day turn tests, there was no way on earth you would have convinced me to do anything other than 1 day turns however after doing 2 of these now I "might" a consider multi-day game. For my money for folks who are going to play multi-day games, the 2 day turn is the way to go, it allows you a degree of control to respond to events in a timely manner but watching the 2nd day unfold knowing there is nothing you can do to stop it is still edge of your seat, fingers crossed hoping you did not totally screw the pouch exciting.
