I am playing the Allies...The IJN has captured Port Moresby and I am on the verge to lose Luganville before August 1942... I do still have 4 CVs....Has anyboy ever rebounded after losing this base? Should I go ahead and surrender? Don't want to waste my time.... I am trying to play 7 games at once with only an hour at night to do my turns....I think I have too much on my plate....

So?

I would rather have 4 intact carriers than PM....
Luganville is a loss, but again it is a pain for the IJN
to run in stuff...As you get LBA, it becomes very hard for him
to take the constant hits...That said, if you lose your carriers
here...Well then you`re in a world of hurt!

Losing PM is a given. Losing Luganville is really no big deal because the IJN will have a lot of difficulty keeping it in supply. Using your level bombers from Noumea, Koumac and especially Efate you can make the Japanese position there untenable in fairly short order. There's no hurry- make sure you stop him from coming any further south first, then plan the counter offensive. Keep you carriers safe in the meantime. Sounds a little simpler than it really is, but this is hardly a cause for surrender.

A bit addicted to this game, huh?
I also have 7 games going.

August 42 is still early days yet for the Allies. With 4 carriers intact, you have already done a pretty good job. Make him pay the piper for Luganville. In another 2 months you can swamp him with LBA from Noumea. Did he take Efate? If he didn't, build it up fast then use it to prevent him from resupplying Luganville.

This is a challenging scenario you've got there. Just remember to take back Luganville before Autovictory kicks in.

I take about 15 minutes per turn, sometimes more if I check and double-check my moves in case I forgot something. But methinks to be able to switch context to handle 7 PBEM games, man ... Already my dear wifey is complaining of spousal neglect and that's just 1 game.

Cheers!

Bomb the crap out of his port and nail his supply, set your I boats in
position of his supply routes around luganville and use your other subs
to keep planting mines were your I boats are ambushing.
He will stop dead in his tracks if he can't keep supply and will lose lots of ships
doing so.

Millsprings, you aren't in a bad position at all. As previously pointed out, you're first concern is Luganville. If the IJN has the base by autovictory time, it isn't the end of the world. They still need 2X the amount of supplies there as well to qualify for the autovictory. Luganville, Townsville, Rockhampton, Brisbane and Noumea are the bases you have to worry about in terms of autovictory. Here's what I would do:

First, remember that bombing runs eat his supplies. Park your two engine bombers at Noumea and start pounding away. If you have Koumac or one of the other New Caledonia bases built up then use that as well. At Efate Port Vila, I would base any fighter-bombers (with their shorter legs) there and hit Luganville from there as well. As to what to hit, it depends if the IJN has based planes there. If so, use the 2E for smashing the runways from 6000 feet. Use the fighter bombers to hit the ports. If there aren't any planes at Luganville, then use everything on the ports. The IJN can't unload supplies if the ports are burning...

Get your non-combatant ships out of harm's way. Disband them at Noumea, or maybe run to Brisbane. Whereever you put them, make sure you CAP the base. HIs carrier pilots won't have much to go after.

The IJN player will most likely use some of his CV fighters to LRCAP Luganville if there are no fighters based there. But in the back of the IJN lpayer's mind is the fact your four carriers are still lurking out there...and he can't use too many fighters to LRCAP a land base and leave his carriers exposed.

Submarines... Pay attention to the search results during the combat replay. Find out where his convoy routes are... park your subs along the routes. Set the subs' home port to EPV for quick fuel and supply turnarounds.

Anyhow, that's what I would do. Surrender at this point is definitely unnecessary.

Of course - I'm not playing 7 games at once. Congratulations to you for doing that...I have enough trouble with Quark on one game.

Yes I agree with Shadow et al. Luganville (and Efate) can be traps for the Japanese as well as a springboard. If he can keep his momentum up then he might be able to consitantly close Noumea and this will hurt and possibly kill you. But if not you have plenty of time to start pounding LV over the next few months. There is no rush, wait until his CVs have retired and then start hitting him. Recall your subs and flood the area with your Dauntlesses and Avengers. You should have lots of bases on New Cal and hopefully the little 0/0 islands too. Spread out your planes because he can easily close any one base at any time, but not all at the same time.

Personally I think an Australian attack is far more deadly to the allies (unless he can bag Noumea) as the bases are not mutually supportive down there and he can knock them out one after another if he can build up the LCU ratio high enough. Around Noumea it's almost impossible to close all the allied bases so no taskforces and bases are safe without heavy escort. That's very hard to keep up over a few months.

Good luck

Hey Folks,

Made a mistake...did a panic attack...lost the Saratoga...violated all the Pinciples of War.....I am down to 3 CV's....massed human wave assaults at Luganville and Efate....going to lose both...LOL....my men will fight and die in their positions....I am doing well in the other games.....I am playing three day turns with these chaps....I think the three day games are a bit much......I like one or two day turns.....I will take your advice about attritional air battles and attacking sea lanes.....

What if the japanese goes after your carriers? he should have the full monty available. That is what i would do as the japanese. If his carriers hang around Noumea, kill them before the TBF's show up (a few of the groups should still be using TBD's at that time).
Still, since Koumac and Noumea will have received the full Build-up, the japanese might just have gotten more than he ca chew.

Hi, One more thing about auto victory. It is not enough to own a base on or after 1 Jan 1943. The base has to be supplied at least 2x required.
Bomb the port to destroy supply. And see about stopping a few supply convoy. I lose Luganville and Efate all the time and have yet to give up an auto victory there. (I did give an auto victory for Townsville once and Brisbane of all places another)

What is a better tactic for the allies (if the japanese have captured Luganville and maybe Efate)??
1.keep your carriers in theater
2.Transfer the air units to Noumea and send the carriers back to pearl
I am not talking about a Carrier-fleet containing all six carriers equipped with TBF's. I consider such a task force equal in strength to what the japanese can show up with. I am talking about sometime before 09/42, when you have less CV's available, still loaded up with TBD's, at least partially.

Probably I would send them back to Pearl unless you thought there was reason to think you opponent would try something in OZ, and even then if the Jap carrier strength is too much greater. The only use for them may be to keep one to move planes from Oz to Noumea, and the Long Island could handle that. An island base can't be sunk

The other side of this is if the opponent knows you have no carriers he can operate more freely.
