just want to know that if i can use a surface combat TF to engage an air combat TF?

Is it possible?I look through the manual which told me that if i set the TF react to enimy it is possible but i never succeed.....

My TF is always hit by the planes come from the air combat TF during the air operation phase....

I believe that an SCTF will only react to an enemy TF entering a nearby friendly base hex. As it is not likely that an ACTF would ever do this, an SCTF will never catch an ACTF by reaction movement.

Now, my question would be, if a friendly SCTF and an enemy ACTF just happened to end a movement phase in the same hex, is there a chance of surface combat?

If opposing carrier TFs and surface TFs end in the same hex, surface action can occur. This may happen at a base hex (unlikely in PBEM, but in my games the AI tends to send Japanese carriers to Lunga, where my BBs got them a few times) or by 'manual' interception, i.e. good guessing where the carriers might end their turn and sending a surface TF to that hex (which will most likely only work against a crippled CV).

While the surface TF will try to attack the Air TF in the same hex, the aircraft carriers will run like h*ll and the escorts will sacrifice themselves to save the carriers during ship to ship combat. Carriers are generally faster in running away than the surface TF ships pursuing.

If you can get surprise during a night attack, or find a damaged carrier with a small escort, then maybe your surface TF can attack with guns.

But if the carrier is flying planes - you are not going to get close enough to fire guns - and will be dodging bombs.

having said that, I had a Surface Combat TF commanded by China Lee, with NoCarolina and Washington, several cruisers, etc., run down and engage - IN DAYLIGHT - a TF with both Shokaku and Zuikaku, both of which were dinged up from previous action (that day) by Cactus Air and the groups from CV3 & CV6 They were hit just hard enough that they could not run away. Remember the old Ray Stevens Song "Speedball" - Oh, it was terrible, for the IJN. They didn't have enough strike AC to do anything terrible to the BB's, and the fighters didn't have a wax dog's chance in torment of doing a thing, and 16"/45s really mess up CV's. Both sunk outright during the action, and their escort was mauled.

It made the rest of the Guadalcanal campaign so much easier. The only thing you have to worry about then is LBA from Rabaul, and the Junyo/Hiyo pair and the CVL's. I have been playing PacWar since 1994, and UV since 2002, and it has happened exactly twice.

I have just started playing again after a few months, but I had a BB vs. CV as the U.S. twice, both at night...once with the Japan CV at Lunga like the prev post state (after a couple hits the CV got away) and the other time I did a raid between Rabual and Truk with a 2 CV and 1BB taskforce. Imagine my suprise when I ran into a 1 CV and 1 BB and 2 CA Force. I acually lost that as a surface action (the BB and a couple of escorts to include a CLAA ?Atlanta?), But the next turn my CV's wore them out. I got the CV's and CA's for sure. I'm pretty sure I got the BB ?Kongo? but it never said and I never saw it show up in the sunk list. By that time, though, I had taken out alot of BB trying to get Moresby so I might have just missed it.

Doesn't happen too often nowadays, especially with patches reducing effectiveness of CV groups in coastal hexes.

But before that, players would cover invasion TFs with CV groups.

Not a good idea.

Here is a personal favorite from a PBEM game as the USN to illustrate that point.....
