A crack US fighting force is moving in on a small town in the desert; there aim, to capture or kill Al Sadr (SO HQ).

The entire town is thirsting for American blood. Although outnumbered and vastly outmuscled, the Mehdi Army will fight to the bitter end. Equipped with a few mines, road-side bombs, explosing trucks (imagine), several RPG's (why can't they fire on infantry?) and a few T-144s that remained buried in sandpits until now, they locals may be completely obliterated by US aircraft, but first they must be found.

This might make a good tournament. All line up and see who can take Al Sadr out the quickest and with the least amount of casualties. Your prize, a trip for two to Baghdad staying in the Share-a-tin Hothell.

--Initial US Radio Chatter--

Yo Sarge. Everything quiet out there.
Keep your eyes open! Forward scouts are locating the enemy. Be sure to sweep for bombs as we approach. Let's not get sloppy folks.

Minefield is being extremely cautious. I guess he doesn't want any civilian casualties. Either that or waiting for his infiltrators.

We don't have to worry about too many of those infiltrators showing up.

Many units in sight of the town now. Hit a mine on a VH. Not too happy about that one.

AGHHH! Lost a greyhound to a stupid sniper assualt. 52% chance. Damn clever sniper.

Everyone is being seen. Must be more snipers hidden out there. 'Local intelligence'.

Top and bottom VH's taken. Turn 4 for those of you interested.

MG nest fired at me but we can't spot it.

That was one kick-ass suicide bomber who took out the Greyhound. US forces assualted with a platoon of Pattons and unleashed about a dozen HE tank rounds on him. I thought the record was broken as I watched the yanks expend everything they could muster on this lone sniper. After hours of supressing him, an M-9 bazooka managed to sneak up and obliterate. Their reward for such hard work is to sit stranded as mortars reign down on them.

US forces have begun bombing the town indiscriminantly. Ok, a slight exaggeration - i guess recon must have spotted smoke from the mortar barrels.

The Americans are very wary of getting to close to the town walls and continue to hover around the flanks.

We wait and we pray

Civilian casualties my ass. They are unleashing hell on us. Bomb in back to the stone age. Drop some 60's on those snipers. Drop 105's on the mortar positions.

And for god's sake, quit wasting your ammo on that lone sniper. I think a Patton did kill it though. Everyone got your target shooting in? Good. Let's go get Al Sadr.

We fired too many times and now they have seen our MG Nest! It has already taken several hits from a Pershing, i think, and there's no smoke to hide behind. Our snipers are picking them off, one by one, as they near the gates of Hell.

MG nest is gone. There is a log bunker nearby as well.

Those damn snipers are getting on my nerves. My lone sniper walked into a building to find himself face-to-face with another sniper. He took one shot, missed, and was killed with the return volley.

We killed one sniper up north. It was one of the three that has been taking potshots at our infantry. Hopefully we will get that situation under control. I don't know why I'm even messing around in that region. The VH's are way to the south.

To the south things are pretty quiet.

They tried to take out my artillery this round with some mortars but I had moved them the round before. Plus some of that smoke was from me trying to hide so that helped save my crews as well.

Very clever manouvering of artillery by the US, narrowly avoiding depletion. All we ended up doing was digging our own graves (according to minefield).

I feel for your lone sniper, but I didn't give you more because the US aren't using those tactics in hostile urban environments, to my knowledge. As you can see, to easy to die.

Glad I gave you those P-47D aircraft, though. It's a beautiful way to go, bathing in pure napalm. Very good deployment there, too!

Allah achbar!

And Minefield, don't worry about those Victory Hexes. The aim of the game is to get Al Sadr! I won't be counting points, only bodies

So much for staying in the role. We are having a timewarp here in the dessert. One or the other commanders casted a spell that kept the files from being sent back and forth so we are back to before the napalm strike.

and the worst thing about this unfortunate mishap is the downing of one P47D a/c and the damaging of another. Shows that there's a bit of luck involved, i guess. I lost a couple of trucks this time round, too, dammit. There was gold in those trucks.

This timewarp has kind of soured the game. Proceed as you wish, Minefield.

minefield is doing a very effecient job at taking out key defences. My entire armor (3 T44s) has been destroyed by Pershings and a/c without getting a shot off! my holy snipers are managing to destroy several vehicles, though (before they get too holey) air defences managed to shoot down a mitchell and did some damage to other a/c. the F80s weren't as effective as i thought they might be - they took out one of their own trucks (complete with mortar sections) way to the rear!! and one of them just flew over and did nothing, but the damage has been done. start digging sandpits boys!

Looks like if my planes don't finish off my vehicles, all these blasted mines will. I think it's time to slow down the assualt.

The 'crack' US team needs better leadership. Most of the vehicle losses have been due to mines. We are slowly clearing out the town of snipers, rpg's, engineers, and other dastardly foes. Our troops remain vigilant for Al Sadr. After this, none of them will give him mercy. Those mines have killed too many of their comrades.

Well, there weren't that many mines, only in obvious places like in the middle of an intersection. Then again, I probably should've given you some engineers or a mine clearing tank or something. Realistic though (anonymous bombs, etc). Those F-80s are cool - very quick! Pity they like friendly fire so much; must be gregarious or something.

As for Al Sadr, he got away. The game wasn't supposed to end so soon, but I think it's because Colonel Minefield took all the VH's. Didn't think of that.

Here are the results:
US casualties: 73 men, 5 soft vehicles, 2 APCs, 5 AFVs and 3 aircraft!
"Do you know how much those aircraft cost, Colonel! Tanks aren't cheap, either. Better than the lives of brave young Americans, though. It's only hardware."
SO rebel casualties: 180 men, 8 arty pieces, 3 soft vehicles and 3 AFVs!

Awesome kill ratio by the US forces. Unfortunately, 150 of these casualties were civilians (you can tell by their clothes). Jokes aside, I'm sure you would've got Al Sadr in the next few turns. Very good work, Minefield! We surrender!

Well I certainly didn't think it would end like this. Not so proud of the equipment loss but the kill ratio isn't too bad. We were moving into the city so he couldn't stay hidden too long. Email me and let me know how the other guy did.

We should do that other game soon.
