I have about 2 CV's , 4 CVE's, 3 BB's, 6-8 CA's and 6-8 CL's, 30 DD's, 20 SS, 6 LST's, 6 LCI's, 12 AK and 12 AP's sitting in PH and they won't release.

What are they waiting for? I have lost only 1 CVE (Long Island, it reacted, on no react and was killed), 6 CA'a, 15 DD's, 2 SS, Some AK's and AP'smainly SC and PT's. Is it that I have to many ships. It is now 4/25/43. Scn 19. I control, PM, OZ, N, Lugna, Manda, Vila, and most of NH, except Wetek (???). I think I've lost around 93 ships to the IJN 315 including Kaga, Hiyo, Shoho, Zuika, Kango, Heil, 6-8 CA's, 6-8 CL's, numerous DD's and lots of TK's, AP's, and 6-9 SS.

I'd really like to have those ships for a push at Rabal or Shortlands. Each has around 50,000 troops.

Without losing ships how and when can I get them to release?

RTFM! 18.1 Naval Reinforcements 2nd paragraph:
"Commitment of ships is limited by the High Command (the computer) based on the amount of shipping already in the South Pacific."
quote:

Without losing ships how and when can I get them to release?

You can't while running a game. Before starting a game you can adjust the reinforcements in the Realism Options Screen (section 2 in the manual).

You will get more released even if you don't get any sunk if your the allies. As the war goes on the Commitment level for the allies goes up and the IJN will go down, Every month (I believe) the amount of ship committment will go up for the allies and increase the likelyhood of more ships being released. For Japan though it keeps going down which is why many AAR's inculde stories of the IJN player going from March 1943 to December and only getting 3 subs 1 DD and a fews sacks of rice!

All you can do is to send some high value ships back to Pearl and hope for the best.
3000 Cap AP's you aren't using.
AO's that you really don't need.
CVE's if you can get by without them.
Any ships that AAA can upgrade. Especially the ones that still have .50 cal mgs on them.
Any wornout AK's that you can get by not having.

I did this in scenario 17 and got all 4 US CV's in the middle of June 1942. Boy, was that a surprise for my IJN opponent!

Halsey, that might be the ticket. Send ships that can can be upgraded or really not need.

Under Prob. of Release it shows LOW right now. I thought that it would go higher the deeper into 43 I went.

In my experience the Allied Chance of Release starts at High, and then drops from there. I've never played a game deep into '43 to find out if it starts going up again.

Sending cripples back fro repairs, ships back for upgrades, useless ships home for use elsewhere, and so on as suggested by Halsey, is probably your best bet.

I think that you are doing TOO well. You may consider that those ships are not just "sitting" in PH, but they are the forces that are launching "Galvanic" right now. Historically, it went off in November, as I recall, but with your success in the South Pacific, you are at about the same point that took til November to reach in RL.

Which brings to light one of the "shortcomings" in this sim, the fact that out of theatre requirements are not really addressed. As in the fact that there are many ships, troops and so forth that would be required to leave the South Pacific to participate in some of these operations during the time frame that the larger scenarios cover. Like during the Bougainville landings, I believe that Halsey only had the Saratoga and Independence to provide any CV cover to the forces committed there. He was forced to raid Rabaul with this force (plus 5th Air Force was doing LR attacks from NG and the Trobriands) to counter a buildup of IJN surface units there. He was successful in causing the Japanese to withdraw the cruisers back to Truk, as they were unaware of the paucity of USN forces in the area at the time.

Now in the War in the Pacific, you will be in charge of the whole enchilada, so if there are 2 operations that you need to run concurrently, you will have to make the force allocation decisions that Nimitz and Yamamoto had to make in RL, not some "commitment level"....

Right! I was suggesting a gamey move you can use against the computer rolls that it makes to release ships. A US CV is 300+ victory points, so I try to base my ship returns on the ship values based in Pearl. You also have to send back adequate escorts because the computer releases them in groups. The only thing that increases the actual number of ships in play is the commitment level that you start the game with.

The reason it shows low is because you are maxed out. It will go back to moderate if you send enough shipping back. When new reinforcements arrive it will move back to low, but the computer will only allow you a certain number of ships at that level. Is what you can hope for are combat vessels instead of auxilleries. If you recieve a ship you can do without, send it right back. I do that constantly as I play. Gee, I have 15 AO's, do I really need more?

In order to have new ships released, you have to have you "probability release" to go higher than low. Two solutions:

_ you can wait, as the level increases in 1943, but I'm not sure of that.

_ or you can send back ships:gasp.... admirals having a stroke, yes, I repeat send back ships, useless or outdated.
In my own opininon, the better way to play the game is to have always a moderate probability of release, except in important circonstances (the IJN for instance should get the maximum of ships in late 1942 and then wait for the battle). With this level, you will receive replacements. If you don't like them, send them back.
For example, you have probably 6 CV. With the LBA that you have now and base in Vila, Dobadura, Lae and so on, and a small CV force available to your opponent, not to speak of superioir planes, do you really need so much CV ?
Send back any ships able to have another AA upgrade, or an ASW upgrade. Any ship having Mk 6 or Mk 7 depth charges may increase to Mk 9 a,d Mk 7/ml respectively, including SCs, and become far more deadly for IJN subs.
As for the AA upgrades, transports also receives them: AA * 2 helps.
Sending back your older DD can help if they are replaced with newer ones, same for CL and slow BB.

On a side note, Wewak (in New Guinea) is a base worth 1150 points is you build it to max size and is usually not well defended. Momote (AF 6) and Los Negros (port 9) are also nice bases in this area.
Let Shortlands troops died of hunger and under bombardments. Land in Bougainville to encircle them. Rabaul is an easier target with the same number of troops. Take Buka and Gasmata and then land your troops on the hex next to Rabaul, before ordering them to march to the target.
Kavieng may also be a far easier target.

question! If I send back a CV having first re-assigned it`s aircraft will it be given more aircraft. And will it automatically be re-fitted and re-launched or instead replaced with another CV?

Returning CVs to PH --- If you remove the air groups from carrier ( all a/c wait for all to leave) you will not recieve anymore a/c. No new carrier air wing for that carrier.

The CV will be refitted without your input. Make sure there is no damaged weapons on any US ship or it will be permanantly disabled ( weapon listed in red)

You can send back a CV and keep the planes in noumea or elsewhere on the map buyt the carrier will return empty.

If any upgrade is available to her, she will return with the upgrades (especially in AA).

The game didn't take in account the fact that the carrier let his air group behind to decide if it will return or another will come.

In fact it is probable if you send back a CV that your probability of release will rise to moderate again and that available CV in PH sail before the sent back CV is available again. So you will probably receive a new CV wit ha new airgroup.

Your ships will come back without air groups. You will have to place the old air groups back on board or substitute other air groups.

Hello all,

There are three factors that I see that will affect ship releases

1. The scenario you are playing. If it is one of the historical scenarios you will not get as much as you would if you are playing scen 17 or 19. Scen 19 will send you the most ships.

2. Your beginning commitment level for the chosen scenario. The default is 100% for any scenario. You can modify this for up to %200 before starting play in the options menu.

3. The total number of ships you have in theater at any given time. If you suffer a lot of battle damage and send a lot of ships home, your commitment level will jump up. If the battlefield is quiet and your ship allotment is full, then you will not see more ships until you send some home.

There are other minor factors as well. For example the computer will not release capital ships unless there is a suitable number of escorts available as well.

That's pretty much what I did.

I sent back ships that I didn't need or use. Ones that needed refit etc.

I've even bypassed Shortland and have now landed at Buka. Established a foward base there. Using 2 CB's, and 2 Base Force (200 a/c), I've positioned 5 sqd's of Corsairs, and 5 Sqd's of SBD's there. The SBD's where moved from Munda, and replaced with 4 Sqds of B-25J med. bombers and 2 P-40 Sqd's. I have another 5 sqd's of B-25J's at Lugan along with 1 B-26B, which will move to Vilaand join 3 sqd's F4-F Wildcat Sqd's.

My goal is the take Wetek in late May43 early June 43 and maybe even Gasmata. What I need was transports. I've stated getting them and AK's and APD's again. Enough to move supply around and support combat landings.

I think right now when I last checked ships will rotate in for the next 37 days.

I even sent some of the old BB's back. I still have 4 BB's in theater.

Thanks for the posts.
