Hi.
I played the game for nearly one month now and i really like it. I read through this forum and get some good advices. But i have still two questions:

1. Is it possible to set my fighters to cap without doing anything else like escort or sweep missions???

2. I battle the AI at very hard. I play as the allies. now the date is 8/9/42. i think i do well and build port moresby to my major airfield with a huge amount off level bombers. the good think is they sink nearly every transport the AI sends in. The bad thing is that everytime the AI bombs my airfield my fighters ( ca 40) gets slaughtert by his zeros (90). its like a 1:10 shot out. What can i do?

Thanks for all incomming repley

Ps Sorry for my bad english

You're - I mean Your - English is good enough for this place .

Concerning #1, unfortunately it is not possible to set fighters to fly only CAP unless you abstain from flying bomber missions - in that case your fighters have nothing to escort and will fly only CAP. Doesn't make much sense, therefore a 'CAP only' mission for fighters and fighter-bombers has been asked for on this forum several times. Let'S hope for the final patch/add-on...

To answer your second question, playing on 'Very Hard' doesn't mean the AI behaves any smarter than at 'Historical' level, it only means that the AI is cheating with the combat results - the AI gets some kind of bonus so (in your case) the Zeros are even deadlier than at the 'Historic' level. I made this 'mistake' myself, thinking that the AI will somehow conduct 'better' operations when at 'Very Hard'. No, if you want a real challenge without artificially skewed combat results, try PBEM. Human players tend to have far superior strategic planning than the AI will ever manage.

Hope this helps.

1. Yes, you have two options:
_ use escort orders and have no bombers based in your base
_ or use LRCAP and point on the base hex. Rotate your fighters units, one day flying, one day on the ground.

2. Well, that is what always happens with the very hard IJN AI in summer-fall 1942. My tactic is simple: I don't defend Port Moresby skies. Betties and Nells won't do much damage anyway and operationnal losses with hit both Japanese bombers and fighters. Send more AA to the base. All my fighters in PM are with escort orders, CAP 0 %. And any Japanese convoy coming by is severely hit. PM is supplied by FT TF, C-47 (troops) and an occasionnal huge convoy covered by the whole USN TF including CV.
On the other hand, in my IJN PBEMs (so no AI "cheating" advantage), the Corsair has a 12:1 kill ratio in his favor in 1943 against Zeroes...

Right, forgot about the LRCAP thing. Concerning the bombers, fighters can provide escort service for bombers from other bases, so simply having no bombers at the fighter base might not result in the desired effect.

It seems to me that fighters may escort bombers flying from another base if the fighters have the same target choosen. Fighters with escort orders and no target will escort bombers flying from their base only, on any target they may reach.

Fighters with the 'Escort' order are not given a target, they are simply given the 'Escort' mission and you can give them a CAP level. As said in the manual, they'll escort a nearby bomber mission if they are close to the flightpath.

I'm sorry but when you give orders 'Escort' to a fighter unit, you can choose a target hex. That means that the unit will escort raids to this spot and not to anywhere else.

At least this is how I understand it and it worked like that when I used it.
