U.S. Army
4 years, 1 month and 19 days.
Served with:
C Troop, 3rd Squadron/3rd ACR (87-88)
C Company 4th Battalion/34th Armored Brigade/8th Infantry Div

as a M1A1 Tank Driver

Fought in Desert Storm (our brigade was assigned to the 3rd Armored Division)

Our tank knocked out 19 emeny vehicles in one firefight (I can't remeber if it was 7 T-62 or 9 and the rest was a bunch of BMP's).

Most remebered:
Sgt "Something" said after a firefight

"There was a Sabo in the main gun and a bunch of Iraqi's in a truck. I fired the Sabo into the engine of the truck and blew the engine out the other side killed the crew. A bunch of Iraqi grunts jumped out and I flipped the switch to MG and shot them to pieces a few ran into this bunker, that that point the loader had a HEAT round in the tube. On the Way! Boom. Dusted them bastards. Ha Ha Ha"

This may sound sick to those who never been in a war, but its either you or them.

I pray to God that my kids don't have to see what I saw, and it was only a 4 day war. I could not even imagine the Hell that those heroric boys of the 2nd Marine Div went through on the 20th of Nov 1943 at Tarawa or the boys that landed at Normandy.

For you Cav Scouts, Scouts out! When your burning and smoking that when us tankers know where the enemy is.

Cav may know this:

LLMF

To the boys out there now. Good Luck and God's speed.

I served four years enlisted active-duty as an electronic warfare technician with the 511th MI Co / 11th ACR in Fulda, Germany, with a small detour to the Persian Gulf at the end of the war. Blackhorse! Then reserves in college doing the same job for the 99th ARCOM, after which I went to USUHS (if you know what that is, I'll buy the beer...), and now I'm active duty again as a surgery resident.

Tykkimies, Jääkäri, Pioneeri or whatever:rolleyes: = Private
"Alikersantti" or "Kersantti" = Sergeant
"Vänrikki" = 2nd Lieutenant

And welcome to the forum Kaiutin! ;)

Well, I guess I'm going to be the first one to say that I haven't done any military service and I won't do any. However, that doesn't stop me from finding the game fascinating and great fun! :-) Not surprisingly, I have found the learning curve to be very steep as I have no basic knowledge of anything military. Just... gotta... try... harder...

I have to correct those ranks a bit...

Sotamies = Private
Korpraali = Private 1st. class / Lance Corporal
Alikersantti = Corporal
Kersantti = Sergeant

I served in Finnish Rapid Deployment Force, a PfP (Partnership for Peace) organization of the Finnish Army, and we used NATO-standards in everything so I should know.

I did my military service in the german Bundeswehr as gunner on an M-109 self propelled howitzer. It was back in 1989 and the duration for the service was 15 months. For those interested I was in the 3./PzArtBtl 285 in Münsingen, Germany.

That's my Avatar: it shows me (yes, I'm there :)) in front of the M-109.

Well I entered service in January 1989 and IIRC the recruits which entered January 1990 had only to do 12 months.
But honestly I don't think it was too bad. I learned a lot about social behavior and comradship.:)

Well, I made my experiences in 1986/87 and during one reserve exercise in 1989.
If the battery commander of a M109-battery doesn't know that there is 155mm ammo that can be laser-guided (of corse not in the german inventory), if a battalion commander isn't able to tell that approx. 50% (Numbers of the mid-80s) of the Bundeswehr consists of conscripts (that question was asked by a civilian on an open day), then the rememberances aren't too well.

I remember one 1st Lt. telling me that he belived that the Federal republic of Germany is a country woth to be defended when he entered the Bundeswehr.
He would still have this cconviction, however after several years in the Bundeswehr he doubted that the Bundeswehr is the kind of organization that could be used for this task.

I never knew there were so many Finns into wargaming!
